About 2022 Nissan Maxima

3.9

Overall Rating

The 2022 Nissan Maxima carries on without any changes for 2022. Priced at $38,0000 with a powerful 3.5L V6 engine and CVT, the Maxima offers a quick 0-60 mph time and sporty handling. On the inside, this sedan appeals to the crowd with its luxury roots, usable interior, and a ton of practical tech. A stylish exterior and a long list of safety tech make the Maxima a value-for-money car in this segment.

The 2022 Nissan Maxima is a full-size sedan with a sports pedigree highlighted by a 300-horsepower V6 engine and front-wheel-drive. With no major changes to the 2022 Maxima, Nissan offers ample standard safety features and plenty of desirable features inside. The Maxima lineup comes in three trim levels: SV, SR, and Platinum. Now on sale across the nation, the prices for the 2022 Maxima sedan start from $37,240 for the base SV trim and goes up to $42,550 for the Platinum trim.

The Maxima promises a quick 0-60 mph acceleration time of 5.7 sec, with a handling that's sharper than most rivals in this segment. For a family of four, there is plenty of room but its back seat is small. Inside, desirable features include an 8-touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Nissan Maxima competes with rivals including Dodge Charger, Honda Accord, and the Toyota Avalon.

We recommend the mid-level 2022 Nissan Maxima SR trim. Priced at $43,000, it comes packed with the 3.5L V6 and the CVT, and builds on the SV trim with some necessary features on the inside and outside. These include foglights, sunroof, ventilated front seats, paddle shifters, an 11-speaker Bose audio system, lane-keeping assist, and a surround-view camera system with front and rear parking sensors. The stiffer suspension does improve the handing as well.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

"The Maxima SR offers the most sporting features." - The Car Connection

The 2022 Nissan Maxima is available in three trim options, namely SV, SR, and Platinum. Pricing for these trims will increase slightly, starting from $38,000 for the base and up to $44,500 for the top trim. All trims come equipped with standard fitment that includes the NissanConnect infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen,  heated front seats, leather upholstery, push-button start, and dual-zone climate control. There are a ton of standard advanced safety features on offer as well.

All trims come with the 3.5L V6 engine as standard with a CVT transmission and is available in front-wheel drive only. There are no optional packages on offer. Higher trims add more creature comforts and flair to the interiors. The SR adds a heated steering wheel, Alcantara leather upholstery, and a sport-tuned suspension system. The Platinum builds on the above with a rear window sunshade, premium leather upholstery, and automatic wipers.

Buying Advice

We recommend the mid-level 2022 Nissan Maxima SR trim. Priced at $43,000, it comes packed with the 3.5L V6 and the CVT, and builds on the SV trim with some necessary features on the inside and outside. These include foglights, sunroof, ventilated front seats, paddle shifters, an 11-speaker Bose audio system, lane-keeping assist, and a surround-view camera system with front and rear parking sensors. The stiffer suspension does improve the handing as well.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

"The Maxima is one of the quicker fulsize sedans, and its V-6 engine sounds good when it's pushed hard." - Car and Driver

The standard 3.5 L naturally aspirated V6 engine produces 300 hp and 261 lb-ft of torque is an impressive motor. This is coupled with a CVT automatic to drive the front wheels. The engine is powerful, and refined at the same time. The CVT gearbox shifts quick and precise, and power delivery is linear without any hiccups. However, the car feels heavy at lower speeds, and gets quite agile as the speed rises.

Despite this engine being the same one seen on the Z-silbings, its the CVT that makes all the difference. The CVT is actually tuned for optimal power and mileage delivery, and the Maxima keeps up on that front. The SR trim comes wth paddle shifters that does improve the feel slightly. There is no optional engine or an optional gearbox. The Nissan Maxima's acceleration figures are decent, taking 5.7 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill.

This is quite quick for a sedan of this size, and should be adequate for almost all buyers. The Maxima is a friendly and an easy car to drive. It handles on point, with the main focus being the smooth ride quality thanks to the supple suspension setup. The SR trim does come with a stiffer setup for more engaging driving, but the difference is not very impressive for a $40,000+ price tag. The steering is on pint, with decent feedback as well.

The Maxima does demand some extra cost against its rivals. The Accord has the most torque output, and peak torque also kicks in early at just 1,500 RPM. Except for the Honda Accord, all the rivals have similarly powerful engines. The Dodge Charger is the only one that offers a rear-wheel-drive configuration. The 0-60 mph times are very evenly matched among the rivals. Even with its 300 hp engine, the Charger loses to its heavyweight. The Honda Accord is what we recommend due to its refined motor and a lower price tag.

"It's on the low end of average, for its size." - The Car Connection

With the 300 hp 3.5L V6 and the CVT with front-wheel-drive, the 2022 Nissan Maxima should see similar figures as on the 2021 model. EPA estimates return a city mileage of 20 MPG, with a highway mileage of 30 MPG, and 25 MPG combined with the 3.5L V6 and CVT. This economy with its 15 gallons tank capacity converts into a range of 360 city miles, 540 highway miles, and 432 miles combined.

The trade-off between performance and fuel efficiency can be made out from the above table. The Accord is the most efficient car thanks to its smaller inline-4 engine and a more accurate gearbox. This converts into a combined mileage of 33 MPG, which is more than what most cars of this segment offer. The Avalon is similar to the Maxima in its approach towards performance and efficiency, but it's the Charger that surprises us with its combined mileage of 23 MPG.

Interior
7.0/10

"The Maxima's interior looks great, the controls are easy to use, and the infotainment system's structure is logical." - Edmunds

The 2022 Nissan Maxima offers a comfortable ride due to its impeccable stability and exquisite upholstery. The interiors of the new Maxima will have no significant update and are expected to deliver equally, if not better. The Maxima is more of an entry-level luxury midsize sedan. The interiors are well laid out, use top-quality materials, and have functions that are simple to use. The technology offered is updated and space is also generous.

The Maxima can seat up to 5 passengers. The front seats are spacious in terms of headroom and legroom, but the car's exterior styling hampers the available space in the rear. Leather upholstery is standard, and the seats offer great support and are well-bolstered for long drives. In terms of visibility and ingress and egress both, the rear does demand an effort and can get tight. Features such as power-adjustable seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and shift knob, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a push-button start do help with the overall ambiance.

One would find themselves asking for more space only in the rear of the Maxima. Apart from this all other areas are pretty well endowed in terms of space. The Accord packs in a volumous rear, with excellent headroom and legroom. The Nissan falls behind almost all of its rivals in terms of cargo capacity, whereas the Charger offers the most. Infotainment features include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that sits in the center of the dashboard. It has touchscreen controlled as well as buttons for audio volume and climate control.

The base Maxima SV features  Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an eight-speaker stereo, satellite radio, navigation, voice recognition, Bluetooth, two front USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Moving on to higher trim levels, Maxima has options including an 11-speaker Bose premium audio system and two rear USB ports. Some interior features offered on the Maxima are:

  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Heated front seats
  • Driver-seat memory functions
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Paddle shifters
  • 11-speaker Bose audio system
  • 8-inch touchscreen infotainment
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

"Nissan renders the Maxima in sleek style." -The Car Connection

Maxima's exterior styling is aggressive and modern, but a bit dated. The car retains the signature styling, with the V-grille in the front flanked by the long and sharp LED headlights. The front and rear bumpers have very muscular styling. Sharp lines and creases exist all around the car, which adds a very sporty design language. Along the side, the Maxima's flowing lines are made more prominent with the blacked-out pillars and large wheels.

The SV trim sits on 18-inch alloy wheels, whereas the other two trims use 19-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, the sharp inverted C-shaped taillights with the quad exhaust setup give the Maxima a luxury midsize sedan look. In terms of dimensions, all Maxima models are about 192 inches long while their curb weight ranges from 3,612 to 3,736 pounds depending on the trim you choose with a wheelbase of 109.3 inches.

The Charger is the heaviest of the lot, around 300 lbs more than the Maxima. The Accord is the lightest of them, at 3,131 lbs. The wheelbase on the Nissan is on the shorter side but due to the length of the overhangs, it represents dimensions that are similar to the Accord. Even though the Charger can be considered the largest full-size sedan of the lot, all the cars are pretty similar in terms of size. Some exterior features are:

  • LED headlights
  • Sunroof
  • Foglights
  • Sport-tuned suspension
  • Automatic wipers
  • LED taillights
  • Quad-exhaust setup
  • 18-inch/19-inch alloy wheels

Safety
9.9/10

The 2022 Maxima has not been rated yet, but as there are no changes we expect the 2021 model's rating to apply for this year as well. The NHTSA awarded it 5-stars overall, whereas the IIHS rated it 'Good' in most safety tests expect the headlamps which are rated at 'Acceptable'. Even then, it bagged the 'Top Safety Pick+' award from IIHS.

Apart from these ratings, the Maxima also comes equipped with a ton of active and passive advanced safety systems throughout the trim levels, with its Nissan Intelligent Mobility and Nissan Safety Shield 360 systems. The 2022 Nissan Maxima is based on the Nissan D platform made for front wheel drive vehicles. Some stand-out safety features offered include:

  • Standard Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Standard Pedestrian Detection
  • Standard Forward Collision Warning
  • Available Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Blind Spot Warning
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert

2022 Nissan Maxima vs 2022 Honda Accord

Both the Accord and the Maxima are well-equipped with their long list of safety features, a lot of standard interior creature comforts, refined CVT transmission, and a spacious interior with large cargo capacities. The Honda Accord however is the better sports car than the Maxima with a more engaging drive. The Altima is cheaper and performs well all around. However, despite the higher pricing, the Accord is the clear choice thanks to its excellent resale value, strong reliability, and the choice for the engine.

2022 Nissan Maxima vs 2022 Toyota Avalon

The Avalon gets a slight refresh for 2022. The Avalon is much closer to the Maxima's vibe than the Accord, with the standard V6 engines, spacious interiors, good reliability, and the affordable price tag. The Avalon like other Toyotas comes with a strong resale value and available AWD. The Maxima is a looker, and it handles better than the Avalon. Between these two, we choose the Avalon for its better interior room, optional AWD, and guaranteed resale value.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Nissan Maxima marks the last model year of the 8th generation of this car. A strong rumor hints at the Maxima going all-electric from 2023, which makes this the last ICE-powered Maxima model to be on sale. The Maxima is a midsize family sedan, and it is well-equipped at that front. Sporty handling, decent performance, and the premium interior make a strong case for the Maxima. However, rivals offer a better proposition in terms of interior space and tech. At $38,000, though there are other options, the Maxima has the right blend of luxury and sportiness, and something that we do recommend even if it's not the best.
