Overall Rating
The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage is mostly unchanged from last year and is one sale for $15,290. It shares its specs with the Mirage G4 sedan and is powered by a 78 hp 1.2L inline-3 engine that does the 0-60 in 12.4 seconds. The feature-loaded interior and frugal engine complement the low price tag of the Mirage.
With an extensive update in 2021, the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage remains majorly unchanged apart from more standard features. The 2022 Mirage is on sale for $15,565 which includes the $995 destination charges for the base ES manual trim. It equips a 1.2-liter inline-3 engine that’s good for just 78 horsepower and does the 0-60 mph run in a sedate 12.4 seconds. Its sedan version, the Mitsubishi Mirage G4 features the same specs and comes at an MSRP of $16,830.Â
This year, the Carbonite edition has been replaced by Black Edition which gets unique cosmetic upgrades to make it look sportier. The 2022 Mirage is one of the cheapest cars on sale in the US and without any hybrid technology manages to return a maximum of 41 MPG on the highways. At such a low price tag, there aren't many competitors in the hatchback segment apart from the Chevrolet Spark and Kia Rio Hatchback after Nissan discontinued the Versa Note.Â
The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage’s main selling point is its price and practicality. Hence the LE trim makes more sense as it gets the additional alloy wheels and a couple of other features and yet keeps the price in check to not lose its affordability. Also, the CVT offers higher frugality that makes it easier on the pocket.

The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage trim has the value game on point with a lot to offer for its low selling price. The base ES trim is priced at $15,290 while the top of the line SE trim comes at an MSRP of $18,440. The 2022 Mirage lineup consists of four trim levels including the new Black Edition that replaces the Carbonite Edition from last year. The base ES trim comes with plenty of technology and safety features as standard making it the hot pick for many.
The Black Edition comes with a handful of exterior cosmetic upgrades, while the SE trim gets maximum creature comforts like larger wheels, heated front seats with leatherette upholstery, LED headlights, and a few more. On top of that, you also have access to some additional packages like the Convenience Value package, Protection value package, and Welcome package that carries a price of a shade under $300 which is quite a bargain.

"The Mirage accelerates very, very slowly and is nervous once up to highway speeds, with its narrow tires providing little confidence above about 55 mph."- The Car Connection.
Under the hood of the 2022 Mirage sits a 1.2-liter inline-3 MiVEC engine which is capable of churning out 78 horsepower and 74 lb-ft of torque. It is mated with either a 5-speed manual transmission on the base ES trim or a CVT automatic transmission that is standard across the lineup. Power is sent only to the front wheels as standard with AWD available. This powertrain remains identical even in the 2022 Mirage G4.
The underpowered engine of the 2022 Mirage makes driving it a task even in the city conditions, forget taking on the highway traffic. Though the manual gearbox makes it marginally easier to drive than the CVT, the latter returns better fuel efficiency figures while struggling to keep the car in the right gear. The ride and handling is equally disappointing as even the regular undulations tend to filter through and larger bumps tend to unsettle the ride.
There is a prominent body roll and the steering requires a bit of effort to get back to center after a turn. That being said, its compact dimensions make it nimble to maneuver in tight city lanes. The performance is painstakingly slow as it needs well over 12 seconds to reach 60 mph while the quarter-mile takes around 19 seconds. The top speed is limited at 105 MPH but the unsettled ride at high speeds will demotivate you from going anywhere close to that.

This is not the segment where you’d expect a lot of power or performance but the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage has the least powerful engine in the entire segment. Both the Chevrolet Spark and Kia Rio have better engine outputs that translate into better performance as well. The Chevy Spark is priced competitively and yet is over one and half seconds quicker to 60 mph. The Kia Rio demands a small premium over the Mirage but is also far more quick off the mark.
"Though it's light on power, the Mirage is remarkably efficient, achieving up to 36/43 mpg city/highway." - MotorTrend.
The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage doesn’t see any significant improvement in the fuel economy department. The Mitsubishi Mirage is a car that is built with gas mileage and price in mind. The car returns 41 MPG on the highways and 36 MPG combined. However, with the CVT transmission, the fuel economy rises to 35 MPG in the city and 43 MPG on the highway. However, its fuel tank capacity of 9.2-gallons does a decent job of offering around 330 miles of combined driving range.

The Chevrolet Spark stands at the bottom of the table with a combined efficiency of 33 MPG. Additionally, it also sports the smallest gas tank capacity of 9 gallons resulting in a dismal driving range. On the other hand, the Kia Rio has an equal fuel efficiency rating as the manual version of the Mitsubishi Mirage which occurs to be higher by 1 MPG, but its tank capacity of 11.9-gallons allows it to cover a combined range of over 400 miles, which is the highest in the segment.
"Although the design is rudimentary and there are lots of hard plastics in evidence, the car's interior is pleasant enough given its price range." - Car and Driver
The interior of the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage is not something we’d call spacious but the 2021 refresh has made the cabin look a lot more appealing than ever. The design is very basic and is mostly made of cheap plastics, but the fit & finish and build quality is pretty good as well. The seats are comfortable but aren't very supportive and while the base ES trim comes with fabric seats, the top tier SE trim gets a cloth and simulated leather combination seats.
The front row of seats is spacious to fit an average American rather comfortably, but the overall cabin space is rather confined. The rear seats aren’t nearly as comfortable and although can accommodate 2 adults it is best suited for kids. The trunk capacity of 17.1 cu-ft available as standard is pretty useful and much larger than the 12.1 cu-ft offered in the Mirage G4. The rear seats can be folded down to open up a maximum of 47 cu-ft of cargo space.

In terms of seating capacity, each hatchback is evenly matched and can accommodate five passengers. Even the space of the cabin is incomparable. The only difference arises in terms of cargo capacity, where the Chevrolet Spark does lack considerably that's smaller by 6 cu-ft. All three hatchbacks have similar passenger space for both the front and rear seats. The biggest strength of the 2022 Mirage is its feature-loaded touchscreen infotainment system.Â
With no changes to the infotainment system, you still get a 7-inch intuitive screen with some modern features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which usually don't come in basic cars. Paired up with a 4 speaker audio system, the sound quality is decent indeed but can be upgraded to a $595 Rockford Fosgate Premium audio system that does a far better job. There's nothing fancy on offer, but it covers all the basic aspects sufficiently well.Â
"The 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage has style. It’s simple, but the design has personality, and it looks cheerful in the bright yellow paint."- Autotrader
With the 2021 redesign, the exterior of the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage looks like a perfect hatchback with its compact dimensions that aid maneuverability. The design feels contemporary and looks on par with the competition. With sharp headlights and a stylish front grille, it never fails to dazzle you. From the rear, it looks adorable and gets a sleek taillight design integrated with LED lights. As for the colors, the Mitsubishi offers some conspicuous shades with 8 different color options to choose from.
The lower variants get a basic halogen headlight setup which is upgraded to an LED setup on the higher trims. The base ES trim sports 14-inch steel wheels, whereas the mid-LE trim gets upgraded to 14-inch alloy wheels. However, the top-of-the-line SE trim flaunts nicely finished 15-inch alloy wheels. The Black Edition trim, on the other hand, adds a sporty exterior body kit to even more enhance the design of the car.

In comparison, the Mirage is bigger than the Chevrolet Spark but smaller than the Kia Rio, which is the longest and widest option here. The Mitsubishi, however, is the tallest option and is the lightest one here, but its shorter wheelbase cramps space at the rear. The Spark has the best-in-class ground clearance to offer which is marginally higher than the Mirage. The Rio hatchback rides much lower by more than an inch when compared to the Spark.
The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage Hatchback has not been rated yet by the IIHS. The 2021 model earned a 4-star overall rating from the NHTSA with a roll-over risk of 16.40%. The 2021 Mirage got an overall 'Good' rating from the IIHS with a marginal rating only on the Small overlap front driver-side test. This sums how well built the 2022 Mitsubishi despite being one of the most affordable cars on sale at the moment.
With a Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution Body construction, the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage boasts a robust body structure that proves its crashworthiness. Not only does it offer a good build quality but also offers a handful suite of modern safety features working actively to make sure the passengers are safe. It is one of the most safety features loaded hatchbacks in this segment and a highlight of the most prominent safety features has been listed below.
2022 Mitsubishi Mirage vs 2022 Chevrolet Spark
The Chevrolet Spark is another long-running model in the compact hatchback segment. With more power at your disposal, it is quicker than the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage off the line. That said, the Chevrolet Spark gets a bigger engine which makes it even more smooth at high speed. That also makes it less efficient than the Mirage, but it also has a smaller trunk. Which makes the 2022 Mirage a more practical choice.
2022 Mitsubishi Mirage vs 2022 Kia Rio Hatchback
The Kia Rio Hatchback is better than the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage in every way possible. Starting from the performance to the cabin space, everything is a little extra in the Kia Rio hatchback. However, the Mitsubishi Mirage is unbeatable in terms of frugality, especially with the CVT transmission on board and the price as well. Also, the Mitsubishi Mirage is more affordable than in terms of price, making it the preferred choice.
Though the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage is not the quickest, this hatchback is the most frugal option in the segment, which makes it worth the money one decides to spend on it. The interior of the Mitsubishi Mirage feels adequately appointed with several standard features but the quality of the interior could have been better. However, considering the price it demands, it is admissible and makes for a perfect affordable hatchback.
