Overall Rating
The 2022 Kia Sportage welcomes new standard features for LX and EX along with recently appointed Nightfall Edition, all for a base price of $24,090.
The 2022 Kia Sportage flaunts a renewed trim lineup with the Nightfall Edition replacing the S trim alongside the LX, EX, and SX Turbo. Priced at a starting MSRP of $24,090, the 2022 Sportage has been released for sale with a recently refined assets upgrade including the standard panoramic sunroof for the EX and Value Edition package for the LX. Also, the Kia Sportage 2023 is all set to hit the space with a complete makeover next year to better compete against its rivals.
Costing up to $33,750 for the SX-Turbo, the Kia Sportage 2022 has been introduced in the marketplace with the two powertrains having 181 hp and 240 hp fists inherent to them. While the utility with the towing capacity of 2,000 lbs and interior cargo volume of up to 60.1 cu-ft keep it practical, the low MPG ratings do raise a few concerns when rivals like the Honda CR-V get you 30 MPG combined.Â
While the 2022 Kia Sportage EX trim seems expensive at $28,390, it adds plenty of creature comforts which adds value to the family SUV. If budget is not a constraint, the EX Technology package will add more tech to the mix.Â
The 2022 Kia Sportage EX trim is the one we recommend. The standard 181 hp engine is adequate enough to not feel the need for the turbocharged motor and with its equipment, it's the best of the bunch. At an MSRP of $28,090 for the FWD model, the EX trim gets 18-inch alloy wheels, with hands-free keyless entry, hands-free liftgate, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, and the newly standard panoramic sunroof as well.

"The driving experience in the Sportage is passable." - Kelley Blue Book
The 2022 Kia Sportage comes with two engine options. A base 2.4L I-4(LX, Nightfall, EX) that outputs 181 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque, and a turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine(SX Turbo only) that churns 240 hp with 260 lb-ft of torque. Both the powertrains are coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission and come with FWD as standard. AWD is an optional extra for $1,500. However, one may witness a drop of 3 hp in the 2.0T engine as we switch to that AWD from the FWD.
Though the 2.4L powertrain of the 2022 Sportage lags athleticism, the turbocharged engine, however, is super-entertaining. Around the city, the low-end torque surges the SUV forward in all scenarios, and the extra horsepower does help with better acceleration performance. The six-speed transmission is prompt with both engines, and shifts are lag-free and smooth. The steering is well-weighted, and there's good feedback from the wheels on straights and turns.
The suspension is stiff enough to inspire a great deal of confidence as you take on those corners effortlessly but unfortunately feels a little too bumpy around the city roads. It can do 0-60 MPH in 8.4 seconds and also manages to cover the quarter mile in 16.4 seconds with the base engine. The turbocharged engine powering the 2022 Sportage Turbo shaves off over a second in both these aspects, making it one of the quickest of the segment.

Speaking of the comparison, the Kia Sportage 2022 has the same towing capacity as that of the rivals that rests at 2,000 lbs but it costs almost $2,500 less than the Escape. It is also $2,000 lbs cheaper than the Mazda CX-5 abd $1,500 less expensive than the Tucson. But one should notice that Sportage's towing prowess reduces to 1,635 lbs as we undo those trailer brakes from the frame.
"In its segment, the Sportage lives near the bottom of the fuel-sipping hierarchy." - Car and Driver
The 2022 Kia Sportage's fuel economy is its weakest link. With the 2.4L engine and FWD, it returns 23 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 26 MPG combined. While a fuel tank capacity of 16.4 gallons gives a combined range of 426 miles at max. With AWD, this drops down to 22/26/23 MPG in city/highway/combined circumstances.
On the 2.0T I-4 with FWD, the economy dips further, at 20 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on the highway, and 23 MPG combined. With AWD, it gets close to some mid-size SUV ratings, at 19/24/21 MPG in city/highway/combined. And the peak range comes around 377 miles for this powertrain altogether.

"The 2022 Sportage isn't the most spacious compact crossover, but it stil does pretty well." - Kelley Blue Book
The 2022 Kia Sportage interior looks premium with those leather-trimmed seats having either Beige or Black or Gray accent all over them for the SX-Turbo edition. While, the Sportage 2022 in its Nightfall and EX formats adorn with Black/Gray SynTex seating. In addition to these, it has got the top-notch fit and finish of soft-touch materials with brushed aluminum inserts and satin chrome that enhancee its existing appeal.Â
As far as comfort is concerned, the Sportage 2022 interior attaches front heated seats from EX onwards as standards. However, the ventilated function for the front row remains exclusive for the SX-turbo. Not just that, it even glitters its cabin with LED interior lighting throughout the space for all except the LX trim. And, its pretty spacious 30.7 cu-ft of trunk space can be further opened up to 60.1 cu-ft of cargo space once the rear seats are folded.Â

In terms of cargo volume, the 2022 Sportage has 6.8 cu-ft smaller trunk than the 2022 Escape that further increases to 8 cu-ft when pitted against the 2022 Tucson. It even has a little more cramped rear row due to its 3-inch smaller legroom than the Hyundai Tucson and 2.5-inch more squeezed than the Escape. Apart from these, Kia has integrated an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment and 6-speaker audio unit for the LX configuration. Â
As we get in the Sportage SX-Turbo, we tend to confront the Kia Connect with 8-inch touchscreen and voice command navigation along with 8-speaker Harman Kardon Premium Surround Sound. The Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility have been incorporated too inside this cabin as per trim specifics. A few key features on offer inside the 2022 Kia Sportage interiors include:Â
"It looks tidy and trim, without an ounce of visual fat." - The Car Connection
The 2022 Kia Sportage has been designed to have a front that appears raised and looks aggressive with its tiger-nose grille, sharp front bumper, and air intake. And its muscular stance is complemented by an equally fashioned rear having either sleek halogen or LED (SX Turbo) taillights beside those dual exhausts and roof spoiler.
Styled in 6 exterior colors such as Pacific Blue and Steel Gray, the Sportage 2022 exterior justifies its bossy presence through its 17-inch, 18-inch, and 19-inch alloy wheels. For 2022, the Nightfall Edition does make a difference, with its glossy dark gray finish grille with a piano black frame, blacked-out roof rails and Nighfall Special badging.

As per data, the Kia Sportage 2022 is 400 lbs lighter than the Mazda CX-5 because of which it is certain to have lower center of gravity and better stability around the corners without any drive assists. While, the Tucson gets 3-inch longer wheelbase than the Sportage that might help former in straight line stability.
"Sportage comes with a strong array of safety tech." - TrueCar
The 2022 Kia Sportage gets top ratings from both the NHTSA and the IIHS. The NHTSA rated the Sportage with an overall rating of 5-stars and 4-stars for the rollover test. The IIHS gave Sportage a rating of 'Good' in most of the tests, and the 2021 model also received the 'Top Safety Pick' award. The Sportage gets Kia's Iso-Structure Construction, which incorporates the use of high-tensile strength steel alloys to help improve rigidity.
A few of the active and passive safety features available on the 2022 Kia Sportage are mentioned below:
While the 2022 Escape comes at a higher price, the more powerful engine makes it quicker and more capable than the Sportage. It is also far more efficient and much more spacious for both the passengers and their cargo. The longer list of standard features and a solid safety record makes the Ford Escape the preferred choice here.
The CX-5 is more expensive than the Sportage, but isn't particularly quicker either. It can tow a bit more and returns marginally better city MPG figures, but both offer similar cabin space. Also, the list of standard safety features and technology isn't too far apart. While the Mazda is better to look at and has better road manners, it is better to opt for the 2022 Sportage and save a few bucks.
Although both the cars share the same DNA, the 2022 Kia Sportage and the 2022 Hyundai Tucson vary on some extremely subtle grounds. The Kia Sportage is focused more on a spirited and engaging driving experience coming from the extremely potent powertrain. The Hyundai Tucson is more of a poised soft-roader, with its finely tuned suspension and an aesthetically built interior providing a rich ride quality.
The 2022 Kia Sportage tries to make a strong case for itself with its interior and handling, but there's no denying that it's behind times. Comfortable seating, easy technology, and simple driving make this car a treat around the city. However, with the launch of a new and much-improved generation in 2023, the 2022 Sportage does less to justify its standings against its rivals. As a result, it's better to look at other alternatives or wait for the 2023 Sportage which gets a complete overhaul.
