Overall Rating
As part of their yearly update, a new N Line Night Edition debuts this year. The 2022 Hyundai Sonata has a starting price of $24,350. Under the hood, you get a 191-hp 2.5L powertrain as standard while the 180-hp turbo-4 unit is reserved for the SEL Plus and Limited trim. If a fuel economy like 52 MPG sounds about right, then it's the Sonata Hybrid you could be looking for.
The midsize sedan segment is very competitive and Hyundai's answer to it is their bold-looking Sonata. As part of their yearly update, a new N Line Night Edition debuts this year. The rest of the specs and features remain unchanged this year. The 2022 Sonata has a starting price of $24,350. Hyundai has made full efforts to make the Sonata looks stylish and be chock full of features. However, in the current trim levels, the one that ticks all the boxes is the SEL Plus trim. This trim packs many of the finer features and creature comforts of the moniker, and yet does not cost as much as the top-of-the-line Limited trim. Also, it packs a punchy turbocharged unit that is fun to drive.

The ride is a little more unsettled than we'd like and firmer than most cars in this category- CarAndDriver
Like its predecessor, the 2022 Hyundai Sonata offers a choice of two powertrains. Under the hood of the SE and SEL, you get a 2.5L inline-4 engine that is refined enough to produce 191 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. Upgrade to the SEL Plus or Limited, and this is swapped out with a 1.6L turbocharged inline-4 engine that churns out 180 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. All this power is put on the front wheels by an 8-speed automatic transmission unit.
The Sonata is really a fun-to-drive car. On the city roads, you will be impressed with its smooth ride quality thanks to the rear multi-link suspension setup. It certainly feels planted and firmer on the road. Although being an FWD vehicle, there is no torque steer in the Sonata, which is really amazing, It copes with the power really well. Talking about steering, it is precise with really good feedback. Overall, the Sonata makes for a good family car.
When the push comes to shove, the Sonata can go from 0-60 mph in 7.7 seconds while the quarter-mile comes up in 15.8 seconds. Upgrade to the 1.6L turbo unit, and you will shave off about 0.3 seconds in the 0-60 time and about 0.5 seconds in the quarter-mile sprint. The Sonata also shines with its braking performance. The pedal feels firm while the brakes are sturdy and responsive. The 60-0 MPH braking distance is recorded in 121 feet.

In this lineup, the Toyota Camry comes out as the most powerful ride with the highest price. The Honda Accord beats its rivals to secure the top place in terms of acceleration Corporate sibling Kia K5 comes with the 180 hp turbo unit as standard and hence is the least powerful. On the performance front, it is similar to the Sonata.
The Sonata’s best fuel economy ratings come in hybrid form- The Car Connection
The base 2.5L I-4 unit in the Hyundai Sonata is rated at 28 MPG in the city, 38 MPG on the highway, and 32 MPG combined. Upgrade to the 1.6L turbocharged unit and the gas mileage drops by 1 MPG. The Sonata N Line has the worst fuel economy with 23 MPG in the city, 33 MPG on the highway, and 27 MPG combined.
In the base SE, you get a 14.8-gallon fuel tank capacity which is upgraded to 15.9-gallon from the SEL trim onwards. It delivers anywhere between 474 and 493 miles. However, if you want the ultimate in fuel frugality, then the best choice would be to pick up the Sonata Hybrid as it can offer 52 MPG combined.

Among the rivals, the Honda Accord scores the top marks with the best fuel efficiency. The corporate cousin, Kia K5 procures second place with a slightly better city economy than the other competitors. The Toyota Camry offers the best fuel tank capacity right off the bat, and also the best highway mileage which is why it ties in second place.
The size of the interior is excellent, matching interiors of larger vehicles in the segment- Edmunds
The interior of the 2022 Hyundai Sonata does not see any changes from 2021. Hyundai interiors have taken a big step up in the last couple of years and the Sonata is yet another cracker. It has a clean yet striking dual-tone dashboard layout. All the main touchpoints are covered with soft-touch surfaces. The leather steering wheel feels grippy to hold and it also comes with heated functionality.
The seat upholstery ranges from cloth to leather and the seats are really comfortable and supportive. Similarly, the amount of tech and creature comfort you get depends highly on the trim level. In terms of seating space, there is ample room for 5 people in both rows. Thanks to the bigger dimensions, the Sonata can seat tall guys quite easily. Even in the back, the cabin remains quite comfortable.

Being a daily driver and a family car, you get 16 cu-ft of cargo space. This is enough to carry along 2 months of household supplies without any hassles. To keep you entertained, Hyundai has retrofitted an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard in all trims except the Limited. In the flagship Limited trim, you get a 10.25-inch touchscreen with a 12-speaker Bose surround system as standard.
All of the trims get Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth as standard connectivity systems. The UI is intuitive and a breeze to get used to. The screen is placed at the perfect spot so that you don't have to move around a lot and concentrate on driving fully. Hyundai has kept the usage of buttons to a bare minimum, and all of them are concentrated mostly on the steering wheel and center console. Some other cabin features are:
Its dramatic styling includes exaggerated proportions, a prominent grille, and a quirky design cue- CarAndDriver
Post its generational change in 2020, the 2022 Hyundai Sonata is not bringing any changes to the exterior design. Just like Audis, the Sonata comes with a prominent grille that looks aggressive and yet goes with the overall theme of the car. You get LED headlamps as standard fitment along with a LED DRL stript that extends on the hood. The front lip adds that extra edginess to make the family car feel more sporty than it is.
On the side, you get the sportback-ish bodyline that merges onto the trunk while the 18-inch alloy wheels spice up the silhouette. This bigger wheel size also makes it ride higher at 5.3 inches. At the back, you get one continuous strip of LED taillight going from one end to the other which might remind you of the rear of a Volvo S90. Upgrade to the Sonata N Line, and you get unique 19-inch alloy wheels, quad exhausts, and special N Line elements.

Amongst the competitors, the Toyota Camry is the heaviest sedan off the lot and also one of the longest. The Sonata rides closest to the tarmac compared to the others. Its cousin, the Kia K5, has the longest wheelbase and is also the longest ride of the lot. Though it may not look like it, the Honda Accord is one of the lightest cars in the segment and also the tallest which aids its interior space as well. Some other exterior features are:
Hyundai's Highway Driving Assist system, which bundles together a lot of safety tech- MotorTrend
In the crash tests from the NHTSA, the 2022 Hyundai Sonata procured a perfect 5-star safety rating. It also scored an overall 'Good' rating along with the Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. It also earned the highest 'Superior' rating for the front crash prevention. All these ratings prove the fact that the Sonata is a safe vehicle.
As made famous by Chris Evans and John Krasinski as the "Smaht Pack", the Sonata comes with the Hyundai SmartSense safety suite as standard. This includes active driver aids, passive driver safety features, and passenger safety features that make the sedan a safe proposition. Some of the notable safety features are:
The Kia K5 is the corporate cousin to the Sonata. Born out of the same blood, the K5 looks more aggressive and stylish, offers a more upscale interior, and marginally better MPG figures at a lower price tag. The most notable difference between the two cars is the availability of an AWD system in the K5. That being said, it all boils down to brand preference here as both the sedans are essentially the same car underneath.
The Honda Accord continues on its streak of being the top-rated family car in the segment. Backed with a spacious interior, a large cargo compartment, spectacular MPG figures, loads of features, and a lucrative price tag, the Accord certainly ticks all the right boxes for any buyer. Furthermore, it comes with the telltale Honda reliability and the lively driving experience that the brand is known for. So, there is hardly any reason to pick the Sonata over the Accord.
The Toyota Camry is the reliable king of the segment. Boasting a spacious interior, a powerful and refined engine, and segment-leading MPG figures, it is also quite cost-effective to own in the long term. The only downside is the smaller cargo capacity and the higher price tag it has compared to the Sonata. Looks-wise, the Sonata steals the show. That being said, the Toyota Camry is still the better proposition among the two.
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata does not try to bring any changes to the winning cues of the redesign and the addition of the performance-centric N-Line in 2021. Packed with features from top to bottom, it offers tons of practicality as a family car in all the trims. So, unless you want only the tag of being a 2022 car, we would recommend picking up a 2021 Hyundai Sonata as you can probably get some sweet deals from CarIndigo.
