Overall Rating
Although one can argue that Mitsubishi has fallen down the lot from its heyday, the company still tries to bring great products.
Although one can argue that Mitsubishi has fallen down the lot from its heyday, the company still tries to bring great products. The 2022 model year sees the redesign of one of the best platforms we have seen from the brand. We are talking about nothing else other than the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV that has been completely redesigned for the model year. It sees improvements in several areas and becomes hard to miss in the small SUV category.
Since there are five trim levels, there is indeed a lot of confusion. Our pick out of the lot would be the SEL trim simply due to its value for money aspect. It brings you nearly all the features that you can get in this car but without some of the high-end features that make the highest trim level very expensive. At $31,945, the front-wheel-drive model of this particular trim level is only about $6000 higher than the base trim level and is very well appointed for that money. It gets you a 12.3 inch digital instrument panel, tri zone automatic climate control, driver seat memory settings, heated rear seats, leather upholstery ambient lighting and so on.

With the Outlander, Mitsubishi plans to give customers a lot of choice and that can be seen from the trim line up. For the 2022 model year, this crossover is offered in five trim levels that cover a very wide price range. It starts with the ES trim at about $25,795 and goes all the way up to the SEL Launch Edition at $35,345. In this wide range, even the base trim is well loaded with 18 inch wheels, a lady headlights, pushbutton start, dual zone automatic climate control, 8 inch touchscreen, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay integration. However, when you reach the highest trim level you get features such as panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, upgraded leather upholstery, 10 speaker Bose audio system, head up display and so on.

In terms of the release date, there has not been much information from the part of Mitsubishi. Since it is a brand-new model year, the company has released a lot of details about the car and also revealed specifications. However, several part shortages in the automotive sector have slowdown deliveries. Deliveries are also expected to start soon afterwards, that is by January or February 2022. The manufacturer has unveiled all of its cars and also provided press cars for the tests. However, in the absence of a clear confirmation as to when deliveries are about to start, one can only hope for cars by the end of this year. We can definitely understand the reason for these delays and till then, we can only hope for the cars to arrive as soon as possible.
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander comes with a 2.5 L turbocharged in-line four-cylinder engine that produces 181 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. These figures are a bit low for this category but only by a very marginal amount. In terms of real life performance, the engine feels uncharacterful and rather dry. The transmission by default is a CVT automatic transmission that is quite reliable but is dull when driving. The powertrain is front-wheel-drive by default but all-wheel-drive is an option in all trim levels. Overall, it is not the most exciting powertrain around but it is definitely decent and can definitely do all that is expected from it.
Speaking about outright acceleration, the crossover SUV does poorly with 0 to 60 mph time being as low as 9.5 seconds. The handling is definitely decent, although it is not too sporty are capable. Ride quality is very good and is definitely one of the biggest plus points of this car. The steering is also nice and gives the driver adequate feedback. The car remains composed even when cornering and although it is not as capable as some of its rivals, it is definitely decent.

Once you look at the price charts, one can definitely figure out that Mitsubishi has worked the lot to bring the price under what its competitors are priced at. This is because the competition is huge and the manufacturer has to do this to build the market share. When you compare the performance of these cars, the Outlander falls a bit backward because of its lackluster engine and acceleration figures. The most capable performer out of this bunch would be the Mazda CX-5 which has good power figures as well as excellent handling. The Toyota RAV4 is the most powerful SUV in this bunch.
The current redesign has also improved another thing - fuel efficiency. We definitely feel that although it is not as great as some of its rivals, the fuel efficiency figures of this car are definitely noteworthy. Averaging about 27 MPG in the combined cycle, it should provide users with excellent cost-effectiveness. The all-wheel-drive variant drops fuel efficiency only by 1 MPG across the board. And hence it is a very frugal alternative as well. The fuel tank capacity is also quite excellent at 14.5 gallons which gives it decent range figures. The city range can be as high as 348 miles which is quite more than necessary while on the highway, it can get up to 450 miles.

Like we have mentioned, fuel efficiency is definitely a strong point of the Outlander but its competitors do outperform it. Considering that it is the slowest car of this bunch, it can definitely have space for improvement but the Mazda CX-5 is slightly worse in terms of fuel efficiency. It makes do with a larger fuel tank and hence compensates in terms of overall range. The category leader would definitely be the Toyota RAV4 which has excellent fuel efficiency as well as a decently sized fuel tank. This gives it class leading range figures. The Honda CR-V manages to strike a good balance between fuel efficiency numbers and fuel tank capacity.
The interior of the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander has been thoroughly redesigned and is a very well comes a price. It is fun to look at unlike many of the cars in this category that has modernized while losing their character. The seats offer you excellent support as well as a wide range of adjustment. This means that users of very different body types can feel equally at home inside the car. Ingress and egress are also very easy to do large-size doors and low step over height.
The switchgear is made of very high-quality materials and it is very easy to use it due to the ergonomics of the cabin. However, access to the third row is a little tough and the space that might only be adequate for kids or adults with a small frame. The visibility outside the cabin is also very nice and the space offered is plenty. The design of the interior is minimalistic and the material quality is also a good. There is a right amount of convenience features that make the car a breeze to use.

The Mitsubishi has a definite advantage in terms of the interiors because it offers space for seven occupants whereas all of its rivals offer space for only five occupants. And despite this, it offers an excellent cargo capacity of 11.7 ft.³. When the seats are folded, this increases to 33.5 ft.³. However, its rivals do manage to return you very similar figures in this department. There are plenty of storage compartments. All the Japanese cars offer you decent material quality as well as need interior layouts as well. Let’s see some of the interior highlights
Mitsubishi has provided a decently entertaining infotainment features. There is an 8 inch touchscreen infotainment system that gets Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard features. There is also a 9 inch infotainment system as well as a 12.3 inch driver information display. The system has graphics that are crisp and vibrant and it is also very intuitive. The voice commanding system might be a little tricky to use and most users will not really adapt well to it. There is a Bose premium audio system which makes the audio very immersive. Some of the standard features of the infotainment system are:
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is a new design and hence will take a little bit of time to get used to. Although it is quite modern, it looks like what we expect to see from the Japanese crossover SUVs these days. It however has stately colors and the design that gives it a lot of road presence. However, there are very nice design details in certain areas of the car that make it look very nice. There is a restraint throughout the design and that is a good thing considering many cars do not have it.

The Mitsubishi Outlander is the heaviest car in the segment but also the biggest. By dimensions, the Mitsubishi is the widest, heaviest, tallest and longest vehicle in the group. But we can definitely see that this went into making space for a third row that none of its competitors have. It also has the best ground clearance in this category which makes it quite capable off the road. The longer the base also ensures of the car remains stable under most circumstances.
Some of the exterior highlights include:
Because the 2022 with the Mitsubishi Outlander is a completely brand-new model, it has not been tested by all safety agencies yet. We cannot use results from previous model years as this chassis brand-new. This means that we do not have an NHTSA meeting to comment yet. However, the IIHS has tested it and it came with great results. The IIHS has named it a Top Safety Pick+ which is the highest honor from the agency. With its long list of driver assists and features, the car poses as the very safe crossover SUV that families can use without a worry. There are several safety features like forward collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist available as standard. Some standard safety features include:
The Mazda CX-5 might be a very similar car but it is also a little better as a car in many aspects. Although the Outlander has several advantages in terms of practicality, the Mazda is a much more entertaining car if you love driving. It is also much better in terms of performance. In terms of interiors, the Mitsubishi definitely scores a lot of points with its excellent layout as well as material quality. Also, considering the generous warranty terms that Mitsubishi is offering these days, we should assume that the car is quite reliable as well.
The Honda CR-V is a no-brainer in the segment because it has always consistent at the top of this category. It provides an excellent package that is ticking nearly all the boxes that buyers of the segment expect it to. It gives you decent performance, excellent fuel efficiency, good interiors with nice amount of features and so on. It sets the category benchmark in several aspects and is a very good car but the Mitsubishi definitely has enough to raise a candle towards it.
The Toyota RAV4 is arguably one of the first crossover SUVs ever. It has innovated over the years to stay relevant this category and brought out a lot of updates. As a result of this, it is still a very modern and desirable car with a lot of strengths. However, it is a little more expensive than the Mitsubishi. For this difference however, it offers you better fuel efficiency. However, it does not have a third row like the Outlander and hence scores a little less in terms of practicality.
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is a small three row crossover SUV that definitely tries to fill a void in the market. It is offered at a slightly more reasonable price when compared to its rivals and offers a similar amount of equipment as well as performance. It definitely is not the most engaging car to drive but as well-mannered and offers excellent ride quality. We would definitely recommend the buyer who is on the lookout for a good family SUV buy the Mitsubishi Outlander. The 2022 update does bring in a lot of changes that will appeal to a large section of the population.
