Despite being in production for over two years now, the ID4 has received several updates the years, and for 2022 the base model is expected to get even cheaper by localizing production, setting the stage for a huge rise in sales.
The ID4 continues to be available in two trim levels, the Pro and Pro S models. Starting with the base Pro model, the standard feature list includes heated front seats and steering wheel, 19-inch alloy wheels, black roof rails, automatic LED headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, a digital driver display, and several active safety features like forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and more.
Next up is the Pro S (Statement) model which also adds premium LED projector headlights, a panoramic fixed glass roof, a bigger 12-inch infotainment system, 12-way power-adjustable front seats, leatherette upholstery, powered tailgate, 30-color ambient lighting, and more. Both models can be bought with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain and Volkswagen also offers the Gradient package for the Pro S model that includes some design upgrades like bigger 20-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and more.

Which trim should you buy?
Since most buyers are focused on value and are just entering into the EV space, the base Pro model will be more than adequate with a comprehensive standard feature list that includes heated front seats, LED exterior lighting, ambient lighting, a 10-inch infotainment system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and more. The 2022 Volkswagen ID4 has been announced officially and it is confirmed that the production for the same will begin in September of 2022.
ncluding the recently launched dual-motor setup, the 2022 Volkswagen ID4 is available with two powertrain options. The base single motor setup makes 201 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque, powered by a sizeable 77 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The new dual-motor setup also adds an extra motor to the front axle that produces 107 hp and 119lb-ft of torque, for a combined output of 295 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. Like all modern EVs, both powertrains get a single-speed direct-drive transmission. The all-wheel-drive dual-motor setup also offers 2700 pounds of towing capacity.
Being an all-electric model, power delivery is instant and the ID4 feels lively and quick in urban conditions. But, with a single-speed transmission, highway driving will feel sluggish in some instances. The ID4 also misses the initial excitement and lanch we expect from a modern EV. That being said, the ID4 is reasonably quick, with the base single motor model reaching 60 MPH in just 7.6 seconds. The dual-motor setup cuts it down to 5.4 seconds, on par with all of its rivals.
Unfortunately, the hefty curb weight and light steering result in muted dynamics compared to rivals. The turn-in is slow, and there is body roll through the corners. But, all these sacrifices have led to a smooth and comfortable ride that is impressive for an EV. The standard single motor setup is mounted to the rear axle for a rear-wheel-drive configuration, and opting for the dual-motor model will also add an electric motor to the front axle, making the ID4 all-wheel-drive.
Braking performance is better than average with good response and predictable braking. While strong regenerative braking is on offer, the ID4 doesn't offer one-pedal driving like some of its competitors. But, Volkswagen does include different intensity regenerative braking depending on the drive mode.

The Tesla Model 3 continues to lead the pack even in the base Standard model, followed by the Mustang Mach-E. Because of its heavy curb weight and lower power output, the Volkswagen ID4 is the slowest option here by a considerable margin. The Hyundai Kona is marginally better than the VW ID4 when it comes to overall acceleration and performance.
All models of the ID4 get a massive 77 kWh lithium-ion battery pack as standard for an estimated range of 260 miles combined. Because of its heft, the range is lower than some popular rivals like the Tesla Model 3. But, the ID4 should offer a usable range for the average owner. DC fast charging is supported for quick top-ups and the ID4 can also be charged at home through a 110 or 240-volt wall connection.

When entering the EV space, the range is of significant importance to most customers, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E excels in this department even with the base model. However, the expensive Model 3 Long Range trim continues to offer a class-leading range. The Volkswagen ID4 is close to the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus in terms of the claimed range. The Hyundai Kona is also not far behind and offers 258 miles of the claimed range.
The 2022 Volkswagen ID4 gets a simple and futuristic interior with a flat dashboard that houses the instrument cluster and central infotainment display in a neat setup. There are only a handful of switchgear on offer and most of the cabin space is used for storage. Build quality is impressive and the crossover body style liberates plenty of space on the inside for five adults to sit in comfort. Modern touches like configurable ambient lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, and more are included as standard, while higher trims also get a panoramic glass roof and power-adjustable front seats with heating, memory function, and even massage functions.
The seats feel comfortable with good support. There are some unique touches around the cabin, like the sci-fi white color scheme and play/pause symbols on the pedals on some trim levels. Cargo space is also impressive despite the large underfloor battery pack, and the ID4 can easily swallow up the weekend luggage along with the charging cord. Unlike most EVs, there is no front trunk on offer with the ID4.

Being the most compact option here, the Hyundai Kona offers limited space on the inside, especially when compared to the Volkswagen ID4. However, the Ford Mustang Mach-E carves out more space on the inside, making it the most practical option here. The ID4 and the Mustang Mach-E are also leaders in the class in the cargo area department which is significantly better than the other two rivals.
Some notable interior features include:
Depending on the trim level, the ID4 can be bought with either a 10-inch or a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a slick interface made specifically for the ID4. But, all the extra options and features can get confusing at times, especially when compared to the standard interface found in most other VW models. A configurable 5.3-inch digital gauge display is also included as a standard which can show a variety of information. All the latest features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, satellite radio, built-in navigation with streaming to the digital gauge display, and more are also included on both trim levels. An advanced voice control system is also included for easier access.
Some notable infotainment features include:
Like most modern EVs, the 2022 Volkswagen ID4 gets a futuristic and simple design with several elements from the latest Golf generation including the light bar at the front. While it may not appeal to everyone, the design will grow on you, especially with the dual-tone roof option. Massive 19-inch alloy wheels are included as standard along with black or silver roof rails depending on the trim. More expensive models also get a panoramic glass roof and dual-tone paint options. Several crossover design elements like subtle body cladding, skid plates, and more are also included.

With its crossover body style, the Volkswagen ID4 is the biggest option here, followed by the Mustang Mach-E. The Mustang Mach-E has a longer wheelbase compared to the ID4. The Hyundai Kona is fairly compact in comparison, while the Tesla Model 3 gets a fastback design and slots in the middle. The Hyundai Kona Electric has the best ground clearance in the lot.
Some notable exterior features include
Based on the latest MEB platform developed specifically for all-electric models, the Volkswagen ID4 performs exceptionally well in all the safety tests, securing a full five-star overall rating in the NHTSA tests and also earning the "Top Safety Pick+" award from the IIHS. Volkswagen also includes several driver assistance features as part of IQ.DRIVE includes dynamic road sign display, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and more. Features like park distance control, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high-beam headlights are also included.
Some notable standard safety features include:
Being the more recent entrants into the compact EV segment, both the ID4 and Mach-E offer a lot of conveniences and comparable range in the city and on the highway. But, there is a considerable price difference, especially if we consider the localized 2022 ID4, which is expected to start at $35,000. The Mustang Mach-E also stays true to its name with better dynamics and more powerful drivetrain options, although they cost significantly more than the ID4. Overall, if you have the money for it, the Mustang Mach-E is the better option, while the Volkswagen ID-4 is a good alternative for budget-conscious buyers.
Compared to the most popular EV in the market, the Volkswagen ID4 offers some advantages like the taller seating position and a sizable cargo area. But, the Model 3 continues to play to its strengths by offering a lot more performance and athletic dynamics. However, the interiors of the Model 3 remain a sore point with its massive central display that might be intimidating for new users, while the traditional approach for the ID4 will appeal to a wider audience. Both options offer plenty of interior and cargo space. Opting for the Model 3 long-range trim will also offer a class-leading range. Depending on your budget and preferences, both the Tesla Model 3 and Volkswagen ID4 are equally good options.
Although the prices are expected to drop soon, as of today, the Hyundai Kona Electric is significantly cheaper than the Volkswagen ID4 and that remains the biggest selling point for the Hyundai. The compact dimensions also make the Hyundai Kona easier to use in the city. But, the Volkswagen ID4 trumps it with higher quality and spacious interiors, more range, and refined ride quality. The Hyundai Kona offers a lot of value if you're on a budget, but the ID4 is worth the premium over the Hyundai.
Even at the current base price, the Volkswagen ID4 remains one of the best options in the market, and if the low-cost base model is introduced, it has the potential to become the best seller in the lineup. Typical Volkswagen traits like the sophisticated and smooth ride quality, well-built interior, and comprehensive feature list continue to be the major selling points for the ID4. Overall, if you’re planning to enter the EV space, the 2022 Volkswagen ID4 is an option you shouldn’t ignore.
