Currently, the least expensive Maserati on sale today, the Ghibli continues to be a unique choice in the luxury mid-size sedan segment since the latest generation launched back in 2013. Although there were no major changes over the years, the Ghibli still retains its Italian flair with a unique design and potent powertrains.

With the 2022 Maserati Ghibli, there are three different trims to choose from, starting with the GT model that focuses on luxury, notable features include leather upholstery, 12-way power-adjustable front seats with heating, dual-zone climate control, a 10.1-inch infotainment system, keyless entry, power-adjustable steering column, and a suite of active safety and driver assistance features.
Upgrading to the Modena trim offers the choice of an all-wheel-drive system, a higher tuned engine, aluminum paddle shifters, and design enhancements both inside and out.
Crossing the 6-figure mark gets you the Trofeo trim, which includes a powerful V-8 engine that shares a lot of components with the V-8 found in many modern Ferrari models. The Trofeo is only available in rear-wheel-drive configuration and includes some feature additions like adaptive full LED headlights, 21-inch forged wheels, upgraded brakes, ventilated front seats, and several carbon-fiber trims inside and out.

Which trim should you buy?
Since the mid-level Modena trim includes a noticeable power bump over the base model for a modest price increase, it is the one to opt for. You get a sizable performance jump of 79 hp, optional all-wheel-drive, and aggressive design elements, all for under $5,000 over the base price. The Modena also includes some unique aluminum paddle shifters to improve the interior.
With the latest iteration, Maserati has ditched the base Inline-4 setups, and the lineup starts with the 3.0L twin-turbocharged V-6 engine that produces 345 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. While these are not groundbreaking figures, they are on par with the competition. However, the Modena trim bumps the power figures to 424 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, giving a noticeable jump in performance, and also unlocks an all-wheel-drive setup.
But, by far, the most notable engine option for the 2022 Maserati Ghibli continues to be the massive 3.8L twin-turbocharged V-8 that belts out 580 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque, giving the Ghibli supercar levels of performance. The V-8 engine is also closely related to the engine Ferrari uses in their modern lineup with some notable differences like a wet-sump and a shorter stroke. All three engines are paired to an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission that offers precise and quick shifts whenever the need arises. Both the V-6 and V-8 engines offer plenty of performance, and the V-8 stands out with an astounding soundtrack that only the Italians have mastered. Power delivery is instant and resembles a naturally aspirated unit, which is high praise for a twin-turbocharged setup. Whichever option you choose, the Ghibli will offer sprightly performance.
While acceleration figures are ordinary for the lower V-6 engines, reaching 60 MPH in 5.5 and 4.6 seconds respectively, the V-8 reaches the same pace in just 3.7 seconds.

While the Maserati Ghibli can be optioned with a powerful V-8 engine, the BMW M550i continues to blitz the competition if we consider dollar-for-dollar performance. Both the Audi S6 and Mercedes-AMG E53 come close, while the base Maserati Ghibli GT falls behind its rivals.
For all its performance and straight-line speed, the Ghibli is compromised in terms of dynamics. It can still handle corners well without any drama, but the competition has moved on with better technologies and features, making the Ghibli feel soft and slow in some situations. Missing all-wheel-drive drive in the V-8 trim also leaves it at a disadvantage when pitted against rivals, most of which include it as standard.
But, when viewed in a vacuum, the Ghibli impresses with a balanced chassis and sharp steering that is let down on occasion by excessive body roll.
With all this performance and handling on offer, the Ghibli is let down by average brakes on the lower trims. Although they respond well and provide good feedback, braking performance is average at best, and you'll be wishing for better brakes as soon as you push the Ghibli hard.
The smaller rotors are a reason for this. Fortunately, the Trofeo model addresses most of these issues with upgraded brakes and grippier tires.

Like its acceleration figures, the BMW M550i also takes the lead by offering the biggest brakes in the segment, despite being the heaviest. The Audi S6 also comes close, while both the Mercedes-AMG E53 and Maserati Ghibli GT trail the pack.
At a time where most of the competition is moving on to mild-hybrid technology to improve efficiency, the Maserati Ghibli makes no effort to improve the same, and both engine options offer average figures compared to rivals. Fortunately, the bigger fuel tank does give the Ghibli usable range on the highway.

Being performance sedans, fuel efficiency is not the highest priority for all four models. But, the Mercedes-AMG E53 impresses with high figures thanks to a mild-hybrid system. The Audi S6 also uses a similar setup to boost efficiency, while both the Maserati Ghibli GT and BMW M550i are noticeably less efficient, leading to higher running costs.
Like most Italian offerings, the 2022 Maserati Ghibli focuses on style over practicality with a high-quality cabin that looks and feels premium. Unique touches like the central dial and well-integrated touchscreen display look elegant and expensive. However, there are some complaints, the most notable of which are the average switchgear used in many areas that are shared with lower models from the Stellantis lineup.
Being a Maserati, you do get plenty of customization options from different color schemes to leather finishes. Different headliners and wood trims are also available.
Another area where the Ghibli can improve is in terms of passenger space, especially at the rear. Taller passengers will struggle with limited legroom and headroom on offer. Being a luxury sedan, you do get a comprehensive feature list with additions like power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, leather upholstery, keyless entry, and more, right from the base GT model.
Trunk space is also better than average at 17.7 cubic feet, which is among the highest in its segment, and befits the GT badge.

While there are no official specs yet, the Maserati Ghibli feels almost as spacious and practical as its rivals, and the interiors adopt a typical Italian design that stands out. But, all three German rivals offer a higher quality cabin with a more elegant and luxurious design. Overall, it will depend on personal preference, but the Ghibli does have an advantage in terms of cargo capacity.
Some notable interior features include:
After the facelift last year, all models come as standard with a capable infotainment system that uses a 10.1-inch touchscreen display mounted in the center. Base models get an 8-speaker setup, while a 10-speaker Harman Kardon and 15-speaker Bowers and Wilkins premium units are available as options. Other notable features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, built-in navigation, satellite radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, and more.
Some notable infotainment features include:
Maserati has always nailed the design of all their models and the Ghibli is no exception. From its sleek front grille to the three-side vents, the Ghibli looks stunning from every angle. The design definitely stands out among the crowd and will turn heads wherever it goes, partly because of the exclusivity. While the GT trim is fairly muted in terms of design, the Modena and Trofeo look a lot more aggressive with different front and rear fascias, bigger wheels, and carbon-fiber elements.
Maserati also offers several packages to spruce up the design further.

The 2022 Maserati Ghibli is by far the biggest option here, both in terms of dimensions and wheelbase. The BMW M550i takes the second spot with an almost identical footprint, while both the Mercedes-AMG E53 and Audi S6 are more compact in comparison. The exclusion of an all-wheel-drive system has also made the Ghibli lighter than all of its rivals.
Some notable exterior features include:
One of the more notable additions for the 2022 model is the extensive list of standard driver assistance features including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and more. The Ghibli is still based on the aging M156 platform that also underpins the Levante and Quattroporte. Being an expensive option, the Ghibli hasn't gone through any safety tests by the NHTSA or IIHS yet. But, it should offer plenty of safety owing to the array of standard safety features.
Some notable safety features include:
When comparing the base trims, there are some notable differences between the two options. For starters, the Audi S6 offers a more modern and feature-rich cabin that fits right in with the modern crowd, while the Maserati Ghibli still needs some improvement in terms of build quality and materials used. The S6 is also quicker off the line when compared to the base GT model thanks to standard all-wheel-drive and a potent V-6 powertrain. So, unless you’re looking purely at performance, and opt for the higher trims, the Audi S6 is the better option.
For customers looking for performance and driving experience above all else, the BMW 5-Series is matched by the Maserati Ghibli. But, at the limit, the BMW 5-Series still takes the lead with a well-tuned suspension setup and driving dynamics. The M550i also offers much better performance when compared to the base Maserati Ghibli. But, the Italian still has an upper hand in terms of exclusivity and design, employing a classy and sporty design, while the BMW M550i looks similar to the base model, taking an elegant approach. Overall, the BMW M550i has an upper hand in terms of value and is the better choice.
Although the Mercedes-AMG E53 is a more recent entry into the lineup, it still manages to offer everything a customer is looking for with a performance sedan. Mercedes has always had an advantage with interior quality and features, and the E53 is no different. The mild-hybrid powertrain in the E53 also offers better performance and efficiency compared to the Ghibli GT trim. Design-wise, the Maserati Ghibli still looks like a work of art when compared to the Mercedes-AMG E53, which looks too similar to the standard models. Out of the two, the Mercedes-AMG E53 is easily the better pick, especially at the price point.
Although the Ghibli enters 2022 with minimal updates, it continues to be a compelling and unique choice in the segment with its handsome looks, potent powertrains, and luxury. But, it does fall apart in the face of modern competitors, almost all of which offer better performance or luxury or both. But, if you're willing to overlook the feature misses and handling limitations, the 2022 Maserati Ghibli is an excellent choice and is one of the best Italian sports sedans at this price range.
