Overall Rating
Said to get a key refresh for 2023, the 2022 Subaru Ascent carries over unchanged from its predecessor. A new "Onyx Edition" is new for 2022 though but it's mostly an appearance package based on the 7-seat capacity Ascent Premium. Available in 5 configurations, the 2022 Subaru Ascent is available for sale at an MSRP of $33,420 and has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 lbs. The interior does not get any changes either and continues with the same specs as before.
Apart from an all-new Onyx Edition, the 2022 Subaru Ascent gets no change over its outgoing 2021 model. However, the flagship Subaru SUV is reported to get a significant refresh for its 2023 model year. The new Onyx Edition this year is mainly an appearance package that is based on the seven-seat Premium model. Apart from blacked-out exterior accents and 20-inch wheels, the Onyx also gets some premium standard features.

The 2022 Ascent has been released and is available across all dealerships in 4 different configurations at an MSRP of $33,420 which includes the $1,125 destination charge.Â
What also remains the same is its intense rivalry with the likes of Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and Kia Telluride.Â

Like the smaller Forester, it's notable for its respectable list of standard and optional driver aids, a slick infotainment system, and an interior that feels a bit more premium than those in some rivals. - Edmunds

The new 2022 Subaru Ascent Onyx Edition is the one that feels best suited for a family at $39,120.

All these add value to the SUV and also add to its practicality.
The Ascent’s soft ride is refreshingly family-friendly versus top competitors whether buyers opt for 18- or 20-inch wheels. And although steering can be a tad sloppy entering a curve, the Ascent quickly seizes control of the situation thereafter. - Cars.com
Under the hood of the 2022 Subaru Ascent sits the same old 2.4-liter liter turbocharged Flat-4 engine. Paired with a CVT transmission that sends power to all four wheels as standard, the engine makes 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. This is the sole powertrain available with the Ascent lineup with no other option to pick from.
The Ascent's turbo pot may be the least powerful in its segment, but on the move, it feels robust and capable. Power comes in quickly down the lower range with a quick and steady surge through the mid ranges. The CVT is obedient in its act but being a CVT it does make the engine seem stressed during quick highway passings.
Despite its size and footprint, the 2022 Subaru Ascent has a decent performance to offer and clocks from 0-60 MPH in 6.9 seconds. It is also capable of doing the quarter-mile in 15.5 seconds and has a respectable top speed of 130 MPH. The towing capacity is rated at 2,000 lbs as standard and maxes out at 5,000 lbs.

The Toyota Highlander has the most powerful powertrain here but it is the Honda Pilot that is the quickest of the lot. While the Kia Telluride has less power under its hood, it is almost as quick and capable as the 2022 Ascent.
On the other hand, the Pilot loses its base trim which makes it a very expensive option in this segment. The Subaru Ascent instead offers a lot more value as it has the lowest starting price.
Subaru’s three-row impresses with its torquey turbocharged engine, smooth ride quality, and ample standard safety tech. Good fuel economy and strong safety ratings only sweeten the deal. - MotorTrend
Since the engine remains the same, the MPG figures on offer with the 2022 Subaru Ascent also continue to remain the same. The 2022 Ascent still offers a healthy 21 MPG in the city, 27 on the highway, and a 23 MPG combined fuel economy. It is complemented by a large 19.3-gallon fuel tank which offers an impressive range over well over 500 miles on the highway.

Interestingly, the other three rivals here are as economical as the Subaru here. Even in terms of overall driving range, all the four SUVs here have a small margin of difference. That said, the Toyota Highlander is the most frugal of the lot.
This three-row vehicle also has user-friendly infotainment controls, adult-friendly seating, and one of the largest cargo capacities in the class. -Â cars.usnews.com
The interior of the 2022 Subaru Ascent doesn't see any major change except for some extra black inserts and unique badging in the Onyx Edition trim. On the inside, the SUV receives a two-tone gray color scheme with the water-repellent StarTex material. The Ascent also gets ample cabin space and can seat 8 or 7 people without feeling cramped.
It gets cloth upholstery in the lower trims, which gets upgraded to leather in the Limited and Touring trims. The front seats are wide and supportive with thick padding and offer optimal support on longer journeys. The second row is as comfortable as the front chairs, especially with the available captain chairs. That said, there is only a black color interior available on offer as standard with 2 color options being available on higher trims.Â
Thankfully, with a generous 17.8 cu-ft of cargo area, the Ascent equates things fairly well. While that isn't the most spacious for the segment, folding down the third row of seats increases the cargo capacity to 47.5 cu-ft which extends to a maximum of 86.5 cu-ft by folding the second row as well.Â

As evident from the table, the Kia Telluride is the most spacious ride with the biggest cargo space to its name. The Subaru Ascent is not far behind as it offers an equally sized cabin and boot space. The Toyota Highlander offers the most space in the front two rows, and cramps up the third row. Thankfully, the Kia Telluride maximizes passenger room and that too without sacrificing its cargo area.
For infotainment, the 2022 Subaru Ascent will offer the 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system across all trim levels except the Base.
The Base trim gets the smaller 6.5-inch touchscreen as standard. Both the infotainment systems are quite intuitive and feature-packed to suffice for the price that the ride demands. Connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are provided as standard along with Bluetooth. The Limited and Touring models also get a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot while the latter also enjoys 14-speaker Harman-Kardon premium audio.
The Subaru Ascent looks like a Subaru. It kind of looks like the Outback, but in the form of a more conventional midsize 3-row crossover, and we think that’s a good thing. It sits pretty up high with 8.7 inches of ground clearance. That translates to good off-road capabilities without being so tall that it’s hard to climb in and out of. - Kelley Blue Book
As is the case with its other aspects, the 2022 Subaru Ascent gets no design changes. However, a refreshed Subaru Ascent may turn up in 2023. For now, the 2022 Ascent strikes well with its imposing stance. Courtesy of its tall hood, large and wide front-grille, and LED headlamps. Despite its aggressive fascia, the Ascent looks rather familiar to its smaller sibling, the Subaru Outback, which is certainly not a bad thing.
For 2022, the only change to the Ascent exterior is the new Onyx Edition. It is an appearance package based on the seven-seat Premium trim and includes unique black-out exterior elements and 20-inch rims. It also comes standard with a hands-free power liftgate, a heated steering wheel, passive entry with push-button start, and rear automated emergency braking. There are 18-inch alloy wheels offered as standard and can be had in 4 different color options.

The higher ground clearance along with standard roof rails make it look sporty and rugged at the same time. Compared to its rivals, the 2022 Ascent does not look particularly striking like the 2022 Telluride but it offers the best ride height which aids in tackling rougher terrains. The Honda Pilot on the other hand has a very conventional design and is more focused for city commuting.
If you love to drive hard and fast on varying road surfaces, it means access to a street-legal turbocharged rally car. And if you're a parent, models like the 2022 Subaru Ascent provide the safety, security, and utility you seek in a family-oriented vehicle. - J.D Power
Keeping safety as a top priority, the 2022 Subaru Ascent comes standard with Subaru's award-winning EyeSight Driver Assist Technology which features Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering. Built on the Subaru Global Architecture (SGA), the 2022 Subaru Ascent utilizes a high-strength steel frame with aluminum reinforcements in dedicated crumple zones. All Ascent models also come equipped with Steering Responsive LED headlights with High Beam Assist for improved nighttime visibility.
When it boils down to safety ratings in crash tests, the Subaru Ascent surely does not disappoint. Since the 2022 Ascent remains a carryover from its outgoing 2021 model, its previous yeart's ratings aptly suffice. The 2021 Ascent carries a perfect 5-star rating from the NHTSA and an overall "Good" rating from the IIHS. Furthermore, it was the 2021 Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS, which bolsters its stance as a sturdy family car.
Key Safety Features:
2022 Subaru Ascent vs 2022 Toyota Highlander
While the Toyota Highlander does carry a slightly higher starting MSRP than the Ascent, it does feel more upscale and comfortable on the inside. The Highlander is also more powerful among the two Japs here, is more spacious in the first and second rows apart from carrying a more premium presence. While both the machines here are similar in terms of efficiency and features, the Ascent is more robust, capable and also offers better driving dynamics than the Toyota here, making it the preferred choice here.
2022 Subaru Ascent vs 2022 Kia Telluride
Compared to the Ascent, the Kia Telluride looks more imposing, mature, and far more premium. The Kia is also more spacious and practical alongside being more premium and comfortable on the inside. With Telluride, you also get access to more upscale features and overall presentation. The Subaru Ascent on the other hand is raw to its core and is also more capable than the Kia here. With only a slight difference in prices, the 2022 Telluride surely makes for a better choice.
2022 Subaru Ascent vs 2022 Honda Pilot
Pitched against the Subaru Ascent, the Honda Pilot is more refined, energetic, and significantly quicker. Along with a premium and upscale exterior and interior design, the Honda is also one of the most fun-to-drive cars in its segment. Not to forget its plush and hushed ride though. However, the Subaru Ascent aces ahead with its off-road skills and rugged character along with a bit more space and practicality on the inside, making it the one to go for here.
The 2022 Subaru Ascent builds on the premise of its predecessors and continues on its streak of being a family car with an off-roading side. With bundles of features, respectable specs, and a comfortable and spacious interior, along with a raw intent, the Ascent seamlessly checks most of the desired boxes. However, for buyers who prefer a bit more energy and refinement and are not frequent country visitors, its rivals score better in that regard.
