Overall Rating
The subcompact SUV segment isn’t necessarily known for its exciting powertrains or enthralling designs, rather it’s revered for its utility, practicality, and affordability.
The well-equipped 2022 Hyundai Venue is back this year with next to no changes. Introduced as recently as in 2020, the Venue marks Hyundai’s first foray into the segment. Starting at an MSRP of $18,900, the 2022 Venue will get a Power Sunroof as an optional extra, whereas the Limited trim also gets two new colors namely Galactic Grey, and Ceramic White. Engine duties are handled by a 1.6L Inline-4 setup that belts out a minimal 121 hp.
The subcompact SUV segment isn’t necessarily known for its exciting powertrains or enthralling designs, rather it’s revered for its utility, practicality, and affordability. The 2022 Hyundai Venue is a personification of the segment that sticks with the basic ideas but extends its likability with a tantalizing design that looks futuristic and has fun-to-drive dynamics. It reeks of modernity and is developed to be a worthy contender to the likes of the Honda HR-V, Ford EcoSport, and Chevrolet Trailblazer.
Amongst the available options, the new Limited trim makes for a viable purchase. At $22,150, the Limited trim adds top-notch and opulent features and is only diminutively higher-priced than the base SE or mid-level SEL trims. It provides ample value for the money spent and at a rather affordable price tag, we recommend adding the Cargo Package for improving the utility of the subcompact SUV.

At a starting price of $18,900, the new 2022 Hyundai Venue continues to be made available in three trim levels only that share a standard 1.6L Inline-4 powertrain setup. However, the top-tier Denim trim has been renamed and is now known as the Limited trim. While the SEL trim is priced at $20,650, the top-tier Limited trim comes in at $22,150.

For 2022, there has also been a minor reshuffling of the existing feature list. These include the addition of an engine immobilizer across the lineup and the introduction of a sunroof in the mid-level SEL trim. What remains unchanged though is the standalone Cargo Package option, which costs an additional $200 over the base price.

While it's not available with all-wheel-drive, and its engine labors on the highway, it's perfectly suited for the speed limits and tight spaces that define urban areas - Car and Driver
Carrying forward unchanged from the outgoing iteration, the 2022 Hyundai Venue continues to make use of a standard 1.6L naturally-aspirated inline-4 unit that is good for 121 hp and 113 lb.-ft of torque. Though not the most powerful, the engine of this subcompact SUV is built to deliver a refined ride quality and is well complemented by the easy-going CVT unit that is placed on board. While there is only a single drivetrain configuration available, the FWD setup of the Venue comes in handy for a vehicle specifically built for urban conditions.
The 2022 Hyundai Venue can sprint from 0-60 mph in 9.8 seconds, with the quarter-mile run is slated for completion in 16.8 seconds. It records a top speed of 130 MPH and though the acceleration timings may not seem impressive, the Venue manages to perform better than most of its rivals. Its power delivery is linear and feels adequate when traveling within city limits. However, on the highway, the performance of the SUV seems rather underwhelming and you would have to push the pedal consistently to take over other vehicles, when on the move. But considering the price range and the purpose that Hyundai tries to solve, the acceleration capabilities feel veracious and to the point.

When compared to the Hyundai Venue, the Honda HR-V and Chevrolet Trailblazer are considerably powerful. While the Honda has the highest power output of 141 hp, Chevrolet’s turbocharged four-cylinder option is the torquiest at 162 lb.-ft. However, their higher outputs do not translate into best-in-class performance. Though the Trailblazer comes close to the Hyundai in the 60mph run taking 9.4 seconds, the HR-V is an entire second slower.
As a practical daily driver built for short commutes and grocery runs, the 2022 Hyundai Venue is an efficient offering that would not cost you a fortune on fuel expenses. As per estimates, the subcompact SUV from the house of Hyundai is rated at 29 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway, which translates into a combined mileage of 31 MPG. While efficiency is potent for its class, the Venue feels limited by its less voluminous tank that can hold just about 11.9-gallons, which further causes a bearing on the range that it manages.

The Honda HR-V and Chevrolet Trailblazer are closely matched to the Hyundai Venue when it comes to efficiency averaging a combined mileage of 30 MPG, while the Ford EcoSport falls behind in this aspect averaging 28 MPG only. However, with larger tanks at their disposal, all three subcompact SUVs promise to be better performers. Surprisingly, it is the 2021 EcoSport that gets the largest fuel tank of 13.8-gallons and manages a better range than most of its rivals, coming in at second place just behind the HR-V that can record a combined range of 405 miles.
Despite the plastics, we were also pleasantly surprised by the upmarket interior design and large standard infotainment screen - Motortrend
The 2022 Hyundai Venue continues to vaunt an ergonomic cabin design that reeks of minimalism. Despite starting under the $20,000 mark, the quality of materials used is appreciable. Though there is an abundant use of hard plastic on the dashboard and central console, the soft-touch materials available on the door handles and seats, negate the plasticky effect, making the interiors visually appealing. You get a protruding central touchscreen that serves as the infotainment unit, while a digital screen strip that sits just below conveys the climate and aircon settings.
The seats of the 2022 Hyundai Venue are adequately comfortable. Though it might look compact on the outside, the interiors are commodious and can accommodate five passengers easily. There is a good amount of bolstering and cushioning on the seats and even under-thigh support feels ample for mid-sized passengers. As standard, the seats are covered in cloth upholstery, while with the top-tier Limited trim, buyers can also opt for Premium synthetic upholstery to add to the opulent aura on the inside. There are several cubby storage spaces inside the cabin, however, at 18.7 cubic feet, the Venue’s trunk is the smallest in the segment.

As for the infotainment system, Hyundai equips the Venue with an intuitive and user-friendly touchscreen unit that is utterly responsive. It gets Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity as standard, and a 4-speaker system handles the sound duties. With the top-level trim, additionally, you also get a navigation system and satellite radio connectivity for an enriching experience.
Some salient interior features include:
The 2022 Hyundai Venue looks appetizing. At the front, the headlamps and fog lights are integrated into a single boxy unit that sits at a lower height than usual. The daytime running lights sit atop of the headlamps and are a sleek unit that shares similar designing cues as the Hyundai Santa Fe. At the rear as well, the Venue has a set of boxy taillights. Despite falling into a segment of subcompact SUVs, Hyundai ensures that the Venue carries a similar design strategy as the higher-placed options and remains immensely bulky.
The 2022 Hyundai Venue is the lightest SUV in its class and weighs just over 2,600 lbs. It is also relatively smaller than all of its competitors. It gets a wheelbase of 99.2 inches and is the shortest in overall length as well. Even its ground clearance is shorter than its rivals at 6.7 inches, but the smaller dimensions of the Venue, do help it easily maneuver in tight parking spots and city limits.

Against the Venue, the Chevrolet Trailblazer is the only other SUV that looks distinct and appeals to a younger class of buyers. On the other hand, the Honda HR-V and Ford EcoSport are rather subtle in their design and look like family-oriented vehicles. But with Honda’s design change slated with the 2023 model, we expect the HR-V to be the game-changer in the segment.
Some of the salient exterior features include:
The 2021 Hyundai Venue scores impressively in the crash tests conducted by both the NHTSA and IIHS. It receives an overall 4-star rating from the former, while the latter gives the highest possible rating of ‘Good’ in most of the tests conducted. The Venue is based on the Hyundai-Kia K2 platform and is one of the most rigid platforms from the brand, the subcompact SUV feels immensely sturdy and scores high on reliability. It comes with a slew of standard specifications which include electronic stability control, tire pressure monitoring system, and an engine immobilizer that has been added as a basic offering from 2022 MY only.
Other salient safety specifications include:
The Honda HR-V and Hyundai Venue are rather unevenly matched when pitted directly against one another. While the Hyundai is modern and contemporary in its build, Honda’s subcompact SUV has continued without a change for quite some time now and feels a bit outdated.
Additionally, it is the slower option and feels sluggish. It also gets a lackluster cabin and while the feature load and efficiency are somewhat similar, the Venue’s lower starting price but higher value for money, make it an impressive choice in the market.
Perhaps, the Hyundai Venue and Chevrolet Trailblazer clearly define how subcompact SUVs should look in this age and time. Both these options have tantalizing designs to their names and feel adequately packed with features, considering the price they are made available at. Even their cabin designs seem to have a similar philosophy and reek of simplicity when first viewed.
The only point of difference between these two SUVs then lies in their mechanical settings. While the Hyundai is the quicker option and has better acceleration capabilities, the Trailblazer, though slower, upholds efficiency. But with minute differences, it is tough to declare a certain winner between the two.
Being a Hyundai offering, the Venue reeks of reliability. Its performance feels fitting for a vehicle that sits just under $20,000, making it a great pick amongst the plethora of options available in the price range. The Hyundai Venue is finely built and neatly crafted. It gets a sumptuous design to its name and is packed to the hilt with class-leading specifications and also gets the best tech features on board. Though not the most powerful, its powertrain unit is best suited for urban conditions and even its fuel efficiency feels competitive in its segment. So, if you are in the market for a subcompact SUV, there is no better option than the 2022 Hyundai Venue and we find no reason to veto it.
