Overall Rating
The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek could go on sale by fall of 2021 as a carry-over model. For 2021, Subaru brought along design and suspension upgrades along with a more powerful 2.5-liter engine, offered exclusively with the Limited and Sport models. So as part of the 2022 update, it would be great if that 182hp 2.5-liter flat-4 motor saw an expansion of availability. Otherwise, a 2.0-liter flat-4 engine serves the purpose of being the base powertrain. We expect the 2022 Crosstrek to start at under $24,000.
The compact 2022 Subaru Crosstrek enters into its fifth model year and is for sale in showrooms near you. Subaru will bring minor feature changes to 2022 Crosstrek with an all-new generation on the way in 2023. Safety in the form of the latest EyeSight Driver Assist technology will be standard in CVT-equipped models. Prices for the 2022 Crosstrek will start from an MSRP of $22,445 for the base trim. The Crosstrek Hybrid will also be part of the 2022 model lineup, with a starting price of $35,645.
So as part of the 2022 update, the new Crosstrek will feature both the 182 hp 2.5-liter flat-4 motor now standard in the Limited trim along with the base 2.0-liter flat-4 powertrain. Aside from that, the 2022 Crosstrek will be carried over with similar specs. Subaru also introduced the new Crosstrek Sport with two new hot exterior colors Plasma Yellow Pearl and Horizon Blue Pearl. The Subaru Crosstrek competes in price with the affordable Hyundai Kona, sporty Mazda CX-3, and comfortable Buick Encore.
There isn't an official announcement on the trims and features available for now. However, customers can check out the 2021 model for more details on what trims they could expect.

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek line-up will come with 4 different trims levels: Crosstrek, Crosstrek Premium, Crosstrek Sport, Crosstrek Limited. The prices are expected to start at $22,445, including a $1050 destination charge. The 2022 Crosstrek will get two engine options one being a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and the sport and above trims feature a turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Subaru Boxer Engine.
The 2.0-liter engine comes mated to a six-speed manual or a CVT transmission while the 2.5-liter engine comes only with the CVT transmission; both send power to all four wheels. Other updates from 2021 include some styling refresh, enhanced ground clearance, a better-tuned suspension setup, and a stronger roof rack.

Thus with the increased ground clearance and a redesigned front and rear bumper, the Crosstrek has better approach and departure angles. The approach angle has improved by 1.4 degrees while the departure angle has increased by 1.9 degrees. As a bonus, you get a full-size spare wheel while the 17-inch alloy wheels are standard shod in all-terrain Yokohama Geolander tires.
For an ultimate driving and comfort experience, the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Premium trim with its 152 hp 2.0L Flat-4 engine, is the one that we'd gladly recommend. Second in command after the base variant, this Premium trim priced at an expected MSRP of $24,945 delivers on all fronts, with features ranging from Subaru STARLINK Safety systems to an available power moonroof and leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Subaru will bring few changes to the 2022 Crosstrek, but the 2023 Crosstrek will be the model to watch - TorqueNews.Com
Previously, the Crosstrek only came with one engine variant. It was lackluster and didn’t really offer the grunt and punch that enthusiastic drivers would come to expect out of the Crosstrek. But Subaru quickly addressed the situation by introducing the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek with two engine options, which are expected to be carried forward to the 2022 variants as well. The base and Premium trims get the 2.0L flat-4 (boxer engine) which produces 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. The higher trims, namely the Sport and Limited get the 2.5L flat-4 which churns out about 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque.
The base engine can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), but the better engine comes only with a CVT. All models are AWD. The Crosstrek is not a light crossover and the 2.0L quite visibly struggles on occasions to pull the Japanese SUV around. It feels underpowered, especially when you need the extra juice during a highway run. Also, the manual transmission is slightly faster than the CVT but suffers from adverse effects on fuel economy figures.

The CVT is quite horrendous since it is sluggish and doesn’t change gears swiftly. All of that is addressed with the new 2.5L engine, which is also the same used in the Forester and Outback. This boxer offers slightly more power but that is enough to give the extra edge to the Crosstrek. New buyers should opt for this option. The base engine variant of the Crosstrek pushes it from a complete standstill to 60 MPH in about 8.8 seconds and finishes the quarter-mile in 16.9 seconds, which can be painstakingly slow, especially on the highway.
However, as Subaru’s have always been famous for, their boxer engine offers increased stability. All of this means a rather enjoyable driving and handling experience. The new engine will hit 0-60 MPH in 7.8 seconds and takes 16 seconds for the quarter-mile, which is a significantly better result than the base engine. The Crosstrek is not the slowest car on the list, as the Hyundai Kona and Buick Encore take that place. However, the Mazda CX-3 is fractionally faster than the Subaru, which makes it slightly more ideal if you want to chase speed in your budget crossover. The Crosstrek makes the most power, even in its base trim, but that doesn’t translate all that well.
The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek with its base engine has a pretty decent fuel economy rating of 28/33/30 for city/highway/combined driving respectively. This is with the CVT equipped. If you opt for the manual transmission, those figures are going to drop to 22/29/25 for the same, which is quite a big hit just by switching to manual. The more powerful engine of the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek gets a fuel economy rating of 27/34/29 MPG for city/highway/combined driving respectively.

For a regular crossover, these figures should impress anyone. Even though they are not the best, they will surely not eat up all your money just for daily commuting. The gas tank size is 16.6 gallons, which means you get a range of 464/547/498 miles for city/highway/combined driving on the base engine with CVT. With the manual, you get 365/481/415 miles of range. With the bigger engine and CVT, you are rewarded with 448/564/481 miles on a full tank. The CVT shows some pretty amazing range for the Japanese vehicle on a full tank. While the manual also can go for huge distances, it still doesn’t reach as far as the other two options.
The all-new 2022 Subaru Crosstrek will get numerous upgrades. Visual changes are far from significant. The interior will only get improved tech - USCarsNew.Com
We are not expecting any drastic changes to be made on the interior of the 2022 Crosstrek and for the most part, it should remain the same. Right after steeping in, you would notice that the interior is mostly focused on being practical rather than luxurious. That doesn’t mean that the quality is bad. Subaru has not compromised the interior quality of the Crosstrek and offers excellent build quality. The dashboard looks pretty modern and up-to-date with time.
The accents and stitching lift up the mood. The seats are also pretty comfortable and are heavily bolstered. The front seats are 6-way manually adjustable. The higher Crosstrek trims get leather-wrapped seats and also the leather-wrapped steering wheel. The rear seats are pretty comfortable too. They can be folded in a 60/40-split to expand the rear cargo storage area. However, the rear row legroom is severely compromised as compared to the front, so tall passengers might find it a bit uncomfortable.

Subaru’s STARLINK infotainment software is one of the most exciting infotainment systems, and the 6.5” touchscreen is of beautiful quality. The Limited trim comes with an 8” screen. The user interface is pretty intuitive, highly responsive and the screen is pretty crisp. You get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Also, you get AM/FM stereo, Bluetooth audio streaming, 4G LTE WiFi Hotspot, SiriusXM Radio, etc. 4 speakers in the base trim and 6 in the higher trims are standard, but you can upgrade to Harman Kardon surround sound system.
The Subaru Crosstrek offers about 20.8 cubic feet of cargo storage, which is fairly decent and in line with what others have to offer at this segment. You can easily fit bags and luggage for some weekend trips and your regular groceries. If you want more space, you can always go for folding the rear seats which opens up more space to load items. The front row seating is the best in the Crosstrek. Coming to the rear row, there is limited space in all of the crossovers, but the Crosstrek still slightly offers more space than the competition.
With a healthy 8.7 inches of ground clearance, the Crosstrek can take you places most small SUVs, including the Honda Fit and the Kia Soul, cannot - Edmunds
The Japanese crossover is quite handsome. The aesthetics play a huge role since cars at this price point are usually boring. The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek has sharp and angular headlights and a muscular hood upfront. The grille is kept small but still tidy to enhance the front fascia.
The sides are mostly flush and easy to flow to the rear, where the big taillights and Subaru badging make it look pretty cool. The overall design is quite sleek and features multi-reflector halogen headlights with DRLs. The wheels are also quite stylish and come in 17-inches.

Only the Limited trim gets all-LED lighting all around. The Crosstrek is not the heaviest but it is pretty close to that mark at over 3100 pounds. The 2022 Crosstrek has the longest wheelbase and the highest ground clearance, part of why it looks so SUV-esque. It’s also the longest and pretty tall too.
The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek had passed the safety benchmark test with flying colors and as a result, has been rewarded with a perfect five-star safety rating from NHTSA. And we expect similar performance from the 2022 model as well. It also got the Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS, and both of these accolades speak volumes about how safe the Japanese vehicle is.
With that being said, the 2022 model gets Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist which offers safety features, such as Pre-Collision and Post-Collision system, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Vehicle Stability Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centering, etc. Overall, when it comes to the safety of yourself and your loved ones, the 2022 Crosstrek has got you covered.
The 2022 Hyundai Kona though diminutively lesser priced, delivers lower performance than the Subaru Crosstrek, in almost every imaginable aspect. Its acceleration feels sluggish off the line and consequently, it takes a higher amount of time to achieve each feat where the Crosstrek shines.
But what makes the Subaru a utilitarian and pragmatic choice over its contemporary is its commodious cabin that grants higher space for both front and rear seat occupants.
The 2022 Buick Encore is the only crossover in the segment that bears a higher price sticker than the Subaru Crosstrek, but being expensive does not translate into being a better performer.
The Crosstrek gains categorized ascendancy over the Encore in performance, efficiency, space, and comfort. Consequently, the Subaru Crosstrek remains streets ahead of its competitor.
The last model in the second generation of the Subaru Crosstrek has hit dealerships across the US. The pricing is reported to remain more or less the same, with Subaru adding a $200 hike to the said MSRP. The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek looks promising and if it's anything like the 2021 Crosstrek, we'd ask you to go for it.
