The 2022 Lexus RX 450h is a standalone trim that sits just above the base RX 350 model and shares the majority of its features. While the base 350h trim starts at $47,795 for the AWD variant, the RX450h gains a premium and gets the MSRP to $49,095 for standard AWD and a slightly more powerful hybrid powertrain. The extended wheelbase RX 450hL is available with a $3,390 premium over the base trim but also features a third row of seats and a few additional features. 

Lexus also offers a long list of optional packages to better spec your SUV. The affordable Premium package adds walnut or bamboo interior trims and memory functionality for just $480 while the Luxury package costs a whopping $3,810. It features larger 20-inch wheels, heated wood and leather steering wheel, wood interior inlays, and many more features. Additionally, one can also opt for standalone features but they end up costing even more if not chosen wisely. 

Since the 2022 Lexus RX450h is available as a standalone model, there is nothing much to recommend. That being said, Lexus offers plenty of options packages and while they do add value and convenience to the SUV, it appreciates the prices considerably. Therefore, one needs to keep an eye on the tab while selecting from the long list of standalone options and packages.

Under the hood of the 2022 Lexus RX 450h, a 3.5L V6 is paired up with a couple of electric motors, one on each axle. These motors are powered by a 37-kWh nickel-metal-hydride battery pack that works together with the engine. This powertrain outputs a very healthy 308 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque that is sent to all four wheels as standard via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The engine powers the front wheels solely while the dual-motor setup spins the rear wheels. 

In the city, the powertrain is supremely comfortable and smooth with the battery being able to run the SUV in electric-only mode. Though the transmission is quick to respond, there is no surge of torque in spite of the electric setup. That being said, the vehicle dynamics of the car is soft and composed when driving sedately. Push it around the bends and the weight-shifting unsettles the ride. The light steering aids in maneuvering the SUV around the tight city lanes.

Though there is a decent amount of power and torque on offer, it isn't the greatest performer in the straight lines. While it performs better than the RX 350, the 6.6 seconds taken by the RX 450h for the 0-60 mph sprint and the 15.1 seconds taken to cover the quarter-mile are slow in terms of segment standards. That being said, Lexus has done a decent job in the towing department as the 2022 RX 450h can tug 3,500 lbs with relative ease. 

With an electrically assisted V6 under the hood, the Lexus fails to climb higher in the output game when compared to the other rivals. While both the BMW and Range Rover are quicker by over half a second in the 0-60 mph test, the Velar has a much higher top speed as well. The Audi Q5 is priced competitively as the RX 450h but is quicker off the mark. The Velar is the most expensive one here while the Q5 is pricier than the Lexus by around $4,000.

One of the main reasons for going for a hybrid powertrain over a gasoline-only powertrain is fuel economy, a parameter where the 2022 Lexus RX450h truly excels. According to the EPA, the hybrid powertrain under the hood accounts for 31 MPG in the city and 30 MPG combined. The RX 450hL extended wheelbase version drops these figures by 1 MPG in each aspect. Together with the large 17.4-gallon fuel tank, the RX offers a solid 500-mile range. 

The Lexus takes the game here with the best-in-class fuel-efficiency features while also being aided by the largest tank to take care of the range. This makes it king in this comparison with a very frugal powertrain and long driving range. The Range Rover Velar has a large gas tank capacity as well but offers a shorter range than the Q5, which is far more efficient. The X3 has the smallest fuel tank and isn't that frugal either, therefore has the shortest driving range.

The interior of the 2022 Lexus RX 450h has posh materials which include soft leather, soft plastics, and textured metallic & wood trims. The door panel is covered in NuLuxe upholstery and has beautiful contrast stitching done to it and can further be upgraded to semi-aniline leather via options and various packages available. Though the build quality is top-notch, the cabin isn't ergonomic as the radio knob is a bit of a stretch while the rotary controller isn't the easiest to control either. 

The seats offer a good seating position and are comfortable & supportive as well. The second row feels comfortable too and has good knee room and headroom on offer. The front row has an ample amount of space and even the taller drivers will find it easy to find their perfect driving position. The 16 cu-ft of trunk space is where the Lexus falters as it isn't even close to the segment standards. Though, by folding down the rear seat, one can open up a maximum of 32.6 cu-ft of cargo space. 

There is no doubt that the trunk capacity of the Rx 450h is the least in this comparison, but it does offer pretty spacious passenger quarters. It has the best legroom at the front and yet does not compromise on rear-seat space. The BMW X3 offers the best headroom and trunk space but has a tighter rear seat. The Velar has more legroom than the X3 but compromises in terms of trunk space. Another highlight for the Lexus is its optional 12.3-inch infotainment screen.

The standard infotainment system comprises an 8-inch display that is operable via touch, voice commands, and a trackpad on the center console. While the other two are easy, the trackpad takes a lot of time to get used to and is over-sensitive to input which can be annoying while driving on the highway. The larger screen also adds navigation, Lexus Enform App Suite, and a 12-speaker audio setup. The standard 9-speaker audio setup can also be upgraded to 15-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system.

The Lexus RX got a massive design update for the 2020 model year but after that, there have not been any significant changes made to the design. The 2022 Lexus RX 450h looks sharp and has a very striking edge to it. The front has very clean lines and the headlight culminates in the massive grille upfront. The rear bumper has a clean look with the exhaust pipes hidden comfortably under it. Tasteful chrome embellishments add to the premium appeal of the car. 

The 18-inch alloy wheels look striking and the black wheel arches just add to the contrast. The powered tailgate adds convenience and the lip spoiler tries to give a sporty appeal to the SUV. The 8.2-inch ground clearance remains standard even with the larger optional 20-inch wheels. Lexus has added two new colors for the RX 450h which include Iridium and Cloudburst Grey, and both are offered with no additional costs. Only the eminent white pearl color is offered for a $500 premium. 

The Lexus RX 450h is larger than most of its rivals and hence is also pretty heavy, which is felt in its driving dynamics. It also has a decent ground clearance on offer which is only bettered by the Velar by almost 2-inches. The Audi Q5 is the smallest of the lot while the BMW X3 rides the lowest to the ground. Though the Lexus is the longest vehicle here, competitors offer a longer wheelbase which helps open up more space inside the cabin.

The Lexus gets a better and more spacious cabin to fit in more people, but BMW offers more technology that is a lot more intuitive to use. The cramped rear seat and no hybrid advantage in the X3 tilt the scales towards the Lexus.

While the Velar seems drastically overpriced for its class, it offers a host of the latest technology and a powerful drivetrain that can tackle almost every terrain you throw at it. Add to that the better reliability record of Lexus and more spacious passenger quarters, and the RX 450h feels a much more practical offering.
