About 2022 Toyota Camry

4.0

Overall Rating

America's best-seller since 2022, the Camry is back for 2022 with a total of 4 trims (excluding TRD and SE Nightshade editions) - LE, XLE, SE, XSE are on offer with the XSE, SE trims getting sportier elements like stiffer suspension setup, with the LE, XLE emphasizing luxury. Prices for the 2022 Toyota Camry start from $25,295. The Toyota Camry rivals the likes of the Honda Accord, Kia K5, and Nissan Altima.

America's best-selling midsize sedan since 2002, the Toyota Camry has returned mostly unchanged for the 2022 model year. The 2022 Camry does get some feature enhancements in the form of the dual-zone climate control system being made standard on the LE trims, illuminated mirrors on offer in the front sunshade, and selectable driving modes. The Camry continues to offer good interior space, decent cargo-carrying capacity, and 3 engine options- 3.5L V6, 2.5 I-4, and a hybrid version as well.

Toyota is continuing to offer the TRD grade of the Camry for the 2022 model year as well. A total of 4 trims (excluding TRD and SE Nightshade editions) - LE, XLE, SE, XSE are on offer with the XSE, SE trims getting sportier elements like stiffer suspension setup, with the LE, XLE emphasizing luxury. Prices for the 2022 Toyota Camry start from $25,295. The Toyota Camry rivals the likes of the Honda Accord, Kia K5, and Nissan Altima.

Our recommendation for the trim to choose is the Camry XLE as it offers a big 9-inch touchscreen system, leather upholstery, and power-adjustable heated seats as standard equipment. It is priced at $30,045, which makes it quite a good bargain in terms of price and features.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

The 2022 Toyota Camry comes with five trim levels (including the Nightshade) -  LE, SE, SE Nightshade, XLE, and XSE - in 13 different configurations. There was a slight change in the 2021 Camry's trim lineup as the base L model, which used to come for $24,425, was discontinued for 2021. The midsize sedan offers two engine options across the range - a base 2.5L inline-4 and a more powerful 3.5L V6 engine and all trims get FWD as standard.

However, Toyota is offering the option of an AWD drivetrain on all trims as well with the 2.5-liter engine. Many safety and driver-assistance features like forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control come as standard too, courtesy of the standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+.

Buying Advice

If you are looking for your Toyota Camry to be equipped with a V6 engine and leather upholstery, you will have to move to XLE. It too comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard but you can add all-weather capability with optional all-wheel drive.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

"With eight speeds, there's always a gear for the occasion, but expect two-gear downshifts when you dip into gas as it tries to make do with the available engine power" - Edmunds

The 2022 Toyota Camry derives its power from one of the two available engine choices on offer. The standard choice is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine putting out 203 horsepower of power and 184 pound-feet of torque. Also available is a rare-for-the-segment V6. This 3.5 liters V6 oil burner puts out an output of 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque.

Both engines are mated with 8-speed automatic transmission. We expect an all-wheel-drive option will continue with the base engine for the 2022 Toyota Camry. Compared to its rivals, this Toyota doesn’t offer the best performance and for the 2022 version, the 7.6 seconds 0-60 mph acceleration time remains unchanged.

Fuel Economy

The Toyota Camry is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in its class and hence provides great MPG figures. Considering that the 2022 version comes with similar mechanicals as the 2021 Camry, you can expect the exemplary figures to continue in the new generation. This mid-size sedan offers a mileage of 28 mpg in the city, 39 mpg on the highway, with a combined efficiency of 32 mpg.

Talking about the AWD Camry, the combined fuel economy drops by about three mpg. The trims like TRD, XLE, and  XSE, all of which come with the 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 motor, put out a lower combined gas mileage of 25 mpg, with 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. That said, if you go for the Camry Hybrid, you can expect an excellent combined mileage of 46 mpg.

With a fuel tank capacity of 13.2 gallons, the Camry will manage to return a combined range of 607 miles. We don’t have the EPA estimates of the upcoming model but the 2021 Camry’s figures are far better than any of its competitors, which we hope will continue. Other than this, the Honda Accord’s turbocharged engine takes it close, and with the level of performance on offer, it sure is the only true rival of the Camry out there.

"Four doors, a big trunk, and enough space for the family - it's everything the modern midsize sedan needs." -Edmunds

Talking about the interiors of the 2022 Camry, Toyota continues to offer a floating center console as last year. Although it does blends well with the available light color interiors, soft-touch material around the dash, and faux-leather trimmed seats. All these combined with the infotainment system give the Camry an upscale look.

Every 2022 Camry comes with Toyota’s typical no-nonsense instrumentation and a dashboard infotainment touchscreen, a great 9” touchscreen available on typically the XSE and the XLE and 7” on lower trims. It signed up with Apple CarPlay assistance as the normal gear on all trim levels.

The 2022 Camry gets a similar Infotainment setup as last year. but we do expect the next generation of the Camry to get a redesigned infotainment setup, as can be seen in the all-new 2022 Tundra pickup truck. The unit isn't the slickest out there but is easy to understand and will get all your entertainment needs sorted.

The Camry gets power adjustments for the front passengers, with memory settings on offer for the driver side on the higher trims. The 15.1 cu-ft of boot space is good enough for most daily errands or even a small weekend getaway. The other notable features of the cabin are:

  • 7- or 9-in touchscreen with six speakers
  • Android Auto & Apple CarPlay compatible
  • SiriusXM with 3-month All Access trial subscription
  • Available nine JBL speakers with subwoofer and amplifier

Exterior

"After receiving a mild face-lift for the 2021 model year, the Camry is expected to soldier on mostly unchanged for 2022." - MotorTrend

The Toyota Camry has received compliments for its dapper looks with its latest update and the 2022 Camry embodies the same treatment. With the massively upgraded exteriors on the outside, which came with LED headlights and neatly integrated LED DRLs along with blacked-out grille and elegant-looking 19-inch alloy wheels for the higher trims like XSE, the 2022 Toyota Camry looks even more rounded than its yesteryear model.

The exteriors of the 2022 Camry feature a striking front fascia, pronounced cutouts, sweeping character lines, and upgraded lighting elements. The newer look from 2021 has helped it eschew the last of its bland styling, delivering a much more robust persona and the upcoming model will further up its game in the exterior styling department.

Dimension-wise, at 5.7 inches, the Camry offers the highest ground clearance amongst its rivals while the 2021 Altima is the lowest at 4.9 inches. However, in the mid-size family sedan class, the dimensions of the Accord, and that of the Altima are almost similar to Camry's. The Kia manages to rival Toyota in terms of ground clearance by besting all its other rivals.

2022 Toyota Camry Vs 2021 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord has been one of the biggest rivals of the Toyota Camry in the midsize sedan segment. It impresses with its sharp steering, confident cornering, large trunk, and premium cabin. On the other hand, the 2022 Toyota Camry is available with a V6 engine and all-wheel drive, whereas the Honda Accord is front-wheel-drive only but compensates that by offering a choice of turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Either way, you can’t go wrong choosing between these two vehicles.

2022 Toyota Camry Vs 2021 Nissan Altima

The Nissan Altima got a facelift recently and has been now able to take the fight to the Toyota Camry in the midsize sedan segment. The Altima gets two engine options coupled with a CVT gearbox that ensures a smooth ride. The seats of the Altima have been ergonomically designed offering good support and comfort. However, the 2022 Toyota Camry comes with a powerful V6 under its hood and coupled with its athletic handling, the Altima sure loses out few brownie points against it. While on the practicality front the Altima with a bigger boot does better than the Camry. So if you want something different from the herd Altima could be a decent choice.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Toyota Camry ticks a lot of boxes when it comes to being the most ideal midsize sedan. Be it performance, storage capacity, exterior design, interior features, fuel economy, or safety features, the Camry fulfills all the demands that customers in this segment ask for. Couple with that, an amazing after-sales network and unmatched reliability and resale value, and what you have on your hands is a midsize sedan that is sure to rule the segment in the coming future as well.
