The GX 460 is generally smooth and airy without being floaty or buoyant- Edmunds
Under the hood, there is a 4.6L V8 engine that powers the Lexus GX 460. This engine churns out 301 hp and has a peak torque of 329 lb-ft. These figures make this vehicle capable of conquering off-road terrains without breaking a sweat. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission which feels a bit outdated while a 4WD drivetrain is standard. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 6,500 pounds.
Unlike many modern luxury SUVs that boast car-like handling, it is missing in the GX 460 due to its body-on-frame structure. Like the steering, the suspension is has a certain level of smoothness and accuracy thanks to the double-wishbone and multi-link suspensions fitted in the front and rear. It's got a little bit of a body roll but the ride quality is really smooth. The GX 460 blasts over all kinds of terrains and it does so with confidence.
The V8 offers an unmistakable swell of power but it's no good in terms of acceleration due to its heavy curb weight. It can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in a mere 7.2 seconds and covers a quarter-mile distance in 15.6 seconds. Of course, these numbers are not impressive but when you put your foot down, it actually has a nice, satisfying V8 rumble. Coming to braking performance, the GX 460's brakes do a fine job in bringing this SUV to rest in 133 feet.

Owing to its low curb weight and punchy V6, the Acura MDX is the quickest SUV among the lot, despite being underpowered. The Lincoln Aviator has the best power outputs but performance-wise it is behind the MDX. Even the Volvo XC90 performs better than the GX 460 but none of these rivals can match the off-road prowess offered by the GX 460.
The 4.6-liter V8 delivers plenty of power, but also uses plenty of gas- Kelly Blue Book
The old 4.6L V6 engine takes its toll on the fuel economy and combined with the heavy curb weight which weighs around 5,126 pounds results in the worst fuel economy in the competition. The EPA-estimated ratings are 15 MPG in the city driving, 19 MPG on the straight highways, and 16 MPG under the combined conditions.
Another disappointing thing is that it drinks only premium fuel. Thankfully, it gets a large 23-gallon fuel tank, due to which it delivers up to 345 miles in the city while on the highway, it can stretch up to 437 miles. In combined form, it can drive up to 368 miles before refueling. These figures are still the lowest in the segment.

The Volvo XC90 has somewhat better ratings than the other competitors but it is the most fuel-efficient here. Similarly, the Lincoln Aviator is more efficient than the Acura MDX, and considering that it makes the most power among the lot, its fuel economy is really good. The Acura MDX's large tank results in the best driving range in this competition.

The Lexus GX 460 has a pretty dated cabin design. As for the materials used and build quality, they are top-notch materials. The GX 460 has three rows of seating and has a seating capacity of 7 or 6 with the second-row captain chairs. The red leather seats try to keep the cabin fresh but the new Black Line Special Edition trim gets black faux-leather upholstery and a black headliner. The steering wheel is also pretty old but it comes with wood-leather trim.
The seats are soft and comfortable but the front seats can be electrically adjusted in just 10 directions but there's plenty of passenger space on offer. In the second row, the comfort is as good as the front and has enough space even for the tall passengers. Getting into the third row requires some extra effort. Headroom is manageable but legroom is subpar and can be only used to accommodate kids. The third-row headrests flip down for better visibility.Â

One of the problems with the GX 460 is the lack of enough cargo space. With the third-row seats up, Lexus claims there are 11.6 cubes of space available but practically that's just vertical space. Hence, most users will fold down the third row to get 46.7 cu-ft. of space. Finally, with the second-row folded, there is 64.7 cu-ft. of space available which is paltry in comparison to its segment rivals. For the infotainment system, the GX 460 gets a new 10.3-inch touchscreen display this year.Â
This is the first technology upgrade the GX 460 received in years. This display sits atop the center stack and finally, both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard. Unlike the previous display, this display has rich graphics and is very easy to use. A 9-speaker sound system is standard but you can upgrade to a 17-speaker Mark Levison surround sound system on higher trims. Some main highlights of the cabin are:
The appearance of the Lexus GX does an excellent job displaying its character as rugged yet luxurious- Kelly Blue Book
The 2022 Lexus GX 460 retains that old-school boxy look but with some stylish front fascia just like the other Lexus’ in the market. Now for 2022, Lexus has introduced a new Black Line Special Edition trim level that adds black exterior trims, and unique 18-inch black 6-spoke alloys. Then there is the Nori Green paint available for the GX 460 for the first time. Upfront, it has that large Lexus spindle front grille and on either side resides the premium triple-beam LED headlights that look sharp.
On the side profile, the roof rails and power-adjustable heated side mirrors are standard. Other than that, there is an illuminated running board. The wheel options include 18 and 19-inch alloy wheels. These wheels keep 8.1 inches above the ground, which complements its off-roading stature. It has a short wheelbase than its rivals and hence, the third row doesn't have much legroom. The rear-end of this car would remind you of old Toyotas and their famous boxy design.

The Lincoln Aviator might have 356 pounds less weight than the Lexus but its longest body and 119.1 inches of wheelbase make it somewhat unstable on high speed turns and hard to take shorter turns. The Volvo XC90 has the best proportions with the least bodyweight on the list and plus the ground clearance of 8.8 inches really provide a real SUV stance. The low curb weight of the Acura MDX assists in its quick agility. Some main exterior highlights are:
The GX comes equipped with driver-assistance features that can help you avoid accidents- CarAndDriver
The 2022 Lexus GX 460 hasn’t been crash-tested either by the NHTSA or the IIHS, but the strong build quality of Lexus has always been regarded. To keep all seven passengers safe inside the cabin in the event of a crash, Lexus has provided a total of 10 airbags. This can help mitigate severe injuries.
The GX 460 may be an outdated luxury SUV in terms of powertrain and features but Lexus has ensured the safety of the passengers with the Lexus Safety System+ that is standard in this off-roader. Also, the parking assist with front and rear parking sensors is made standard this year. Some other features are:
The Acura MDX is a cheaper and much better option than the GX 460. It houses a capable V6 that offers an agile acceleration and good gas mileage. When it comes to towing heavy items or crawling on rougher terrains, the GX 460 shines in this area. The MDX's cabin feels less opulent but it offers more cargo room than the GX 460. It also stands out with an astoundingly long list of safety techs.
The Lincoln Aviator isn’t for off-road adventures but it surely has a more powerful engine as compared to the GX 460. It delivers a cushy ride and swift acceleration. The Aviator also boasts an elegant interior and a large cargo hold while the GX 460's cabin has an outdated design. Also, its fuel economy is much better than the GX 460. There's no doubt that the Aviator is a better luxury SUV than the GX 460.
The Volvo XC90 scores the highest marks in the fuel efficiency and cargo department. Both its engines offer zippy performance and it is much quicker thanks to its low curb weight but its tow ratings are less. Inside, all three rows are adult-friendly and the infotainment system is also user-friendly. The XC90 also shines in terms of safety but it is not off-road capable like the GX 460.
The Lexus GX 460's powertrain and cabin design has gone very outdated and this is what the Japanese automakers need to consider if they want to sell their vehicle in the market. Surely the exterior styling of this off-roader grants it a look that makes it stand out in the herd of other SUVs but this won’t go much further if the fuel-guzzling nature and lazy attributes of GX 460 haven’t been answered.
