About 2022 Toyota GR Supra

3.7

Overall Rating

Toyota after listening to the humongous fanbase of enthusiasts revived the legendary Supra in 2020. It is a truly extraordinary offering from Toyota in this new iteration.

Toyota after listening to the humongous fanbase of enthusiasts revived the legendary Supra in 2020. It is a truly extraordinary offering from Toyota in this new iteration. For this new Supra, Toyota makes use of an engine and transmission sourced directly from BMW. But still, the Japanese automaker has worked its magic, and the Supra feels nothing like the Z4 in its handling and driving experience and is more agile and responsive than the BMW.

Amongst the available options, the Toyota GR Supra 3.0 makes for a perfect choice for enthusiasts. We further recommend opting for the Driver Assistance Package to add necessary driver assistance and safety features including an Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind-spot Monitor, and Lane Departure System. But if you want exclusivity, you should go for the A91-CF trim because only 600 units will be made.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2022 Toyota GR Supra is available in four trim levels. The pricing starts at $44,215 for the base 2.0 and goes all the way up to $64,305 for the A91-CF top-tier trim. While the new limited-edition trim gets abundant carbon fiber for improved performance and weight optimization, the 3.0 trims benefit from improved features like heated seats, a distinct interior scheme, and an optional premium sound system. The other key features of each trim are listed below.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

The 2022 Toyota GR Supra gets a roaring 2.0 L turbocharged inline-four engine, which is made by BMW. That’s right, the Japanese car has a German heart. The engine is potent and interesting, producing a meaty 255 horses and 295 foot-pounds of torque. The engine is mated to an 8-speed BMW-made automatic gearbox. And oh boy, does it all fit together? Yes, it does, and you get that insane surge of power every time you floor the throttle. The gearshifts occur in the blink of an eye and the shifts are butter smooth and very precise. The Supra manages to put that wicked grin on your face when you hit the accelerator, just like the older ones did.

The GR Supra is also available with a 3.0L turbocharged inline-six mill, sourced from BMW which produces a hefty 382 horses. It is the same engine as the BMW M240i, but in a different state of tune, so it produces slightly more power. Even with the 2.0L engine, the Supra is pretty quick off the line, with 0-60 coming up in just 5 seconds flat and it covers the quarter-mile in just over 13 seconds. The Supra is electronically limited to 155 MPH, just like the BMW 2-Series Coupe.

But the Toyota GR Supra isn’t just meant for outright acceleration, but it is built for the city limits as well. It remains perfectly poised on the road at high speeds and is supremely stable even in high-speed corners. The tires provide insane amounts of grip, and the car remains planted on the road. There is minimal body roll on offer due to stiffened suspension and usage of anti-roll bars. It has that twitchy steering response that develops a connection between the steering wheel and the tires.

The Porsche is the most exciting and powerful option producing 300 horses of power. It is also the fastest accelerating car with 0-60 coming up in just 4.9 seconds. That is properly fast. The Supra does it in 5 seconds flat. While the Audi and the Bimmer reach 60 MPH in just over 5 seconds. The Porsche surprisingly gets the highest top speed at 170 mph, while BMW 2-Series Coupe and the Supra get top speeds of 155 mph. The Audi is the slowest in terms of both acceleration and speed with the lowest top speed at 130 mph.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

Despite having potent performance, the GR Supra is very fuel-efficient too. The Supra delivers 25 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway. This turns to 28 MPG combined. The Supra gets a 13.7-gallon fuel tank. This means that you can go for around 342 miles in the city and 438 miles on the highway in a single tank of fuel.

The Supra is the most efficient car in the lot and is mechanically similar to the BMW, despite the latter’s lower state of tune. It also has the same fuel tank capacity as the BMW 2-series which is 13.7 gallons. The Audi TT gets the largest tank which is 14.5 gallons and it is close to the Supra in fuel efficiency. The Porsche is the least efficient of the group which is as expected since it is the most powerful. It averages 22 MPG in the city.

Interior
7.5/10

The 2022 Toyota GR Supra gets bucket seats with aggressive bolstering. The seats are covered in plush Alcantara leather and both seats are 14-way power-adjustable with power lumbar support. Good quality plastics have been used and the overall fit and finish feel premium. It is not surprising because Toyota has used generously used materials from BMW’s parts bin.

The overall theme of the cabin is driver-centric with all the controls and reeks of refinment. The seats are comfortable and supportive even for long hauls. But the position is a bit aggressive which makes you fatigued. The headroom is adequate but taller drivers will feel it to be a bit lacking. However, unlike the 2-Series Coupe with which it shares a majority of its setup, the Supra is devoid of a rear seat, making it a bit less practical. But, the Supra is an iconic legend, you would want to hold onto, no matter what.

As for the infotainment system, Toyota sources the unit from the BMW. The Supra gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system which runs BMW’s iDrive system. It uses a reskinned version of iDrive which Toyota likes to call the Supra Connect. The system is very intuitive to use and doesn’t feel distracting during driving. There is a touchpad for controlling the infotainment system, and also ergonomically placed shortcut buttons for various functions. The Supra comes pre-wired for SiriusXM satellite radio. The digital gauge instrument cluster is completely redesigned and doesn’t look anything like BMW. However, the only drawback we find in this system is the absence of Android Auto connectivity, which feels odd for a car in its class.

The Porsche and the Supra are two-seaters. The Audi and the Bimmer are four-seaters but the rear seats are cramped and best suited for children. And due to this stunt of fitting in two more seats, the front seat comfort and space have taken a hit. The Porsche gets the roomiest trunk, while the Supra gets the least. While you could differentiate amongst the four options on the basis of their space and carrying capacity, it is difficult to declare a certain winner in terms of build quality, as all four coupes are crafted finely and get the best materials at their disposal.

Standout interior features:

  • 14-way power-adjustable sport seat
  • Driver seat memory function with lumbar and bolster adjustment
  • Leather-trimmed sport seats
  • Carbon fiber interior trims
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters

Exterior
6.0/10

The 2022 Toyota GR Supra looks handsome and sporty. The front is distinctively aggressive with sleek cutting-edge LED headlamps. Each headlight gets a two-level, 6 LED light cluster. The DRLs run across the bottom and extend to the middle of the front. Just like the A80 Supra from the 90s, the GR Supra gets a unique double-bubble roof and is designed for optimizing airflow and improving aerodynamics by reducing air drag. The Supra gets dynamic Rear LED taillights which are chiseled into the sculpted rear of the car. It merges cleanly with the flowing lines at the rear.

The Supra gets 18-inch aluminum Alloy wheels as standard, while the 3.0L premium and A91-CF trims come with 19-inch forged Aluminum alloys shod with Michelin Pilot SuperSport tires. The overall silhouette of the Supra looks mesmerizing and it's not only form but function also – because the Supra’s design provides it with an optimal coefficient of drag and excellent downforce which result in superb handling.

The Supra has the shortest wheelbase amongst the competition and hence it is the most agile and nimble car in the group. The BMW is the only car here with a wheelbase of more than 100 inches, which translates to usable rear seats and better boot space. The Bimmer is also the most practical car here because it has the highest ground clearance of 5.5 inches. While the Porsche 718 Cayman and Audi TT Coupe are smaller by an inch and even are closely matched with the Toyota in terms of wheelbase and measure almost 97.4 and 98.6 inches, respectively.

Standout exterior features:

  • 19-inch aluminum twin-spoke alloys
  • Auto folding heated outside mirrors
  • 6-lens auto-leveling LED headlights
  • LED taillights
  • Auto-dimming driver’s side outside mirror
  • Rear spoiler
  • Dual rear exhaust with stainless steel exhaust tips

Safety
6.0/10

Though the NHTSA and IIHS have not tested the Toyota GR Supra, safety should not be a concern because the other cars from the manufacturer have been tested and many have been awarded five stars. The Toyota GR Supra has got a complete safety net of electronics to watch your back. It gets Frontal, Side, Knee, and Rollover airbags, along with a Vehicle Stability Control system and Brake Assist System.

There is also a Pre Collison System along with Pedestrian Detection which applies brakes autonomously when any obstruction is detected in front. Additional features such as adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring can be added via the optional Driver's. Assist package for only $1,195.

Standout safety features:

  • Hill Start Assist Control
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian detection
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rearview Parking Camera
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Engine Immobilizer

Competition

2022 Toyota GR Supra vs 2021 BMW 2-Series 230i Coupe

The BMW 2-Series Coupe vaunts a commodious cabin and allows you the option to carry two more passengers, thanks to a partly practical pair of rear seats. The advantages, however, do not extend any further. Inspite of having the same engine as the GR Supra, the Bimmer churns out lesser power. However, it is much cheaper and a more practical package overall. But, when you add the Supra’s terrific driving dynamics and nimble handling into the equation, the GR Supra becomes the best recommendation in this segment.

2022 Toyota GR Supra vs 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe

The Cayman Coupe is fun-to-drive, nimble, and agile. It is also much more powerful than the GR Supra in its base configuration and returns some impressive performance figures. Being a Porsche, the Cayman offers impressive interiors and a futuristic infotainment system. But its exorbitant pricing might not sit well with most of the buyers. If money is no object, the Cayman Coupe is the better choice any day, but the GR Supra is a more value-for-money product.

2022 Toyota GR Supra vs 2021 Audi TT Coupe

The Audi TT boasts of impressive build quality and an opulent cabin with well laid-out interiors, but neither is it as powerful nor fun to drive as the Supra. The Audi is also nearly $5,000 more expensive than the Supra and it has the least top speed among the competition. Its acceleration figures are also not that interesting. Though it has an excellent Quattro AWD system, the lethargic powertrain and driving dynamics take away its charm and without a doubt, the iconic Supra gains ascendancy over the TT Coupe.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Toyota GR Supra is a beast, meant for the purists. It offers impressive driving dynamics, nimble handling, and agile performance. The interiors are luxurious and ergonomic, while the seats also bestow maximum comfort and feel leisurely. It also makes an astonishing track car. You can also get the tail out with some aggressive driving. It provides for proper driving pleasure, and inadvertently plasters a smile across your face. So, the GR Supra sits at the absolute top of the 2-door coupe segment under $50,000.
