Lexus has packed the 2022 UX 250h with lots of features as standard. The base UX 250h starts from around $36,200 whereas the Luxury trim level is priced at $41,420. Which Trim should you buy?

We suggest that you get the base trim. There are lots of standard features with the base trim level all at $36,200. But still, if you want the added features that come with the Luxury trim level, you will have to pay around $41,240 for the same. Also, there are many optional features that will drive the price well over the $40,000 mark.

Hybrid powertrains are kind of becoming the norm these days as they are easier to implement than developing a full-blown electric vehicle. And Lexus has always been very clear with their motives. They have been improving the technology ever since. That being said, we get a 2.0 liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with an electric motor under the 2022 UX 250h Hybrid's hood. This unit produces a combined power output of 181 hp and has 151 lb-ft of torque on offer. 

Let us be honest, these are not mind-blowing figures by any means as some of its rivals do offer a lot more power and torque. And that lack of power is evident in the acceleration as the power that is available is what is transferred to the performance. Despite getting an electric motor which should theoretically help in better acceleration figures, it does not with the 2022 Lexus UX 350h. It does the 0 - 60 mph sprint in 8.6 seconds whereas the quarter-mile takes around 16.1 seconds on the 2022 UX 250h. And the UX 250h tops out at a very modest top speed of 110 mph.

Like said earlier, the 2022 Lexus UX 250h is definitely not the fastest. That can be seen when you look at its performance figures compared to rivals. Surprisingly enough, some of its rivals also lack in terms of performance. But the standout rival has been the one from its parent company. The 2022 Toyota RAV4 does the 0-60 mph sprint in just 7.4 seconds which is more than a second quicker compared to the UX 250h. The Toyota RAV4 also leads the table in terms of power.

How well does the 2022 Lexus UX 250h handle?

Though lacking in terms of performance and acceleration, Lexus had made sure that the UX 250h is a very fun car to drive. As it does stand as tall as a typical SUV and comes with slightly close to hatchback dimensions, the difference is very evident. The UX 250h thus has an upper hand in this aspect over all of its rivals. The chassis is so lively which makes you want to push around corners harder. The steering feels responsive and offers decent feedback.

There are three driving modes to choose from namely Sport, Normal, and Eco. The drive modes adjust the suspension and traction depending on the mode selected. The ride quality is as expected from a Lexus is comfortable but not the best. And for those who want the sportiest driving dynamics, going for the F Sport trim is absolutely worth it.

Braking Performance

Braking performance is very important for the 2022 UX 250h given its dimensions. To be honest, Lexus could have worked a little bit more on the powertrain given their braking performance. The 2022 UX 250h stops the fastest at 119 ft which is far better than all of its rivals. The front brake rotors are sized at 12.0-inches whereas the rear brake rotors are sized at 11.1-inches and the curb weight is around a decent 3605 lbs.

As said earlier, Lexus has done a great job with the braking system on the 2022 UX 250h. All of its rivals take around 128 or 130 ft to come to a halt from 60 mph. The UX 250h on other hand, stops at a very much better 119 ft from 60 mph. This is despite being heavier than the lightest car in this comparison, the 2022 Ford Escape hybrid.

One major reason to go with a hybrid car is for the improved fuel economy that it offers. And given its mediocre performance, the Lexus UX 250h would perform better in terms of fuel and it does indeed. The 2022 UX 250h delivers 41 mpg in the city followed by 38 mpg on the highway. The fuel tank capacity is however is the smallest in the segment by some margin at just 10.6 gallons. This happens to be the sole reason for the lowest range in the entire segment but thankfully is saved from the good fuel economy reducing the number of stops between a trip.

Yes, the Ford Escape might seem to have an upper hand with the fuel efficiency but the margin is small. It comes with the second-biggest fuel tank at 14.3 gallons which combined with its impressive fuel economy, gives it the best range overall.

Lexus has always known to put more emphasis on the interiors given they are a luxury marquee. And as expected, the same continues with the 2022 Lexus UX 250h. There is quite a lot happening on the dashboard and none of it feels too much. Lexus has played with the use of colors, layout, and leather to make it appealing and importantly it is as unique as you get in any Lexus. The quality is top-notch and all the panels and switches you touch do feel more premium than what you would do in some of its rivals.

And there are real physical switches placed perfectly and that adds to the ergonomics. The seats on the UX 250h are plush and comfortable with good levels of support. Also, they come with lots of flexibility thanks to the power-adjustable seats and memory function. And the addition of some nice creature comforts like the heated and ventilated seats do make the experience a whole lot better.

The Lexus UX 250h scores far better than all of its rivals in terms of quality, features, comfort, luxury, and front-row space. But where it lacks to all of its rivals is in terms of the second-row space. There is quite a lot of space on the UX 250h's rivals' second-row which is very evident from the table. And one aspect which is expected to get a hit by being a hybrid is cargo capacity. Again, it is the Lexus UX 250h that takes the most beating with the lowest cargo carrying capacity in the segment at 21.7 cubic feet. All of the rivals are very similar in terms of space both on the front and second-row but the RAV4 has the most cargo capacity at 37.6 cubic ft.

What's there to keep you entertained?

This is somewhere where Lexus might have to put some effort. The rivals have come a long way in terms of the infotainment system and their ease of use. Lexus still uses a touchpad controller near the gear level on the 2022 UX 250h which to be brutally honest, is a tragedy to use. This combined with the sluggish user interface makes the whole experience so bad that you will not want to use it that much especially when driving. 

The one good thing which helps is that Lexus provides both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration which helps in salvaging some of the lost experience. The base trim level gets a 7.0-inch infotainment screen whereas the range-topping trim level gets a bigger 10.0-inch infotainment screen. And like said earlier, Lexus uses the touchpad controller because there is no touchscreen support. Yes, the Lexus UX 250h's infotainment screens do not get touchscreen support in 2022 as well.
