Overall Rating
The Kia Soul is quite a quirky looking subcompact SUV that offers a lot of bang for your buck. It is practical as well as loaded and it is not hard to see why it is one of Kia’s top-selling cars even though it comes with an unconventional design. Nothing has been made official by Kia regarding the 2022 model of the Soul. Thus, the details are high speculative but as per most rumors, the 2022 Kia Soul will offer a hybrid powertrain and can even get a design update.
The 2022 Kia Soul has prided itself in being able to deliver utility and style. It is available for sale this year with some nifty changes. The 2022 Soul now gets a massive 10.3-inch touchscreen with navigation as standard on all but the LX trim. The Technology package available for the LX trim adds some latest driver aids. Also, manual transmission is no longer available. The Soul also gets Kia's new logo as well .
All these changes lead to a slight bump in price with a base MSRP of $19,290. The Soul retains its two engines- a 147-hp 2.0L and a 201-hp turbocharged 1.6L. Sadly, it is only offered in an FWD configuration. The Soul offers a roomy and utilitarian interior aided by a user-friendly infotainment system. It slots into competition with the Hyundai Kona, the Honda HR-V, and the Subaru Crosstrek.Â
The S trim seems like a good pick as it packs a lot of comfort features for the price such as a 10-way power driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, navigation system, HD radio, wireless charging and an array of safety features.

Fortunately, the Soul’s trim levels are nicely equipped- Autotrader
Kia offers the 2022 Soul in a total of 6 trims- LX, S, GT-Line, X-Line, EX, and Turbo. It has a starting price of $19,290 with prices ranging up to $27,890 for the Turbo trim. A destination charge of $1,750 is added separately at the time of purchase. This year, Kia has shuffled features for some trims. Also, the manual transmission has been dropped from the lineup.
Features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, wireless charging, and two additional USB ports are now standard on the S, GT-Line, and X-Line models. The base LX trim is now eligible with all available driver aids with the Technology package. Also, a new 10.3-inch touchscreen is now standard on all models except for the LX trim.

Maximum acceleration from the 2.0-liter engine is a little lacking, but the Soul feels perfectly spry around town- Edmunds
The Kia Soul is available with two engine options. A 2.0L inline- engine is found on almost every Soul and it makes 147 hp and 132 lb-ft. of torque. The manual transmission has been discontinued and CVT is the only option. The Turbo trim houses a 1.6L turbocharged inline-4 engine that develops 201 hp and 195 lb-ft. of torque. This engine is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission.
Driving the Soul feels more like a hatchback than an SUV. It feels nimble around the corners with considerable body movements. The steering feels light and well connected to the road. The tight turning radius helps to take short turns much easier. The suspension setup is a strut suspension in the front and a torsion beam in the rear. Therefore, the ride quality is a bit on the firmer side but the ride quality is mostly comfortable.
The base engine is adequately powerful for cruising around the town while the extra punch from the turbocharged engine benefits from a quicker acceleration. The Soul can do a 0-60 MPH sprint in 8 seconds and a quarter-mile mark in 16.4 seconds. The Turbo variant can sprint in just 6.4 seconds. The 4-wheel disc brakes have assuring stopping power and can stop this vehicle from 60 MPH in 115 feet.

From the above table, it is clear that the Soul performs much better than its classmates on the road. However, it misses an AWD drivetrain, which can be a dealbreaker for some. The pricey Subaru Crosstrek comes standard with a manual transmission, which is good news for enthusiasts. The Honda HR-V has the slowest acceleration but has one of the best driving dynamics in the segment.
The Soul’s more frugal than it looks- The Car Connection
One of the reasons why the Kia Soul has been so popular in its segment is due to its superior fuel efficiency figures. The EPA-estimated numbers are 27 MPG in the city, 33 MPG on a highway, and 30 MPG combined. The 1.6L engine has been tuned nicely for fuel efficiency with a combined efficiency of 29 MPG.
These are healthy MPG figures for an engine that makes 201 horsepower. All models come with a 14.3-gallon fuel tank that is capable of delivering a maximum of 429 miles in mixed proportions while the Turbo trim with the 1.6L engine can manage up to 415 miles, which is still respectable for its class.

The Hyundai Kona has the best MPG figures in this competition, though it houses the same engine as the Soul. The Honda HR-V's fueled economy is very similar to the Soul but it delivers the least driving range here. Meanwhile, the manual transmission in the Subaru Crosstrek drinks a lot of fuel but the CVT is just fine.
As for interior design and quality, it's pretty good considering the price point- Kelly Blue Book
Stepping inside the Kia Soul, you will notice some unique styling elements. The build quality is decent with some soft-touch surfaces. There is still a lot of plastic in the cabin but overall, you won't find a lot to complain about inside the Soul. It is now more feature-rich than ever as Kia shuffled a few features between trims. This five-seater gets standard cloth upholstery while synthetic leather is only available on the top-tier Turbo trim. Â
A leather flat-bottom steering wheel is standard from the GT-Line trim but the Turbo variant adds heated functionality. The seat bottoms are cushy and supportive which makes them comfortable on long journeys. The driver's seat is a bit elevated for better outward visibility and it also gets power-adjustability for a comfortable driving position. The Soul is one of the most spacious vehicles in its class. Head and legroom are excellent in both rows.Â

The Soul has a big advantage when it comes to practicality. The standard cargo space available is 24.2 cu-ft., which can be expanded to 62.1 cu-ft. with the rear seats folded. It can easily accommodate up to six suitcases with room to spare for a soft bag. On the infotainment front, there is a big upgrade this year. The base LX trim now gets an 8-inch touchscreen while the other models upgrade to a larger 10.3-inch touchscreen with a navigation system.Â
Smartphone connectivity is possible through standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The UVO system has a clean and simple interface. Both the screens have good display quality and navigating through settings is easy thanks to the straightforward menu structure. A 6-speaker stereo is standard but the Turbo trim stands out with a Harman Kardon premium stereo system. Some other cabin highlights of the Soul are:
The exterior is one of the things that people love the most about the Kia Soul- Kelly Blue Book
The Kia Soul has been quite a distinctive car in terms of design and styling, especially for the subcompact SUV segment. Its unconventional but quirky and clever touches help it stand out in the segment full of conventional-looking cars. For 2022, it retains its boxy silhouette and doesn't get a lot of feature enhancements as far as exteriors are concerned. Upfront, you don't get the signature Tiger nose grille which sets it apart from other Kia models.
The headlights are sleek and stylish looking. From the side profile, you can notice the boxy proportions for which it is popular. The boxy design helps it liberate more room on the inside. There is a range of wheel options too - from 16-inch to 18-inch with each trim getting a unique design. Unlike its rivals, it gets a low ground clearance of 6.7 inches for easy egress and ingress. Even the rear design of the Soul stands out from the crowd.

The Subaru Crosstrek is a bulky vehicle and its wheelbase is slightly wider than the rest of the competition. Yet, the Soul's cabin feels roomier. The Honda HR-V sits a bit higher than the Soul at 7.3 inches for a better stance. The dimensions of the Hyundai Kona are almost equal to the Soul, except for their exterior styling. Some other exterior highlights are:
Kia doesn't provide standard driver-assistance technology on the base Soul, but it does for the S model and above- CarAndDriver
The 2022 Kia Soul received a 4-star overall safety rating by NHTSA as it got 4 stars for the frontal crash test. On the other hand, the IIHS honored it with a Top Safety Pick award as it scored top ratings in all crash tests. It also got a 'Superior' rating for the front crash prevention, which is really great.
Kia offers a host of driver-assist features which make your experience behind the wheel more confident. However, standard safety features are only a few which is a concern of some of the buyers. Fortunately, the barebone LX trim is now available with the Technology package that throws in all the available safety features. These features are:
The Hyundai Kona gives a neck-to-neck competition as it is its sibling. Both cars come with the same engine lineup and deliver equal performance. The Soul is a better choice if you prefer practicality as it offers more cargo space and rear passenger space. On the other hand, more standard safety tech is the plus point of the Kona. Note that the Kona also has a slightly better fuel economy.
The Subaru Crosstrek gives a head-to-head competition to the Soul with its decent performance and a standard AWD system but the Soul takes the charge with its performance, cargo space, spacious cabin, safety features, fuel efficiency, and pocket-friendly price where the Crosstrek lacks. Therefore, the Soul is the best choice for the buyers, provided you don't require an AWD setup.
The Honda HR-V is a decent choice due to its excellent build quality and frugal maintenance costs. Add to the fact that the powertrain is better, the vehicle is more reliable and is more engaging to drive. The Soul gains more points in terms of cargo space and styling factor. Since the cars are evenly matched in almost everything, it comes down to brand preference.
The 2022 Kia Soul continues to soldier on with a good blend of features and practicality while remaining easy to run and live with on a daily basis. With the manual transmission given a miss, the Soul no longer gives enthusiasts an option to get the feel of the stick shifter. However, the standard CVT makes life a lot easier and with a good increase in the features set, the Soul is sure to remain one of the best-sellers for the Korean car major.
