The 2022 Kia Sportage is a 4-trim SUV on offer beginning the lineup with the LX model that costs $24,090. While the newest member of the Sportage 2022, Nighfall, brings in SynTex Seating, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning, and BLIS as extra add-ons for $28,090.      

The EX trim is the next one to introduce itself with an investment of $28,390 for assets like the heated front seats and smart powered liftgate. And the SX-turbo of the Kia Sportage 2022 at $33,750 enjoys the services of Smart Cruise Control, 8-speaker Harman Kardon Premium Surround Sound, and Kia Connect. The 2022 Kia Sportage comes with two engine options. A base 2.4L I-4(LX, Nightfall, EX) that outputs 181 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque, and a turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine(SX Turbo only) that churns 240 hp with 260 lb-ft of torque. Both the powertrains are coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission and come with FWD as standard. AWD is an optional extra for $1,500. However, one may witness a drop of 3 hp in the 2.0T engine as we switch to that AWD from the FWD. 

Though the 2.4L powertrain of the 2022 Sportage lags athleticism, the turbocharged engine, however, is super-entertaining. Around the city, the low-end torque surges the SUV forward in all scenarios, and the extra horsepower does help with better acceleration performance. The six-speed transmission is prompt with both engines, and shifts are lag-free and smooth. The steering is well-weighted, and there's good feedback from the wheels on straights and turns.

The suspension is stiff enough to inspire a great deal of confidence as you take on those corners effortlessly but unfortunately feels a little too bumpy around the city roads. It can do 0-60 MPH in 8.4 seconds and also manages to cover the quarter mile in 16.4 seconds with the base engine. The turbocharged engine powering the 2022 Sportage Turbo shaves off over a second in both these aspects, making it one of the quickest of the segment.  

Speaking of the comparison, the Kia Sportage 2022 has the same towing capacity as that of the rivals that rests at 2,000 lbs but it costs almost $2,500 less than the Escape. It is also $2,000 lbs cheaper than the Mazda CX-5 abd $1,500 less expensive than the Tucson. But one should notice that Sportage's towing  prowess reduces to 1,635 lbs as we undo those trailer brakes from the frame.

The 2022 Kia Sportage's fuel economy is its weakest link. With the 2.4L engine and FWD, it returns 23 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 26 MPG combined. While a fuel tank capacity of 16.4 gallons gives a combined range of 426 miles at max. With AWD, this drops down to 22/26/23 MPG in city/highway/combined circumstances.

On the 2.0T I-4 with FWD, the economy dips further, at 20 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on the highway, and 23 MPG combined. With AWD, it gets close to some mid-size SUV ratings, at 19/24/21 MPG in city/highway/combined. And the peak range comes around 377 miles for this powertrain altogether.

In terms of mileage, the Sportage 2022 has 4 MPG lower efficiency than the Escape that makes it struggle against the Escape in combined range by 18 miles. On the other hand, the Kia Sportage 2022 can outclass the 2022 Mazda CX5 by some 28 miles, thanks to its 1.1-gallon bigger fuel tank.

2022 Kia Sportage vs 2022 Ford Escape

While the 2022 Escape comes at a higher price, the more powerful engine makes it quicker and more capable than the Sportage. It is also far more efficient and much more spacious for both the passengers and their cargo. The longer list of standard features and a solid safety record makes the Ford Escape the preferred choice here. 

2022 Kia Sportage vs 2022 Mazda CX-5

The CX-5 is more expensive than the Sportage, but isn't particularly quicker either. It can tow a bit more and returns marginally better city MPG figures, but both offer similar cabin space. Also, the list of standard safety features and technology isn't too far apart. While the Mazda is better to look at and has better road manners, it is better to opt for the 2022 Sportage and save a few bucks. 

2022 Kia Sportage vs 2022 Hyundai Tucson

Although both the cars share the same DNA, the 2022 Kia Sportage and the 2022 Hyundai Tucson vary on some extremely subtle grounds. The Kia Sportage is focused more on a spirited and engaging driving experience coming from the extremely potent powertrain. The Hyundai Tucson is more of a poised soft-roader, with its finely tuned suspension and an aesthetically built interior providing a rich ride quality.

The 2022 Kia Sportage tries to make a strong case for itself with its interior and handling, but there's no denying that it's behind times. Comfortable seating, easy technology, and simple driving make this car a treat around the city. However, with the launch of a new and much-improved generation in 2023, the 2022 Sportage does less to justify its standings against its rivals. As a result, it's better to look at other alternatives or wait for the 2023 Sportage which gets a complete overhaul.
