2022 Kia K5 Review

The 2022 K5 Sedan comes at a starting price of $24,685 and just new standard features along with the new Kia logo. It is available in 4 configurations - LX, LXS, GT-Line, and EX trims and is available for sale across the country. The K5 GT gets a more powerful engine while the base K5 is powered by a 1.6L 180 hp turbo-4 engine capable of doing 0-60 mph in 7.8 seconds.

After a full redesign, Kia has some small updates that continue to make the K5 an even stronger product. To begin with, starting with the LXS trim you now get a pair of rear USB charging ports while the GT-Line offers a base AWD trim and also features a wireless charger. Probably the biggest change would be the inclusion of a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment unit on GT-Line and above trims as standard. The top-of-the-line EX trim now gets a 360-degree view camera system along with front parking sensors.

Prices for the 2022 K5 begin from $23,790. Other than the now available wireless charger and the larger infotainment unit over the standard 8-inch screen, there are no changes made to the interiors. its interiors remain spacious and practical and at the same time technology-filled. On the performance front, a 180-hp 1.6L turbo-4 engine powers the K5 that offers decent MPG figures. It competes against the heavyweights of the segment like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Nissan Altima

Buying Advice

The GT-Line trim is the one to go for in the FWD guise. It not only offers immense value with the long list of safety features and creature comforts it has to offer but also adds the sharper exterior styling with the GT-Line body kit. Note that wireless smartphone integration is not available in this trim. If that is an important feature on your shopping list, go for the LXS trim.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

The K5 nudges the performance needle just a little bit in the right direction- The Car Connection

The 2022 Kia K5 is powered by a 1.6L turbocharged inline-4 engine that makes 180 hp and 195 lb-ft. of torque. It is paired with an 8-speed torque converter which too feels a lot more engaging than the CVT. Though it may not be a powerhouse performer, it has enough grunt to match up with its rivals with its low-end torque that boosts its drivability. FWD is standard while AWD is available on LXS and GT-Line trim only.

The K5 doesn't have the sporty driving character of the Accord but it is getting close. There's a bit of understeer at a limit but only if you really chuck the K5 hard into a turn. Handling is still pretty good but it's just not quite to the expectation from a car that says GT. On the other hand, the steering has a nice road feel. The suspension is more of a softer tune for better ride quality and that is its USP.

In terms of performance, the K5 achieves 60 MPH on the speedo in 7.8 seconds, which is average for the class. It keeps its pace to complete the quarter-mile mark in 16 seconds. If you crave more performance, the GT model can do the same test in an astounding 5.4 seconds only. The braking performance of the K5 is quite good. It takes 124 feet to stop from 60 MPH thanks to its responsive brakes and minimal pedal travel.

The Toyota Camry is the most powerful of the lot. However, the Honda Accord bags the title of the quickest car in this competition. The Nissan Altima is the slowest among the bunch due to slow shifts from the CVT. It's worth noting that the K5 GT is much more powerful than the Accord Sport and quicker than the Camry TRD.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

Despite the turbos, the K5 gets the good gas mileage- The Car Connection

The fuel efficiency of the 2022 Kia K5 is on par with the segment standards. It is rated for 29 MPG in the city, 38 MPG on the highways and 32 MPG combined as per the EPA. Opting for the AWD variant brings down 4 MPG both in the city and highway. This is a considerable drop in the fuel economy figures as compared to its competitors.

Almost every model comes with a 14.8-gallon fuel tank which offers a decent range of 474 miles in mixed proportions. The AWD K5 gets a larger 15.8-gallon fuel tank which compensates for the drop in frugality. It can deliver up to 442 miles in combined conditions. Overall, the K5 is not a thirsty car and is a good option for fuel-conscious buyers.

The Nissan Altima returns almost identical fuel economy figures as that of the K5 but employs a larger tank which aids in offering a much longer range. The Toyota Camry is next in line in terms of the driving range offered while the Honda Accord is the most frugal one here. The K5 has the shortest range amongst its peers.

Interior
8.0/10

Inside, the K5 looks amazing for how much it costs- CarAndDriver

The Kia K5 has one of the best interiors in the class. The designs are reminiscent of European cars and although the build and material quality aren't on par with Audi or Mercedes, it does well in matching or even surpassing its rivals in this regard. There are some clever sporty touches too. The center stack is canted towards the driver and it angles the opposite way toward the passenger. The flat-bottom steering wheel on the GT-Line looks stylish.

Both cloth and leatherette seats are available. The seats are designed to keep you comfortable for long drives. There is a decent amount of space inside the cabin of the K5 with class-leading legroom at the front. Therefore, long-legged people will complain of a shortage of space when seated in the front row. Despite having a rakish swoopy roofline, the K5 has lots of room at the back. While its rear legroom is less than its rivals, it's sufficient for adults.

The trunk capacity is one of the best in the class at 16 cu-ft. Folding down the rear seat can open more space when needed to accommodate more cargo. You can easily haul a couple of grocery bags. Coming to the infotainment system, an 8-inch touchscreen is offered as standard which gets bumped to 10.25-inch on GT-Line and higher trims. The system will be the latest version of Kia's UVO infotainment system.

The infotainment is simple and fast. While the smaller screen features wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the larger screen needs a corded connection for some weird reason. The larger screen also replaces physical buttons for touch-sensitive buttons. As standard, there is a 6-speaker audio system on offer but audiophiles can enjoy an impressive 12-speaker Bose audio system as well, but it is only available on the top-end EX trim. Some other features are:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Push-button start
  • Power front seats
  • Heated & ventilated front seats
  • 8/10.3-inch touchscreen w/ smartphone integration
  • Navigation system
  • Wireless charging

Exterior
6.0/10

The Kia K5 has the style and substance to set it apart from other midsize family sedans- Edmunds

Considering the fact that the Kia K5 was launched just last year, there are no changes made apart from the new Kia logo. It is longer and wider than the Optima it replaced last year and its hunkered-down sporty stance also adds to the appeal of the car. A set of 16-inch alloy wheels is standard for the K5 and there are no options available here as well. Upgrading to the GT-Line above trims will bump the wheel size to 18 inches, with the GT-Line featuring a unique sporty design.

The larger wheels do not compromise the ride quality and are also more appealing than the standard wheels. The GT-Line body kit takes styling cues from the K5 GT and features a gloss-black spoiler and sportier bumper design. LED headlights and full-width LED taillights are standard while LED foglights and a panoramic sunroof are available from GT-Line onwards. That being said, the aggressive front fascia with a broad front tiger-nose grille and dramatic-looking LED DRLs remain standard across all configurations.

In terms of dimensions, the Honda Accord is the widest of the lot which explains the spacious cabin and trunk. The Nissan Altima's ground clearance favors its smooth ride quality. While the Toyota Camry does offer some sharp styling, neither Accord nor Altima invokes any emotions similar to that of the K5. Some other exterior features include:

  • LED auto high-beam headlights
  • LED DRLs

2022 Kia K5 vs 2022 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is slightly more costly than the K5. It offers superior performance no matter which engine you pick and excellent driving dynamics. The fuel economy is also slightly better on the Accord but the K5 stands out in the crowd with an impressive warranty program. The Accord offers a roomier cabin among the two. The latter is a value-for-money car with great features and safety aids.

2022 Kia K5 vs 2022 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry comes with two powerful engines along with a hybrid engine while the K5 comes in two engine options. The Camry offers great performance along with comfortable ride quality. Inside, the rear row in the Camry is more spacious but its trunk volume is smaller than the K5. Both the sedans scored top ratings in terms of safety but again, the K5 is the one that offers more value for money.

2022 Kia K5 vs 2022 Nissan Altima

The Nissan Altima is less athletic but it offers a cushioned ride and is equally as frugal as the K5. The K5 is the more spacious one as well with more legroom at the front. The Altima's cabin is not as refined as the K5 which is more stylish but it offers plenty of features. The impressive warranty and high resale value along with more technology on offer make the K5 the obvious choice between the two.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Kia K5 manages to stand out from the crowd of cars where most cars look alike. Then it even offers a sportier design with the GT-Line configuration and comes at a far more affordable price tag for its segment. The standard engine has enough grunt and yet is as frugal as its competitors. The decently spacious cabin, a larger trunk, plenty of safety and creature comforts, and an impressive warranty to offer, makes the K5 a strong offering in the midsize sedan segment.
