"Land Rover is introducing a V-8 engine into the Defender lineup for 2022: the 518-hp Supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 that's found in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models." - Car And Driver
The 2022 Defender is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (P300) that outputs 296 hp and has a torque output of 295 lb-ft. If that isn’t enough for you the 2022 Defender packs in another electric supercharger equipped 395 hp 3.0L I-6 which comes with a 48-volt hybrid system (P400). And for those looking to go bonkers on this off-roader Land Rover has also thrown in a 518-hp supercharged V-8 engine (P525), which is limited to the top two trims only.
The car gets an 8-speed transmission with a two-speed transfer case and features four-wheel drive and locking differentials for navigating treacherous terrain as standard. The base P300 sprints from 0-60 mph in 7.7 seconds, with a top speed of 119 mph. The P400-powered models have a 6.2 seconds 0-60 mph time, whereas the P525 Defender takes only 5 seconds to hit the 0-60 mph mark. The Defender is an easy vehicle to drive, thanks to the precise handling and steering with lots of feedback.
The 2022 Defender gets a unibody construction which means the chassis and shell are all made into one piece thus it replaces the old solid axles with a fully independent suspension platform of the previous-gen Defender. The standard suspension setup uses coil springs, but you can opt for your Defender to come with air springs that also lets you adjust ride height. Speaking of which, Defender has 11.5 inches of ground clearance and can wade through 35 inches of water.

The Defender's 2.0L engine is one of the most powerful units in the segment. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler's 3.6L V6 mill ranks second with its 285 ponies and 260 lb-ft of twisties. The Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro's 4.0L V6 engine is the biggest displacement engine in the class yet belts out the meekest power figures. The Land Rover Defender with its base 2.0 engine does 0-60 mph in 7.7 seconds with such numbers the Defender can overtake its rivals with ease. The Defender has a top speed of 119 mph.

The EPA's fuel economy ratings for the various Defender models show little variation. For instance, the Defender 90 with the four-cylinder oil burner returns around 18 mpg in the city and 21 on the highway. The Defender 90’s six-pot oil burner will return 17 mpg in the city but on the highway, the mileage goes up to 22 mpg. The Defender 110 with the six-pot oil burner has the same mileage as the ’90s six-pot oil burner.

The Jeep Wrangler's fuel efficiency outshines the entire segment. It is capable of doing up to 22 MPG in city traffic conditions and 25 mpg while cruising down highway lanes. Considering that the Wrangler is a fully-fledged off-roader, the fuel efficiency surely is really impressive. However, the Defender gets the biggest fuel tank of the lot, and in turn, offers a better range than all its rivals.

"Finally, the Defender will have a new 11.4-inch touchscreen with curved glass available as an option." - Edmunds
The Defender's cabin merges the rugged Land Rover DNA with premium modern touches in a very clean manner. Exposed rivets in the door panels remind us of the earlier Defenders, and the magnesium beam that runs the full width of the dashboard isn't entirely cosmetic—it's also structural. Quality and finish levels are top-notch, and the premium materials, soft-touch plastics, and unique trims add a luxury sense to this interior. The front seats in the 2022 Defender have a lot of space, ready to accommodate drivers of all shapes and sizes. There's decent support on offer, and the thick cushioning allows for comfortable long drives. In the four-door version, the rear seats are super comfortable and have excellent headroom and legroom on offer.
Lower trim seats come with cloth upholstery, whereas higher trims get premium leather upholstery. The seats come with heating and ventilation functionality, and the front seats are power-adjustable. The doors open wide, and the grab handles make ingress and egress an easy task. Large windows, a tall seating position, and the massive mirrors give an excellent view of the world outside, with no problems of visibility. Behind the rear seats, cargo space is limited. To accommodate large items the rear seats are foldable, or a roof-top cargo carrier can be installed in the Defender. Under the infotainment display, a trapezoidal extension of the dashboard provides a place for buttons and switches for the climate-control system and driving modes.

The shift lever and ignition switch are also mounted on this center stack rather than the center console. As an added flexibility feature, the center console can be flipped back to accommodate a jump seat between the driver and passenger. As for the competitors, the 4Runner takes the lead in terms of cargo space but loses out in the interior space part to both the Defender and the Wrangler. While the leg space on offer in all the three SUVs upfront is similar, the Wrangler offers the most front legroom and headroom. In the rear as well, the Defender and the Wrangler outshines the 4Runner in terms of legroom. The Defender's 15.6 cu-ft cargo capacity is not the best, but loading and unloading luggage is easy.
The Defender's infotainment system is a 10-inch touchscreen system that runs a new interface for Land Rover called Pivi Pro, and a larger 11.4-inch display is available. Compared to the rest of the Land Rover lineup's Touch Pro Duo interface, the Defender's system relies on a single touchscreen instead of two. This has two advantages, one being it's quicker to respond, and second it can get OTA updates. Also, there are numerous connectivity options in the form of wireless charging and USB ports. Phone integration is seamless, and we recommend using the phone's voice controls instead of the built-in voice command system. Some interior features on the Defender are:

"Overall, the Defender 90's body is about 17 inches shorter than the 110's and its wheelbase is abbreviated by nearly the same amount. These changes help give the vehicle a sportier, even more capable appearance." - CNet.com
The 2022 Land Rover Defender was designed from scratch and gets a fresh and modern design language. The car looks boxy and has several tweaks to give it a rugged and strong character. The color options complement the design of the vehicle and everything has been designed or built on purpose. The vehicle boasts tremendous off-road capabilities and gets functional mods on the exteriors. The 2022 Land Rover Defender looks simple and sophisticated
Overall, the new Defender looks smart and the build quality too is impressive. The two-door version of the vehicle looks compact and extremely modern. The alloy wheels are large and go well with the design. The rear on the other hand may not be liked by everyone. The tailgate-mounted spare wheel looks nice and the square-shaped LED taillights gel in well with the design of the car. Dimensionally, the Defender is 180 inches long, with a curb weight of 4,550 lbs, and a wheelbase of 101.9 inches.

In terms of exterior dimensions, the Defender is not a large vehicle, but its styling gives it a better road presence and better off-roading capabilities. The 4Runner is the heaviest of the three cars, and has the most length as well, and is 11 inches longer than the Defender. It also has the most wheelbase. The Wrangler sports a tall ground clearance of 10.8 inches. Some of the exterior features on the Defender are:

The Jeep Wrangler and the Defender are both very capable off-roader cars, and much of their build is focused to take on any terrain at any time with their tall ground clearance. Both these cars also have a ton of engine options and come with available hybrid powertrains as well. The Wrangler, as well as the Defender, are available in 2-door and 4-door versions. The Wrangler is much cheaper than the Defender but it is not as practical as the Defender on normal road conditions. The Defender is expensive even in the base form, but it is the right choice to make.
Both the 2022 Toyota 4Runner and the Defender are highly capable off-roaders that have all the right equipment for any terrain. The 4Runner boasts of Toyota's reliability and high resale value and is priced much lower than the Defender. The Defender has a refined and smooth Inline-6 engine and comes with a hybrid powertrain. The Defender is a more modern and luxurious option to go with, whereas the 4Runner is quite premium and comfortable. All in all, the Toyota is a better option as it does most of the off-roading work that the Defender does, but comes with better reliability and resale value.
The 2022 Land Rover Defender at $47,700 definitely makes a strong case as a hardcore luxury off-roader car with its refined engine options and a smooth gearbox. On the inside, the Defender packs in the right amount of creature comforts and practical features, while not compromising on the quality in any way. This midsize SUV has got the looks as well and sits perfectly between the Jeep and the Toyota on one side, and the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon on the other side, appealing to most buyers with everything it offers.
