Overall Rating
After a major facelift last year, the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon gets a $3,000 price hike this year. For that sum, the engine gets higher output, the R-Line package is now standard from SE trim onwards, and there are additional interior features on offer. Following its Q4 release date, the Arteon is now available for sale at a $41,190 price tag. The top-end SEL Premium R-Line trim also gets an optional 20-inch Graphite Wheels Package and can do the 0-60 in 6 seconds while also returning 26 MPG combined.
After receiving a mid-life refresh for the 2021 model year, the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon gets considerable changes this year as well. To begin with, the 2L turbocharged four-cylinder engine now gets more power and torque output than before, taking the tally to 300 hp and 295 lb-ft. Also, a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission repaces the older torque converter automatic transmission.
The interior now features a wireless charging pad as standard from SE trim while the exterior gets the R-Line appearance package as standard across the lineup for the 2022 model year. This sees a hike in prices by $3,000 and the top SEL R-Line trim also gets an option to upgrade to a 20-inch Dark Graphite Wheel package.
With all these changes, the price now starts at $41,190 as it competes against the likes of other full-size sedans like Kia Stinger, Nissan Maxima, and Toyota Avalon along with other premium offerings like Audi A5 Sportback and Infiniti Q50.Â
Amongst the available options, the SEL R-Line trim seems to be the perfect combination of practicality and quirkiness. It gets you a fair amount of additional features over the base trim to justify its price tag. It comes equipped with features like leather upholstery, seat memory, and a sunroof. However, if you are looking for Sportback on a budget, the base trim would suffice your requirements.

"The Arteon is the prettiest and fanciest VW, but its held back by demure dynamics, and a not quite upscale cabin." - Car and driver

"Although the Arteon has athletic looks, it doesn't handle as well as we'd like, and in previous model years, it suffered from excessive body roll." - Motortrend
Under the hood, the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon now produces 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from the same 2L turbocharged inline-4 engine.
The power has seen a rise by 32 hp this year, while the torque output has increased by 37 lb-ft over the 2021 model year. Also new is the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that takes power the front wheels as standard and replaces the older 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

The adaptive suspension setup is also standard and the different driving modes which include Comfort, Normal, and Sport, can be used to adapt to your driving styles.

The Kia Stinger offers the most impressive engine output and hence is also the quickest off the. Despite having abundant power reserves, the efficiency-centric powertrain from VW is one of the slowest here along with the Maxima and Avalon.
In terms of pricing though, the 2022 Arteon feels steep while the Stinger feels the most value for money based on its performance.
With the slicker transmission on offer, the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon now returns 22 MPG in the city, 36 MPG on the highways, and 26 MPG combined as per the EPA. This indicates a rise in fuel economy ratings by 4 MPG on the highway and 1 MPG combined as compared to last year.
Opting for the 4Motion AWD drops these figures by only around 1-2 MPG in each aspect. the large 17.4-gallon fuel tank capacity also aids in offering an impressive range of over 600 miles on the highway.

The Kia Stinger is not only more powerful than the Arteon but also returns better fuel efficiency. It even surpasses the Toyota Avalon both in terms of frugality and driving range. The Maxima has the highest fuel consumption here and hence employs a much larger gas tank to compensate for it.
"The VW Arteon offers a huge cargo capacity and user friendly tech features, but many classmates are more luxurious." - cars.usnews.com
The interior of the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon does not get many changes this year after last year's facelift. The design may not be as striking and distinctive as its exterior, but VW makes no compromise in terms of material and build quality. While it doesn't feel as premium as the European luxury carmakers, the Arteon feels premium for its class.
This year, Volkswagen has decided to offer a wireless phone charger as standard from the base SE trim along with three-zone climate control, power driver seat &Â heated front seats, and leatherette upholstery. With no optional features available, one has to opt for the next trim for any more amenities.Â
Therefore, upgrading to SEL R-Line trim gets you premium upholstery but for any more creature comforts like ventilated front seats, heated rear seats & steering wheel, Nappa leather upholstery, and ambient interior light, one has to go for the top-end SEL Premium R-Line trim.Â
Being a Sportback, the Arteon offers the most trunk space in its segment measuring up to 27.2 cu-ft. The rear seats also get 60/40 functionality which extends the cargo space to 56.2 cu-ft. With plenty of large storage pockets and cup holders, the Arteon should be a comfortable cruiser for a family getaway. Â

The Toyota Avalon although has marginally more spacious front seats than the Arteon, the rear seat offers similar legroom and headroom. Both the Stinger and Maxima have much tighter rear-seat legroom to offer. In spite of the shorter wheelbase, the 2022 Arteon offers the best passenger and cargo capacity here, while the Stinger is next in line in terms of trunk capacity.Â
The dashboard of the 2022 Arteon comes with features like Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit as standard, along with an 8-inch Discover Media touchscreen powered by a MIB3 entertainment system.
The infotainment system features Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard and also gets SiriusXM satellite radio and HD radio as standard. The navigation is also offered as standard from the SEL R-Line trim onwards while the Volkswagen Car-Net subscription is also offered across all configurations.
The 8-speaker audio system gets upgraded to a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon premium surround sound system on the top SEL Premium R-Line trim.Â

"Sexy on the outside and subtle on the inside, the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon warrants a second look." - The Car Connection
The 2022 Volkswagen Arteon gets no design changes this year barring the standardization of the R-Line appearance package right from the base SE trim. So the 2022 Arteon now gets light bars that surround the new Volkswagen logo, creating a light signature that aids in driving as standard along with exhaust tips instead of two.
The front fascia boasts of a very contemporary look with straight chrome lines on the grille that extends to the LED headlights. The base Arteon comes with new 18-inch alloy wheels, while the SEL R-Line gets a set of 19-inch wheels, and the SEL-Premium gets the large 20-inch alloy wheels.
The rest of it remains the same as last year with the sharp exterior designs and large aggressive grille at the front. The two SEL trim gets a panoramic sunroof as standard while only the top SEL Premium trim features a hands-free power tailgate. Volkswagen offers the 2022 Arteon in only 5 standard color options which includes the $395 Kings Red Metallic color that looks particularly striking and sporty with the stylish wheel design and sharp exterior design.

The Toyota Avalon is the longest sedan in this comparison which explains the superior legroom inside its cabin. The Arteon on the other hand is the widest while the Stinger's longer wheelbase does little offer additional passenger space inside its cabin.
On the streets though, it is the Kia Stinger and VW Arteon that look the most appealing, contrary to the commuter car look offered by the Maxima.

While Volkswagen is known for building safe cars, the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon hasn't yet been crash-tested by the NHTSA. That said, the IIHS had awarded it with their prestigious "Top Safety Pick" accolade in the safety tests conducted by them for the 2021 model year. VW offers plenty of safety features and driver aids as standard with the 2022 VW Arteon and some of the features onboard the 2021 Arteon include:

The Stinger sedan not only is much quicker than the Arteon, but it is also much more affordable at the $37,135 price tag. Also, it is more frugal and has a sporty exterior design that will attract a lot of eyeballs. The Sportback styling is similar which opens up plenty of cabin and cargo space, making it the obvious choice between the two.
The Maxima is more affordable than the VW Arteon but the powertrain isn't particularly quick and gulps more fuel than the Arteon. The Maxima gets more spacious front seats, but the Arteon offers a more spacious rear-seat legroom and trunk capacity. The appealing styling and plenty of creature comforts make the Arteon feel worth the additional investment.
The Toyota Avalon has similar driving dynamics as the 2022 Arteon and also gets identical MPG ratings. Both also offer similar cabin space for the passengers but the Sportback body style of the Arteon offers plenty more space in the trunk. The higher reliability and better resale value tilt the scales in favor of the Avalon.
While the 2022 VW Arteon might now seem pricier with the MSRP starting at $41,190, the standard R-Line appearance package and more standard features do make it feel somewhat worth the price hike. Add to that the added performance from the 2L engine and faster 0-60 timings and better MPG ratings, there is not much to fault in this full-size sedan.
While at the price, the Europeans offer a more premium interior, the cabin and trunk space on offer in the Arteon is unparalleled. If that is your utmost priority, there's not much competition to the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon.
