About 2022 Lexus UX 200

3.5

Overall Rating

The Lexus UX 200 is a popular compact crossover for many. And why wouldn’t it be? It is small and easy to cruise around the town. It is handsome and eye-catching. The UX 200’s cabin is sophisticated if not very practical.

The Lexus UX 200 is a popular compact crossover for many. And why wouldn’t it be? It is small and easy to cruise around the town. It is handsome and eye-catching. The UX 200’s cabin is sophisticated if not very practical. Impressive safety ratings and a lot of standard driving assistance features make the UX 200 a safe car. It also offers the best-in-class fuel economy. That aside, the latest Lexus UX 200 belongs to the first-generation model introduced for 2019 and it is entering the 2022 model year without any major changes.

Although the Luxury trim is alluring, we suggest you stick with the base trim. Not only does it have all the minimum features for a safe and comfortable journey but also options such as a wireless charger, navigation system, head-up display, and more. Additionally, the premium package for $1,515 adds body-colored overfenders, Rain-sensing windshield wipers, Power tilt-and-slide moonroof, and heated plus ventilated front seats.

Overview

The Lexus UX 200 is a popular compact crossover for many. And why wouldn’t it be? It is small and easy to cruise around the town. It is handsome and eye-catching. The UX 200’s cabin is sophisticated if not very practical. Impressive safety ratings and a lot of standard driving assistance features make the UX 200 a safe car. It also offers the best-in-class fuel economy. That aside, the latest Lexus UX 200 belongs to the first-generation model introduced for 2019 and it is entering the 2022 model year without any major changes.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

There are three trim levels on the 2022 Lexus UX 200 lineup where the midrange UX 200 F Sport that costs $35,340 is reviewed separately. Just to give a sneak peek, it has unique wheels, LED fog lights, sport-tuned suspension, an augmented engine sound generator, and more. The other two trims are the Base and Luxury which demand $33,000 and $38,040 respectively. The base trim features a leather-trimmed steering wheel and shift knob, dual-zone climate control, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 18-in five-spoke alloy wheels, Bi-LED headlights, a 7-inch infotainment display, and simulated leather seats. The Luxury trim adds body-colored overfenders, Rain-sensing windshield wipers, Power-folding outside mirrors with auto tilt-down in reverse, and driver-side auto-dimming functionality.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

Irrespective of the trim you choose on the 2022 Lexus UX 200 lineup, a 2.0-Liter Inline-4 naturally aspirated gas engine is standard. It is betrothed to a 10-speed direct-shift continuously variable transmission. The power is given to the front wheel since the FWD is the default drivetrain and unlike rivals, there is no optional AWD system. With this arrangement, the Lexus UX 200 sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 8.9 seconds which makes the UX 200 the snail in the competition.

Even though the Lexus UX 200 does not offer a witty acceleration, it is enough to have a fun and enjoyable drive around the town. Moreover, just like the throttle response, the braking prowess of the Lexus UX 200 gets the last rank in the list. However, the UX 200 is smooth on the straight lines and it handles curves really well. The steering wheel is precise and the feedback is decent. Overall, it is a family-oriented SUV whose driving dynamics could not be compared with the German rivals. But the Lexus UX 200 is fun-to-drive and it has a playful nature.

The BMW X1 has the leading power figures among the given rivals and it is also the fastest SUV but at the same time, the Audi Q345 TFSI has the same engine output as the opponent from BMW but it is still 0.4 seconds slower. On the other hand, the Volvo XC40 T4 is the most sluggish SUV after the Lexus UX 200. The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class has decent acceleration and is following the BMW X1 sDrive28i’s lead.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

With the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, as per EPA, the 2022 Lexus UX 200 provides 29 MPG in the city, 37 MPG on the highway, and 32 MPG combined. These figures help the UX 200 to become the most fuel-efficient SUV in the segment. Now add the fuel tank with 12.4 gallons storage capacity in the equation and the UX 200 will give a combined range of 397 miles.

Despite having the best fuel economy numbers, the Lexus UX 200 couldn’t offer the class-leading range due to the small fuel tank. On the other hand, the BMW X1 sDrive28i has the biggest fuel tank but it is slightly thirstier than the rival from Mercedes-Benz. Furthermore, the Volvo XC40 T4 Momentum has the least impressive fuel economy figures. Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class offers 2/3/2 MPG less in the city/highway/combined driving conditions compared to the GLA-Class but its fuel tank (15.9 gallons) is bigger than the one present in the GLA-Class and it translates into a higher range. At the same time, the Audi Q3 returns 22 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 26 MPG combined and becomes the real fuel guzzler in the competition.

Interior
6.5/10

The interior design and high-quality material inside the Lexus UX 200 do not let you forget that it’s a luxury SUV. The seats are covered in synthetic/simulated upholstery and there are traces of the soft-touch plastic throughout the cabin. The elements inside such as center stack, dash, and vents are arranged wisely. The steering wheel and gear selector are wrapped in leather to give a nice feel. With the premium package, you can get the Washi interior trim to add some extra flavor inside. If we focus on the interior space, the front row does not disappoint since it has plenty of room but the same is not the case with the second/rear row. The Lexus UX 200 is stingy when it comes to all three dimensions in the second row: headroom, headroom, and legroom. Therefore, be prepared for the tiresome trip if you are occupying the second-row seats.

The front seats get Eight-way power adjustments and two-way lumbar support for the driver seat. However, heating and ventilated function for the front seats is optional on the base trim but standard on the Luxury trim. On the other hand, the heated steering wheel is optional throughout the trim range including the F SPORT. That aside, the rear seats have a 40/60 split-folding pattern for convenience. Some other standard cabin features given in the Lexus UX 200 include dual-zone automatic climate control with interior air filter, manual tilt/telescoping steering column, day-night rearview mirror, two 12V DC power outlets, and folding tonneau cover. Options include an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a HomeLink garage door opener.

Exterior
7.0/10

The exterior design language of the Lexus UX 200 is athletic and graceful at the same time. At the front, the hood is accompanied by some defined body lines which along with the large black grille and Bi-LED headlights give the UX 200 a menacing look. On the side profile, you won’t help but notice the chrome trim around the windows that goes really well with the new Cloudburst Gray exterior paint. Furthermore, for 2022, Lexus has also added the optional Grecian Water and Cadmium Orange paint on the palette. Lexus has also provided the optional body-colored overfenders throughout the trim range. That aside, LED taillights and an optional hands-free liftgate are present at the rear end. Some other available features on the base trim include premium triple-beam LED auto-leveling headlights with adaptive front lighting system, power tilt-and-slide moonroof, windshield wiper de-icer, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. In the meantime, aluminum roof rails and heated side mirrors are standard features. Also, the power-folding side mirrors with auto tilt-down in reverse and driver-side auto-dimming functionality come by default on the Luxury trim. The Lexus UX 200 runs on the standard 18-in five-spoke alloy wheels with dark gray and a machined finish.

The XC40 is the heaviest offering from Volvo in the competition but it also sits higher than the rest and is the tallest among the bunch. The Lexus UX 200 is the lightest one with the shortest wheelbase which explains why it lacks interior space. The BMW X1 is the least wide SUV while the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class has the largest wheelbase. Mercedes-Benz has not revealed the curb weight of the GLA-Class but we do know that the GLB-Class weighs 3,638 lbs. If Audi Q3 is considered, it replaces the Volvo XC40 as the bulkiest crossover since it has a curb weight of 3,916 lbs.

Highlights of the exterior features are:

  • 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels
  • LED taillights
  • Triple-Beam LED auto-leveling headlights
  • Aluminum roof rails
  • Power tilt-and-slide moonroof

Safety
9.3/10

The 2022 Lexus UX 200 has managed to receive an overall 5-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) but its performance in the frontal crash tests was not very impressive. At the same time, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the 2021 Lexus UX with the ‘top safety pick’ award and assigned ‘Good’ ratings in all crashworthiness tests performed on the 2022 model. That said, the 2022 Lexus UX 200 has the standard Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 which includes the pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane tracing assist, lane departure warning with steering assist, road sign assist, and intelligent high beams. Furthermore, the UX 200 also has other safety features such as 10 airbags, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, backup camera, and optional parking assist with auto braking.

Highlights of the safety features are:

  • Lane tracing assist
  • Road sign assist
  • Lane departure warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Parking assist

Lexus UX 200 vs BMW X1 sDrive28i

Just like the Lexus UX, the BMW X1 has also not received any safety award from the IIHS. But the X1’s safety ratings are inferior to the UX. That aside, when it comes to performance and driving dynamics, the BMW X1 has the upper hand without a doubt. In terms of looks, both SUVs have a very edgy design which also emits elegant vibes. On a side note, the X1 offers a bigger standard infotainment touchscreen inside. Overall, the number of standard features given on the BMW X1 is on par with the ones offered by the Lexus UX 200.

Lexus UX 200 vs Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

The GLA-Class GLA 250 is not the only child from Mercedes-Benz which is seeking to compete with the Lexus UX 200. The GLB-Class GLB 250 which is a couple of thousand bucks more expensive than its sibling is in the race with the same engine output as the GLA 250. That being said, the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is quicker on its feet and also provides a roomier cabin than the Lexus UX 200. However, many standard features on the UX 200 are optional on its GLA -Class counterpart.

Lexus UX 200 vs Volvo XC40 T4 Momentum

Like other opponents, the Volvo XC40 also has an optional AWD on offer. Furthermore, it has an optional T5 engine which is more powerful than the standard one. So, what if the base T4 Momentum trim is not very snippy, as you climb the trim ladder, the XC40 T5 is waiting to humiliate the UX 200. That aside, the Volvo XC40 is a recipient of the ‘top safety pick+’ award from the IIHS which increases its safety quotient. If we compare the exterior design, we are biased and are going to crown the XC40 as the best-looking SUV in the competition.

Final Verdict
5.0/10

The 2022 Lexus UX 200 is a good package but not good enough to bring home. Yes, it has the highest fuel economy figures and comes with plenty of features but in other areas such as cabin space, trunk capacity, and performance, it fails to leave an impression. Therefore, unless you have a brand preference and fuel economy is the top factor that can influence the last judgment, pick the BMW X1. It is fast, comes with an optional xDrive system, and it surpasses the UX 200 in terms of practicality as well.
