Overall Rating
After launching the latest generation model last year, based on the new S-Class, the ultra-luxurious Maybach model aims to be the best luxury sedan on the market.
After launching the latest generation model last year, based on the new S-Class, the ultra-luxurious Maybach model aims to be the best luxury sedan on the market. With the mighty V-12 back in action for 2022, the Mercedes Maybach S-Class can finally stay in contention with rivals like the Bentley Flying Spur, the Rolls Royce Ghost, and the BMW M760i.
Since the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class will mostly be used as a chauffeur-driven car, there is no real reason to upgrade to the new S680 model. The standard model includes almost all the available features like power-adjustable front and rear seats with massaging, heating and ventilation, leather upholstery, 20-inch alloy wheels, soft-close doors, ambient lighting, and the V-8 powertrain get a mild-hybrid system to boost efficiency. The optional rear-seat package is also recommended to further improve the experience with more adjustability and support.

With the new S680 joining the lineup, the 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is available in two trim levels. Starting with the base S580 model, you get all the latest features and options as standard including soft-close doors, quad-zone climate control, adaptive air suspension, a 12.8-inch OLED central infotainment display with all the modern features and a 30-speaker Burmester audio system, a rear-seat entertainment system with dual displays and wireless headphones, power-adjustable seats with heating, ventilation and memory functions for both rows, ambient lighting, and a lot more.
Upgrading to the S680 model will swap the V-8 out for a powerful twin-turbocharged V-12 engine, and there are no notable additions other than the upgraded powertrain. Customers can also opt for bucket seats at the rear with even more adjustability, an extended center console, and convenient foldable tables.

The optional rear-seat package is also recommended to further improve the experience with more adjustability and support.
The base S580 models continue to get the potent 4.0L twin-turbocharged V-8 powertrain with a 48-volt hybrid system as standard, producing 496 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The integrated starter generator sandwiched between the engine is also capable of producing an additional 20 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque to give the engine an extra boost on demand. Upgrading to the new S680 model will swap the base engine out with a twin-turbocharged 6.0L V-12 engine that bumps the figures to 621 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, offering similar performance as the outgoing S650 model, although the reduction in torque is mostly because of the 9-speed automatic transmission that is paired to both engine options. Both models also get an advanced all-wheel-drive system as standard.
With the new V-12 engine, the 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class sprints to 60 MPH in just 4.4 seconds, almost 0.3 seconds quicker than the base engine. Both engines are very refined and smooth with linear acceleration befitting an ultra-luxurious sedan. The U.S models are limited to just 130 MPH, but we doubt it'll be noticed when you're cocooned in luxury at the rear.

To move these luxury barges, all four models including can be optioned with massive 12-cylinder engines producing well over 500 hp. However, there are differences in the way they’re tuned. While the Bentley Flying Spur and BMW M760i concentrate more on performance and handling with all-wheel-drive and better power output, the Mercedes-Maybach S580 and Rolls-Royce Ghost focus on refinement over raw performance. As expected, the base Maybach S580 with the smallest engine is the slowest of the lot.
As expected with a large and opulent sedan that focuses on comfort above all else, the Maybach S-Class is far from a corner carver. However, it does remain composed even when pushed hard thanks to the adaptive air suspension setup. Both models also get rear-wheel steering to help the Maybach S-Class tackle urban conditions despite its limousine-like dimensions. With light and quick steering, the Maybach feels composed at highway speeds without a hint of nervousness. The rear-wheel steering also allows for easier maneuvering at lower speeds, requiring only small turns of the steering wheel.
Fortunately, all models also come with an advanced all-wheel-drive system with all-season tires to handle tricky situations all year round.
Like its performance, the brakes are very progressive with plenty of feedback. The EQ Boost system also includes some mild regenerative braking, which is barely noticeable in practice. Despite its heft, the Maybach S-Class stops on a dime if required and offers average braking performance for its class.

To compensate for their heavy curb weights, all manufacturers have provided massive braking hardware. Being the most performance-focused and lightest of the bunch, the BMW 760i is the best performer here despite the smallest hardware, followed by the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Bentley Flying Spur. The Maybach S580 takes the last spot albeit by a small margin.
One of the biggest advantages of having a smaller V-8 powertrain in a segment filled with V-12 options is in the fuel economy department. The base S580 returns almost 16 MPG in the city and over 24 MPG on the highway. The high figures are also helped by the EQ Boost system that provides torque-assist whenever required to boost efficiency. The system also recuperates energy when decelerating and includes automatic start-stop functionality to eke out a few extra miles.

Available with a smaller V-8 powertrain, the Mercedes-Maybach S580 is easily the most efficient option here by a considerable margin thanks to the EQ Boost system. With massive V-12 engines under the hood, the Bentley Flying Spur, BMW 7-Series, and Rolls-Royce Ghost guzzle gas in comparison.
With an elegant and luxurious cabin, the Maybach is in a class of its own, including all the modern features as standard. The regular S-Class was already one of the most comfortable options in the segment, and the Maybach model gets a 7-inch longer wheelbase for limousine-like rear-seat space and acres of legroom. The ever extensive feature list also includes all the modern features like power-adjustable seats with massaging, heating, and ventilation in both rows, a cabin air fragrance system, customizable ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, quad-zone climate control, and a lot more as standard.
Opting for the optional rear-seat plus package will include an extended center console for the rear passengers, foldable tables, and additional trim pieces. Customers can also opt for a refrigerator to keep the champagne cool and enjoy a drink while you sink into the rear seats and waft along in unmatched luxury, staring at the sky through the panoramic sunroof or watching their favorite shows through the rear-seat entertainment system. Unfortunately, all this technology and prioritizing rear-seat luxury has limited cargo capacity to just 12.5 cubic feet, which is further reduced with the optional refrigerator.

Being the biggest of the four, the Mercedes-Maybach S580 offers more passenger space than the rest. However, opting for the Rolls-Royce Ghost extended-wheelbase model will turn the tides. Both the Bentley Flying Spur and BMW M760i offer slightly less space in comparison. However, in terms of cargo space, both the Maybach S580 and Bentley Flying Spur are less practical compared to the rest.
Some notable interior features include:
The massive 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen infotainment system takes center stage running the latest MBUX interface. Mercedes also includes all the latest innovations and features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, built-in navigation with augmented reality, connected car features, several wireless charging pads, six USB-C ports, over-the-air updates, and more. Rear seat passengers also get a small tablet running the same interface to control the various functions and a rear-seat entertainment system with dual 11.6-inch displays that can be accessed through HDMI or Bluetooth. Navigation and other functions are also mirrored on the rear displays if required.
The driver also gets an advanced 12.3-inch instrument cluster with facial recognition and biometric authentication capable of storing multiple driver profiles to switch between them seamlessly. A 30-speaker Burmester 4D audio system is also included as standard along with active noise cancellation. Rear seat passengers also get wireless headphones for a more personal experience.
Some notable infotainment features include:
From a distance, the Maybach S-Class looks almost identical to the standard S-Class, with a similar design and shape. However, look closer and the longer design is evident, as are the distinctive Maybach badges. Models with the dual-tone paint option which costs a stiff premium of nearly $15000 stand out more, giving the Maybach its signature design. 20-inch alloy wheels are included as standard along with several chrome elements to add some bling.
While the 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class doesn't stand out as much as its rivals, it will certainly appeal to customers who want something that doesn't attract a lot of attention.

Even with the standard model, the Rolls-Royce Ghost is considerably heavier and larger than the Bentley Flying Spur and BMW 760i. However, the Mercedes-Maybach S580 offers the longest wheelbase, which translates to more interior space.
Some notable exterior features include:
Because of its exclusivity and eye-watering price-tag, the chances of a Mercedes-Maybach S-Class going through safety tests by the NHTSA or IIHS are slim. However, Mercedes has equipped the latest model with over 40 safety features from the factory, including several driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control with steering assist, active blind-spot monitoring, automatic speed takeover, remote parking assistant, driver drowsiness monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, surround-view camera system, and a lot more.
The Maybach also gets an array of 15 airbags including frontal airbags for rear passengers. The pre-safe system is even capable of inflating the side seat bolster to move the occupant away from the door when an impact is detected.
Some notable safety features include:
One of the oldest rivals to the modern Rolls-Royce, the Mercedes-Maybach S580 is the latest model to come out of the legendary Maybach brand. Based on the latest generation S-Class that launched last year, the Maybach also gets plenty of modern features including a huge infotainment display and a feature list that easily overshadows the Rolls-Royce Ghost. You also get a lot more for the money with the Maybach including more performance and interior space right from the base model. The S680 however, ups the ante with more than 600 hp on tap.
Overall, the Maybach appeals to the wallet, while the Ghost is for someone who prioritizes opulence and simplicity above all the modern technologies and features.
As expected from a Bentley, the Flying Spur manages to balance performance and luxury a lot better than the Maybach S-Class with a massive W-12 engine as standard and responsive handling. While the Maybach is made from the ground up for a luxurious rear-seat experience, the Flying Spur is more like a standard luxury saloon. However, this extra focus on luxury gives the Maybach S-Class an advantage in terms of smoothness, comfort, and refinement. However, the Bentley feels more premium with better quality materials and plenty of wood thrown in for the definitive British luxury experience. Both options also get all the latest features and technology as standard.
Overall, if you plan on getting behind the wheel once in a while, the Bentley Flying Spur is the better choice, while the Maybach S-Class is purely for the chauffeur-driven.
After a significant refresh last year, the latest Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is ready to take on the BMW 7-Series. As with most BMW models, the 7-Series is easily the most engaging option in its class with a direct steering and agile chassis. However, if we compare the prices between the two options, the 7-Series offers a lot more for the money including a massive V12 engine that easily outperforms all of its rivals.
However, as an ultra-luxury car, the 7-Series falls short when pitted against the Maybach S-Class despite sharing the same features and options. The elegant design of the Maybach feels more upmarket and more importantly, luxurious than the 7-Series which gets a sportier design theme. For the price, the BMW 7-Series is easily the better pick of the two, especially if you plan on driving yourself from time to time.
After more than 20 years in the market, Mercedes finally has a winner on their hands with the latest Maybach. Being based on the latest S-Class, it offers excellent dynamics and performance without compromising comfort. Unlike its competitors, the simple design of the Maybach allows it to blend in perfectly, allowing its owners to travel without attracting much attention. In terms of luxury, the Maybach S-Class easily matches and exceeds even the Rolls-Royce Ghost which costs almost twice as much. The real question is if the Maybach is worth the extra over the standard S-Class which is already a benchmark in itself. And, in all honestly, it is worth the premium, especially if you have a deep bank account and want a no-compromise luxury sedan that prioritizes luxury over style and bling.
Overall, if you're in the market for the latest and greatest ultra-luxury sedan, you can't go wrong with the 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class.
