Overall Rating
After receiving a major facelift for 2020, the 2022 Mazda CX-30 carries forward unchanged this year at an MSRP of $24,625. It is expected to be released by the end of 2021 and should go on sale early next year. Apart from the standard 2.5L engine, there will also be a CX-30 Turbo available, and as standard, it can do 0-60 mph in 7.6 seconds.
Closer in size to the smaller CX-3 SUV, the 2022 Mazda CX-30 is a more admirable and desired subcompact SUV. The 2022 model is expected to be a carryover model, as the 2020 CX-30 did get a major update. That being said, Mazda is reportedly making AWD as standard across the lineup and should be the only change over the 2021 Mazda CX-30. The 2022 CX-30 is expected to be priced at $23,450 along with a $1,175 destination fee.
It borrows its design silhouette and feature list from the Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback and slots right between the Mazda CX-3 and CX-5 SUVs. With Mazda giving the CX-5 a facelift for the 2022 model year, we expect similar changes for next year in the CX-30. Mazda hasn't released the 2022 model yet but once it does, it faces stiff competition from the likes of Buick Encore, Honda HR-V, and Subaru Crosstrek in the compact crossover SUV segment.
Â
We would recommend opting for the Preferred trim, as it offers the most value for the buck as compared to all other trims. It gets a lot more technology and safety features than the lower trim and yet does not inflate too much in terms of price. Also, the base engine has sufficient grunt and good MPG figures which would also not increase the fuel bills.

"When it comes to the 2022 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo, the sum is greater than its handful of extra parts." - Cargurus
The 2022 Mazda CX-30 with the 2.5L NA motor will be offered in 4 trim levels, namely Base, Select, Preferred, and Premium. All of the trims will get Mazda's i-Activ AWD system as standard, and the Turbo models will be available in three different trims. The price for the 2022 Mazda CX-30 is expected to start at $24,625 for the Base trim and max out over $31,000 for the top-of-the-line Premium trim, for the ones coming with the base motor.
However, the 2022 Mazda CX-30 gets no changes in the mechanical front from the outgoing 2021 Mazda CX-30 with the base motor under the hood. Only the more expensive CX-30 Turbo trims get the latest safety features which include adaptive headlights, LED taillights, traffic jam assist, and many more. That said, most of the tech is available lower down the trim ladder which makes the CX-30 a value for money offering.

2021 Mazda CX-30 Specs and Features>>
We would recommend opting for the Preferred trim, as it offers the most value for the buck as compared to all other trims. It gets a lot more technology and safety features than the lower trim and yet does not inflate too much in terms of price. Also, the base engine has sufficient grunt and good MPG figures which would also not increase the fuel bills.
"The Mazda CX-30 was already more fun to drive than cars costing much more, and then there's a quicker Turbo model." - Thecarconnection
The standard engine in the 2022 Mazda CX-30 will be the same and will put out 186-horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque from the 2.5L displacement. A slightly more powerful engine with turbos added to the same 2.5L engine will also be available as an option in the CX-30. The turbocharged engine increases the output to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft. Both the engines are paired up with a 6-speed automatic transmission and will have AWD as standard across the lineup.
The SUV feels capable even with the base engine while the punchy turbo-4 makes the car feel more agile and potent. The automatic transmission does a fine job in most cases but ends up feeling clunky and hesitant at times. In terms of ride and handling, the ride is comfortable for most parts since larger bumps tend to rock the rear end. The steering is well-weighted and direct which provides good confidence at high-speed turns.
The base engine is good enough as the 0-60 MPH sprint comes in under eight seconds. The quarter-mile drag run is roughly 16 seconds, which is pretty fast as per the segment standards. Though opting for the turbo-4 engine makes this base engine feel bland as the powerful motor reduces the 0-60 timings to a brisk 5.7 seconds and can cover the quarter-mile in just 14.3 seconds. That being said, the top speed remains constant at 126 MPH.

The 2022 Mazda CX-30 should manage to do the 60-0 MPH braking test in just 119 feet, which comes after the 2021 Honda HR-V offering the best-in-class distance of 114 feet. While the HR-V is the most affordable, it is also the slowest off the mark. The Buick Encore comes closer to the engine output of the CX-30 and yet is around a second slower. The Subaru Crosstrek carries almost the same price as the Mazda but is also far slower.
In the 2022 Mazda CX-30, fuel economy will not be something to boast about. As the powertrain is expected to be carried over from the 2021 MY the EPA estimates that the Mazda CX-30 with the standard engine will return a maximum of 31 MPG on the highway and 26 MPG combined. The turbocharged engine on the other hand does a great job at returning 22/30/25 MPG for city/highway/combined as per the EPA ratings
These are healthy figures considering the performance-oriented nature and the standardization of AWD from Mazda. The major shortcoming for the 2022 CX-30 is its small capacity 12.7-gallon fuel tank. It manages to offer only about 390 miles of range with the standard engine and a few miles less with the turbocharged engine. This translates to more frequent gas station visits as compared to its rivals.

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek offers slightly better mpg figures than the 2021 CX-30 which is only bettered by the HR-V only sightly. The Buick too returns better fuel economy figures but all the rivals aren't that capable in the straight line. The large gas tank employed by Subaru aids it in offering a class-leading driving range while both the HR-V and Encore have similar ranges, that is about 50 miles more than the Mazda.
"The CX-30 is well appointed with enough passenger anc cargo space, where high-quality materials are used throughout and comfort is always a fore of thought." - Carbuzz
The 2022 Mazda CX-30 ‘s interior is something that will be reminiscent of the Mazda 3 but is more spacious than the CX-3. It offers an ergonomic & smart design, premium material quality, and solid build quality. The overall design is very minimalistic with the infotainment screen popping from the dash and the slim air-con vents and controls neatly laid lower down. The overall visibility is great from all sides but the rear which creates huge blindspots.Â
The seats are pretty comfortable and supportive and for added convenience, you also get the option of heated front seats. Leather upholstery, a power-operated rear liftgate, and other luxury features are offered on higher trims. There is enough space to accommodate average-sized adults comfortably at both the front and rear seats. While the 20.2 cu-ft cargo space is pretty spacious and usable which can be extended 45.2 cu-ft when the rear seats are folded down.Â

As for the competitors, the Subaru Crosstrek remains the most spacious crossover amongst all with lots of leg space but when it comes to the second-row space the HR-V is the most spacious among all. The Buick Encore is the one that feels the most compact both in terms of passenger and cargo space. That said, there is plenty of technology on offer as standard which includes the intuitive infotainment screen.
The 2022 Mazda CX-30 will come loaded with a huge 8.8-inch center-mounted infotainment system that supports the latest Mazda Connect software. There will be a multifunction command controller for the infotainment system too and it will support smart device integration such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A satellite navigation system on the go is included in the package as well. Apart from the rotary controller, the infotainment system also offers voice command functions.Â
"The CX-30 is a sophisticated and sporty entry into its class, and has striking looks and plenty of standard features." - Edmunds
The simple and sleek design language of the 2022 Mazda CX-30 will continue with the same dimensions as last year. The CX-30 is a well-proportioned and handsome SUV that offers a very sporty and stylish appeal. The front fascia comprises a large pentagonal grille in a matte finish on lower trims and a gloss finish on higher ones. Looking at the SUV from the side reveals coupe-like lines and an athletic rear end. Triangular tail lights and dual exhaust pipes give the SUV its sporty look at the back.
Despite competing in the affordable subcompact segment, the CX-30 will arrive in 2022 with an upscale design that it shares with Mazda’s other SUVs. There are 17-inch wheels offered as standard which are bumped to an 18-inch set on higher trims. The Turbo variants get a blacked-out theme for the 18-inch wheels. Ground clearance is pretty usable at 8-inches but off-roading is not a strong trait for the CX-30 in spite of the AWD drivetrain.

In terms of dimensions, the Crosstrek is the largest one here and also offers the highest ground clearance as well. The Encore and HR-V are much smaller in dimension and also ride much lower which limits their practicality. The Buick rides about 2-inch lower while the HR-V rides 2.5-inch lower than the CX-30. Honda is the lightest of the segment and while the other three are similar in terms of their curb weight.

"While all the standard driver assist tech is nice to have, its tuning leaves something to be desired." - Motortrend
There are no ratings or tests that have been performed on the 2022 CX-30 but as it is expected to be a carry-forward model and it is safe to assume the 2022 scores to be identical to that of the 2021 Mazda CX-30 model. The 2021 Mazda CX-30 received the highest 5-star rating in the overall crash safety section of the NHTSA crash test. Not just that, the 2021 CX-30 was also considered as the IIHS' Top Safety Pick. For safety, the 2022 CX-30 will have an i-Activsense feature that keeps you both focused as well as safe at all times.
Check out the latest NHTSA and IIHS safety scores of the 2021 Mazda CX-30>>
The 2022 Buick Encore loses its ground to the 2022 Mazda CX-30 due to its old style, lethargic performance, and less spacious cabin offering below-average fit and finish as well. The 2022 CX-30 will be much more fun to drive and offer better driving dynamics and impressive stopping power too. Therefore, the Buick Encore turns out to be quite mediocre in all aspects in comparison to the 2022 Mazda CX-30.
2022 Mazda CX-30 vs 2022 Honda HR-V
The HR-V is the most affordable one here but loses out in terms of performance and handling. It gains ground in the fuel efficiency and cabin space section but the CX-30 is the one with more aesthetically pleasing designs. Mazda also offers more standard features & technology and hence feels more value for money even with the higher price tag.
The 2021 Crosstrek offers a rugged design and impressive off-road capabilities that have been very well received by the market. The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek even gets a spacious cabin and a bigger boot capacity. However, it is unable to match the performance of the 2022 Mazda CX-30. It is also more frugal and hence wins the comparison between the two.
Even in terms of the interior, the Crosstrek feels a segment lower when compared to the 2022 CX-30 in design and quality front. Coming at a base MSRP of $23,000, the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is a couple of grand more expensive than the upcoming 2022 Mazda CX-30.
The 2022 Mazda CX-30 gets it all, be it in the styling department, luxury, comfort, and even the subtle off-road ability. Furthermore, the engine choices and impeccable suspension setup coupled with beefy brakes offered with the 2022 Mazda CX-30 add more value. To top it all off, the 2022 CX-30 will also be stacked with all the necessary safety and driver-assistance features as well, making it great value offering in the segment.
