Overall Rating
The Infiniti Q50 has been around for quite some time now and 6 years down the line since it last received its major redesign, the 2022 Infiniti Q50 is not significantly different from last year’s model. But having said that, it still manages to turn heads with its sleek and luxurious design. The 2022 Infiniti Q50 is expected to starts at $36,600 (MSRP) and can go up to $57,500.
Six years, the Infiniti Q50 has continued on without any changes to its equipment that makes it feel slightly outdated and old in 2022. For the 2022 model year, however, the Infiniti Q50 receives a few changes since its last redesign in 2016. The trim levels have now been simplified to feature only three model levels, and the base Pure trim has been dropped. Also, the specs sheet across all trims now includes wireless Apple CarPlay as standard, whereas the Luxe trim gains more standard equipment over last year. All these changes on the Q50 have translated to a higher base price over the 2021 model, and the 2022 Infiniti Q50 now starts at a price of $42,100.
All Q50 models still feature the same twin-turbo 300 horsepower 3.0L V6 engine paired to a 7-speed transmission with either RWD or AWD. The 2022 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400, the performance version of the Q50 also carries over unchanged with its 400 hp twin-turbo 3.0L V6 and now costs $55,950. One of the Q50's strong points is its comfortable interior, which still somewhat carries the "Infiniti" luxury flair, despite the aging design and layout. The 2022 Infiniti Q50 luxury sedan will be available for sale in the fall of 2021 and faces competition from some seriously upgraded cars such as the BMW 3-Series, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Audi A4.
The 2022 Infiniti Q50 Luxe trim is the one we recommend, with RWD. For a price of $42,100 the Luxe model's feature and equipment list is very well rounded off with most of the desired creature comforts and luxury features. The Luxe trim comes standard with a remote start, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, a 16-speaker Bose audio system, two infotainment screens, and an array of advanced safety features making it a safe luxury car to travel in.

The 2022 Infiniti Q50 is now offered in only three trim levels: the Luxe, Sensory, and the Red Sport 400 which will be covered separately in another article. Pricing for the trims starts at $42,100 for the Luxe RWD model, whereas the Sensory RWD costs $47,800 and the Red Sport RWD starts at $55,950. The car's base price has now gone up by $5,500 over the 2021 model, but gets more standard equipment and features. A destination charge of $1,025 is additional.
All trims now get wireless Apple CarPlay as standard now, and other standard features include power-folding mirrors, sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, heated steering wheel, power tilt-and-telescopic steering column, and a 16-speaker Bose audio system. The Sensory trim has absorbed features from the Signature trim, and other additions include an open-pore-wood interior trim and saddle brown leather-upholstery as an optional extra.

The 2022 Infiniti Q50 Luxe trim is the one we recommend, with RWD. "Even though the Q50 has been around since 2014, the basic thrill of driving a punchy,rear-drive car never ges old." - KBB
The 2022 Infiniti Q50 carries on with the same twin-turbo 3.0L V6 engine seen on the 2021 model, which puts out 300 hp and a peak torque delivery of 295 lb-ft. The Red Sport 400 trim outputs more power of 400 bhp and a peak of 350 lb-ft. Despite the power output, all trims are coupled with a 7-speed automatic torque converter transmission and comes with either RWD configuration or AWD configuration. Choosing the AWD configuration costs $2,000 extra over the RWD model.
The Infiniti Q50's driving performance as an RWD car is engaging, and the Red Sport 400 just makes it better with more accessible power. The Q50's engine is usually calm, but it can get vocal at higher RPMs. The power delivery is linear, and the gearshifts are extremely smooth and precise. However, cabin noise levels are high at highway speeds due to the run-flat tires, and this does dent the overall driving experience on this sedan.
In terms of handling and steering, the Q50 can do better with more controlled and well-executed suspension duties. The independent double-wishbone and multi-link coil spring setup at the front and the rear does a good job in controlling body roll around corners but is more on the stiffer side. The steering is light and easy to turn, but it lacks feedback limiting the experience. Despite all this, the Infiniti Q50 still manages to record a quick 0-60 MPH time of 4.85 seconds.

The Q50 has the largest engine on offer, and it makes the most power and torque as well. The BMW's 2.0L also outputs the same torque at a slightly lower rpm. The Merc is the most expensive car in this comparison. In terms of performance, the Q50 is around 0.4 seconds faster than the rest, has a quicker quarter-mile time as well. However, the ride quality offered on the German cars is miles ahead, with their quiet cabin and composed suspension making it a better choice for longer journeys.
"All that power means hefty fuel consumption." -The Car Connection
The 2022 Infiniti Q50 returns a mediocre mileage rating at 20 MPG city, 29 MPG highway, and 23 MPG combined. With all-wheel drive, this mileage drops down to 19 MPG in the city, 27 MPG on the highway, and 22 MPG combined. The Red Sport 400 returns even lower numbers at 20 MPG city/ 26 MPG highway/ 22 MPG combined. With a fuel capacity of 20 gallons, the Q50 has a combined range of 460 miles.

Compared to the competition, the Q50's mileage is poor. The C-Class and the 3-Series return class-leading mileage figures of 30 MPG combined whereas the A4 returns slightly less at 28 MPG combined. In terms of fuel capacity, the Q50 has the largest tank which does help it offer decent range numbers overall. The A4 gets the smallest tank at 15.3 gallons. The Merc's 17.4-gallon tank with its 30 MPG mileage estimates a combined range of 522 miles, the most in the competition.
"A dated interior design greets everyone who climbs into a 2022 Q50." - KBB
The 2022 Infiniti Q50 interior used to be luxurious once upon a time, but now it comes close to most of the standard sedans in this class. The car shows its old age clearly in the interior, in terms of the entire arrangement and overall layout. However, the curves coupled with the sharp elements on the inside do still look graceful. The quality is still excellent, with high fit and finish levels that make the interior very appealing. The controls aren't the most practically arranged ones in this lot, and take a while to get used to.
The Q50's seats are still superbly comfortable and are covered in leather upholstery with good levels of cushioning and support. Getting in and out of the Q50 is not an issue in the front, but the curved roof forces taller passengers to bend while getting in the rear. The overall visibility is average. What troubles the interior experience is the ride quality, which is noisy and unsettling. Creature comforts such as the heated front seats with memory function, dual-zone climate control, and ambient lighting do help.

The Q50 is about the same size as its competitors, but its cargo capacity is below average and the interior is short on useful cubbies. It may be a comfortable highway cruiser, but the Q50 falls short for long family trips. With about 13 cubic feet of trunk volume, the Q50 falls far short of the 3-series sedan and the Mercedes-Benz C-class. A folding rear seat is only optional, not standard. For the best interior experience in terms of comfort and space, the C-Class is the car to go for.
The Q50 gets a dual infotainment screen setup, which does look good but is not the easiest to use. Both the screens do not go in sync with one another, with different menu layouts and buggy usability. The controls are specific to one of the screens, and it takes a while to get used to it. However, touch input responses are quick, and the navigation system is smooth. The 16-speaker Bose audio system works well. Few notable features of the cabin are:
"Last updated for 2016, the Infiniti Q50's exterior is managing to remain arguably agreeable." -KBB
Despite its age, the 2022 Infiniti Q50's looks still manage to stand out among the crowd. The Q50 draws on the design of the G35 and G37 sedans. Among the more modern and sharp design language of most new-generation sedans, the Q50's curvy profile matched with a few sharp lines does look appealing and graceful. A long hood stubby trunk profile on the Q50 keeps it mostly in line with today's luxury sedans, with a slightly sporty look.
The front of the car with the chrome and gloss black grille gives the vehicle an aggressive and sinister look. Aided with the muscular bumper, the Infiniti Q50 does make a strong point likewise. Along the side, the wheels and the doors are nicely matched in terms of proportionality, and the coupe-like roofline blends in well at the rear. The rear prominently draws on the design lines of the G35 sedan.

Dimensionally, the Q50 is the heaviest among the four cars, with the most length and height at 189.6 inches and 56.8 inches respectively; and shares its wheelbase with the BMW at 112.2 inches. The A4 is 0.7 inches wider than the Q50 but has the tightest wheelbase at 111 inches. The newly redesigned C-Class boasts the most wheelbase among the four at 112.7 inches, which is 0.5 inches more than the Q50.
The Sensory trim and the Red Sport trim differ from the Luxe trim slightly in the exterior design. The front and rear fascias on these two models have a different styling, and the positioning of the air intake is different as well: they sit lower and are wider as well. These trims also come with 19-inch alloy wheels. The car is available in a total of eight color options to choose from. The Grand Blue Pearl color and the Dynamic Sunstone red color are charged extra. A few of the notable exterior features of the Infiniti Q50 are:
The 2022 Infiniti Q50 has not been safety-rated by the NHTSA or the IIHS yet. However, NHTSA has given the car 5-stars in its rollover rating. The Q50 is based on the Nissan FM platform, and gets a solid body shell due to the abundant usage of High Strength Steel(HST) and exclusively designed crumple zones. The car gets plenty of active and passive safety features at its disposal. A few of its features are mentioned below:
The 2022 BMW 3-Series sedan is a better sedan than the Q50 in most ways. The Q50's potent engine, standard feature list, and comfortable seats are appealing, but the BMW is better at that. Two engine options, precise and sharp handling, excellent fuel economy, a composed ride, large trunk, and more comfortable interiors are some of the plus points on the 3-series. There's also a plug-in hybrid variant for a better economy and cleaner emissions.
With a complete redesign for 2022, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class redefines sedan luxury in its new avatar. The C-class's interior is probably the best in this class, and it will remind one of the more luxurious and expensive Merc cars. Sharp and sure-footed handling, high fuel economy, and a creature-comfort rich interior make the C-Class a better car than the Q50. The Q50 offers a scaled-down version of everything the C-Class does, just 10 years older with a poor economy.
The 2022 Infiniti Q50 is surely old in this 2016 exterior avatar. At $42,100, Its got a powerful engine, limited enjoyment from its driving dynamics, comfortable and feature-rich interiors, and a long list of necessary safety features. However, lifeless steering, bad fuel economy, complicated infotainment system, and a very outdated approach are major negatives for the Q50. This luxury sedan is a confusing story to entertain in 2022, as its rivals offer more tech and better interiors for the same money.
