About 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

3.6

Overall Rating

The Mercedes Benz G-Class is the only model from the luxury automaker that still retains the traditional design language topped with modern elements.

The Mercedes Benz G-Class is the only model from the luxury automaker that still retains the traditional design language topped with modern elements. For starters, It is a full-size 4 door SUV with rapid performance and a wide array of advanced features on board. However, it is well known for its successful history and anyone wealthy enough to buy a premium SUV would always want a G-class to be parked in their garage. We could also call it the holy grail of premium SUVs. It heads into 2022 with no major changes as it got a handful of updates last year. On the upside, it not only delivers spot-on performance but is also a capable off-roading vehicle.

As you can see, there is only one configuration on offer. Hence, we recommend the G550 for its bucket load of features and a punchy V8 engine. It comes with an all-wheel-drive option as standard. Apart from offering a wide array of features. It also comes with a handful of packages for an enhanced driving experience. To begin with, the night package plus offers darkened indicators, MB Star in Black, 20" AMG Multi-Spoke w/Black Accents, Black Front Grille, Exterior Mirrors in Obsidian Black, Exterior Lettering in Black, darkened taillights, and headlamps, and a few more features. The second package on offer is the AMG line package which offers features like AMG body styling comprising inserts in the front and rear apron in high-gloss chrome and Flared Wheel Arches. Whereas the seat comfort package offers Drive-Dynamic Multicontour Front Seats with Massage, Rapid Heating Functionality for Front Seats, and Front Ventilated Seats. Apart from these packages, it also comes with an AMG Trail package that offers features like off-road optimized suspension and all-terrain tires.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz G 550 packs a 4-liter bi-turbo V8 engine that cranks out 416 hp at 5250 rpm and 450 lb-ft of torque at 2000 rpm. This V8 engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission that sends all the colossal power via an all-wheel-drive unit that puts the maximum traction to the road in all conditions. Apart from its performance, it is also known for its off-roading capabilities. With three locking differentials, it provides great traction while driving off-road. On the flip side, the handling is not up to the mark and the steering feels slightly heavy at high speeds resulting in cumbersome handling. On the performance front, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G 550 hits 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds and covers a quarter-mile distance in 13.9 seconds which is quick indeed despite having one of the underpowered engines in its class. Moreover, it maxes out at 155 mph effortlessly and delivers a linear powerband throughout the rev range making it one of the fastest SUVs in this division. Also, it is equipped with double wishbone suspension in the front and trailing link suspension in the rear which is focused more on offering a comfortable ride rather than offering stiff ride quality.

With the least power in its segment, the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser is just not up to the mark of a good driver’s car. With only 5.1 seconds to reach from 0-60 mph, the Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography is the fastest SUV in the segment, followed by the Lincoln Navigator L Black Label which takes 5.4 seconds to propel to 60 mph. On the other hand, the Toyota Land Cruiser seems to be the slowest car in the segment with a 0-60 mph of 5.4 seconds and also has the least quarter-mile times of 15.4 seconds. The Mercedes Benz may be a bit low on power but keeps pace with all its counterparts in terms of performance.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

Surprisingly, the Mercedes Benz G550 manages to return 17 mpg in the city, 19 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg when combined and these figures turn out to be the best in class.
