With a complete makeover, the 2022 Subaru BRZ enters its second generation. Built on a stiffer platform, the 2022 BRZ gets all-new interior and exterior designs. Most importantly, it gets a new and more powerful 2.4-liter engine which with its lower center of gravity makes it much more athletic and enjoyable than before. Available for sale at a price of $28,990, it offers both manual and automatic transmissions in two trim configurations.
The much awaited 2022 Subaru BRZ is finally released in the States now with a thorough redesign for its second generation. The new BRZ gets an all-new design both on the inside and outside and is longer and lower than its outgoing 2021 model. Most importantly, it gets a new and more powerful 2.4-liter Flat-4 engine replacing the older 2.0-liter Flat-4
The interior layout remains unchanged with 2+2 things but the cabin now gets a complete overhaul with more modern tech and upmarket appeal. The new BRZ or the Scion FRS successor now starts at an MSRP of $28,990 and is available for sale in just two configurations with both a manual and automatic transmission.
The BRZ goes up against some popular names like the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the new Toyota GR 86.
We’d suggest picking up the Subaru BRZ Limited with the manual gearbox.
At an MSRP of $31,590, the Limited brings you more premium amenities like simulated leather upholstery, driver assistance features, larger wheels, and more. The 6-speed manual gearbox simply amplifies the driving fun of this enthusiastic machine.

"Just about every Subaru these days is an all-wheel-drive SUV, but not the Subaru BRZ. This is the company's low-slung, rear-wheel-drive sport coupe co-developed with Toyota, and now it has a fresh lease on life for 2022 thanks to a full redesign." - Edmunds
Despite a thorough second-gen update, the 2022 BRZ retains its core credentials. The affordable two-door four-seat sports car is still available in two trim levels. Available with a 2.4-liter Flat-4 engine, the 2022 BRZ continues to be the only Subaru on sale that doesn't get Subaru's famed Symmetrical AWD. However, unlike the outgoing generations Limited and TS models, the 2022 BRZ gets a new "Premium" trim which slots below the limited trim.
MSRP for the 2022 BRZ Premium starts at $28,990 while the Limited kicks in at $31,590. Both the trims come with a standard 6-speed manual transmission while a $1600 six-speed automatic is also available with either of the configurations. In terms of features, the Limited gets more upscale ornamentation like more driver aids, a better audio system, and simulated leather upholstery.

However, for 2022, you do get a limited-slip differential as standard even in the base model. Subaru does not offer any optional packages with the new BRZ 2022 but there are plenty of accessories on offer.

Under the hood of the 2022 Subaru BRZ, is an all-new upgraded 2.4L Boxer-4 engine which uses Toyota’s D-4S direct fuel injection and port injection system for improved throttle response over its predecessor, and as a result, it puts out a healthy 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque which is 28 more horsepower than the outgoing version. Along with the added power, 2022 gets improved driving dynamics, courtesy of a series of small changes that add up to a significantly better overall experience.
For starters the new 2022 Subaru BRZ with its updated chassis boasts a lower center of gravity, and combined with the limited-slip differential and Michelin Pilot Sport tires that are part of the standard kit, it feels a lot more eager when changing directions. The new BRZ also gets a significantly better transmission setup. Talking about the party piece, i.e the 6-speed stick shift, the ratios are well matched and the gates between each gear are extremely slick which makes flying between gears a breeze.
Even the 6-speed auto gets plenty of good stuff such as paddle shifters and downshift blipping control along with dedicated snow and sand mode which are absent in the manual version. Overall, the updates add up to provide a notably better experience. Also, the 0-60 MPH is achieved in 5.4 seconds which is almost a second quicker than the previous iteration's timing of 6.3 seconds.

The corporate twin to the BRZ, the Toyota GR 86 coupe is mechanically identical to it and is priced similarly as well. That said, it is not as quick as the Subaru but both have the same 140 MPH top speed. The MX-5 Miata is slightly cheaper but it too is marginally slower than the 2022 BRZ.
The 2022 Subaru BRZ gets a bigger and more powerful Boxer-4 engine as part of the update which should translate to worse fuel economy, however with its Toyota derived D4-S fueling system which utilizes direct as well as port injection suggests otherwise. At city speed, the 2022 Subaru BRZ delivers 20 MPG in the city, and about 27 MPG out on the highway, while the combined EPA rating is 22 MPH with the manual transmission.
Opting for the automatic transmission though helps in this regard, returning 21/30/25 MPG in city/highway/combined tests. The 13.2-gallon fuel tank capacity offers a decent range of over 350 miles on the highways with the manual transmission, while the automatic will get you a maximum of 400 miles on the single tank of gas.

Since both the BRZ and GR 86 share the same powertrain and have identical gas tank capacities, both also offer a similar range as well. That said, the lightweight construction of the Mazda MX-5 aids it in offering much higher fuel efficiency. But even with the smaller fuel tank capacity, it does offer a similar range as that of the 2022 BRZ.
The 2022 Subaru BRZ gets the same 4 seat interior layout but there are quite a bit of new and improved elements to talk about. The use of leather, Alcantara, and aluminum in the right places makes the interior of the Subaru BRZ a nice place to be in. The touchpoints of the car like the steering wheel, gear knob are all wrapped in leather, and the seats get a combination of leather and Alcantara. The overall heart and quality of the materials also feel a lot better than its predecessor.
The 2022 Subaru BRZ does get plenty of new hardware which includes the likes of an all-new 7” driver’s display which displays plenty of information and sports performance telemetry somewhat similar to the system found in Nissan GT-R’s and other supercars which can display lap-timers, oil temperature and other useful bits of information that might come handy during track days.

On the inside, the Miata offers more space for the two passengers, while the BRZ and GR 86 both have a rear seat. That said, the rear seats are hardly of any use and are best suited for young kids or for additional luggage. Cargo capacity also comes at a premium here, and the Miata is good enough only for a week's worth of groceries.
Also new for the 2022 BRZ, is an updated infotainment system that uses the same 8-inch unit seen on most modern Subaru’s and it offers much better connectivity options than the outgoing car’s 6.2” unit, all thanks to the latest features from the SUBARU STARLINK. There are a few physical buttons and knobs as well, along with the touch inputs that aids in controlling the infotainment system while on the move.
The 2022 Subaru BRZ looks like it had a sensible salad for breakfast and is all set to go to a boardroom meeting all decked up when compared to its predecessor. Gone are the street, boy-racer looks and instead the new 2022 BRZ looks more mature with well-defined cuts and creases and with lesser angular headlamps.
The rear profile is however a lot cleaner and well defined than the outgoing version. The 18-inch alloy wheels and the wide fenders make it look bigger and wider too and it's arguably a much better daily driver from an aesthetic standpoint. The 5-inch ground clearance is enough to be able to use it as a daily commuter car, and there is a choice of 7 different colors offered by Subaru

Again, in terms of dimensions, the Toyota and Subaru are identical in dimensions as well and are pretty similar in terms of their design as well. The Miata is smaller in size and has a lower stance as well and has a sportier appeal on the streets is the one that will attract more eyeballs.
Subaru gives its offerings paramount importance on the safety front and the 2022 Subaru BRZ should be no different either. Now though the 2020 Subaru BRZ did get a respectable 4 out of 5 stars in the safety crash from the NHTSA, we expect the 2022 Subaru BRZ to go all the way for the perfect 5 on 5 rating in the crash tests, as now based on the Subaru Global Platform, the 2022 BRZ gets a reinforced chassis with a sub-frame high-strength body structure that is designed to keep the passengers inside safe at all costs.
Even the IIHS is yet to crash-test the BRZ for the 2022 model year. Furthermore, the 2022 Subaru BRZ also comes with Subaru's latest EyeSight safety system, which offers the latest active and passive safety features available. SUBARU STARLINK also offers an array of features that keep you connected to services such as the Enhanced Roadside Assistance and Automatic Collision Notification amongst other features.
The sibling rivalry is pretty fierce between these two icons, as the Toyota 86 offers a marginally lower price and offers the nostalgia associated with it. Even with the same powertrain, the Subaru is quicker off the mark. Rest in all aspects, it's an even game, making the decision of choosing between the two totally based on personal preference. We would go for the 86.
The MX-5 Miata has been a tuner's delight for ages now, and with the new generation model, it has become even more capable than before. It is compact, agile, nimble around the corners, but the BRZ is quicker, offers more cabin space and a marginal larger trunk. The higher practicality makes the 2022 BRZ the more sensible choice here.
The 2022 Subaru BRZ is not just a minor overhaul, it’s a leap in almost every direction. Subaru has focused on what the consumers wanted and they have delivered with a powertrain that’s not just more powerful, but sharper and better in every single way. Moreover, they have kept the essence of the fun-to-drive compact coupe and added modern tech to make it more livable as a daily driver.
