With no mechanical change as such, the 2022 Volkswagen Passat is coming with its same 174 hp 2.0L Turbo I-4 engine. The trim lineup begins with SE and R Line at a starting price of $28,290 alongside the newly added Limited Edition at an MSRP of $31,290. Moreover, with a combined 28 mpg count and a cargo space of 16 cu-ft, it is impressive on practical fronts.   Â
The VW Passat has been given a range of 4 exterior color options as well. It will be competing against the shares of the Toyota Camry, Chevrolet Malibu, and the Honda Accord for the last time. Though the release date has not been confirmed yet, this 5-seater mid-size sedan is a much awaited machinery.
The Limited Edition of the 2022 VW Passat is surely the most engaging among all. The added power-heated front and rear seats along with navigation and 9-Speaker Fender Audio Unit are just enticing. The power-adjustability throughout the seating is another plus. The VW Care, pricing at $140, is also advisable. Thus, an overall increment of $3,000 at the max brings too many on the table.

"The 2022 Volkswagen Passat emphasizes relaxed cruising over performance." - The Car Connection
The 2022 Volkswagen Passat Sedan is available in three distinct trims - SE, R-Line, and Limited Edition. The base SE trim prices at an MSRP of $28,290 featuring a Power-adjustable driver's seat and 6-speaker audio system as a standard. The driver's seat is also heat functioned and has leather upholstery. It gets a 6.3-inch touchscreen but has been devoid of the navigation unit.
After that comes the R Line, costing $30,290, which includes all the features of SE format along with an additional Premium Fender Audio Set with subwoofer and Navigation algorithms. The last one in the queue is the Limited Edition that further adds rear heated seats and power-flex for both the driver and passenger seats. The collision mitigation and emergency brake assist can also be availed of.

The 2022 Volkswagen Passat continues with the 2.0L Turbo I-4 that produces 174 hp @ 5,000 RPM and a torque of 206 lb-ft @ 4,250 RPM. It is mated with a 6-speed automatic in an FWD layout. The 2022 Passat ticks the 0-60 mph in 8.3 seconds and covers a quarter-mile in 16.3 seconds. Also, its top speed has been limited to 116 mph.
The VW Passat does offer a smooth ride and its inherent body style negates the body roll on its own. However, the lower power-weight ratio does hamper its performance stance. If one is inclined towards multiple powertrain options then Hyundai Sonata can be a capable sedan with its hybrid and sportier N Line that will cost $30,000 at the minimum.

In terms of rivalry, the Honda Accord is simply the best in 0-60 mph with a difference of more than 1.2 seconds than the VW Passat while half a second faster in quarter-mile. The Toyota Camry and Chevrolet Malibu, meanwhile, are comparable to one another. But the latter is quicker on the straight with its 14 mph better top speed despite having a power deficit of 43 hp compared to Camry.
The Passat gets 12.3-inch rotors in the front and 10.7-inch in the rear, all being ABS-assisted, in the 2022 model year. The front discs are vented too. It gets Brake Assist along with Hill Hold Control for extra assurance. But it is also noticeable that the brakes might feel biting, especially the rear ones, for their smaller size than the average 11.1-inch of rivals.
The 2022 Volkswagen Passat is not the most economical sedan with an EPA rating of around 28 MPG combined. But with a fairly sized 18.5-gallon fuel tank, the range figure goes up to 518 miles. Not just that, it also gets an ECON and various other driving modes to alter the driving efficiency depending on the need.

Figuratively speaking, the Honda Accord is 5 mpg more fuel efficient than the 2022 Passat. But the range reach of the Passat is 30 miles more than the 2022 Accord on a combined basis. The Toyota Camry is the most balanced among all as it is 4 mpg more economical than the Passat while covering more than 500 miles on average.
"The Passat still provides a comfortable ride and a roomy, if barren, cabin" - MOTORTREND
The 2022 Volkwagen Passat interior awaits you with its seating leather accents such as the Perforated Vienna and V-Tex. The unchanged heated front seats in the SE and R Line get in pair with the rear heated seats in the new Limited Edition. The power-adjustability is also incorporated throughout the seats with the driver's memory setting in the range-top model.  Â
The 2022 Passat has enough space in both rows. It can accommodate 5 passengers and has a trunk capacity of almost 16 cu-ft. Even the visibility is well off, both in the front and rear. For much more volume inside the cabin, the 2022 Kia K5 can also pop up. Its highest trim has all the necessities right from heating comfort to navigation aid and that too at a cheaper price of $28,685.Â

All the sedans have a balanced interior arrangement. It is just a margin of 1 inch to 2 inches where the Honda Accord and VW Passat outmatch the rest. However, with a 0.8 cu-ft larger cargo capacity, the Accord might just be a little more practical. Apart from that, the Infotainment unit in VW Passat is another aspect to be noted with a considerably smaller 6.3-inch touchscreen display.Â
The entertainment pack of the 2022 VW Passat does include a 6-speaker unit in the SE trim which can be upgraded to a 9-speaker Fender sound system in the R Line and Limited Edition. The Navigation unit also comes into play for the two of the higher trims. Insipte of all these, the overall info-tech in the 2022 model year for the Passat is a backlash. Some features are:
"Like the interior design, the VW Passat's exterior shies away from making any bold statements."- KELLEY BLUE BOOK
The 2022 Volkswagen Passat has been given the pairs of 18-inch and 19-inch alloy wheels for the Limited Edition and R Line respectively. There are 4 exterior coloring trims as well that include the likes of the Racing Green Metallic and Aurora Red Metallic. Along with all extensions, the upgraded Adaptive LED headlights have been attached too in the front and rear.
The VW has not changed the dimensional figures for the Passat in 2022 translating to difficult maneuvering. However, its sibling VW Arteon is 300 lbs heavier yet feels nimble on road. There is no available exterior package for the 2022 Passat too, except for the bumperdillo costing $150 and splash guards at an MSRP of $220.

Among all, the VW Passat is heavier than the Accord and Malibu by nearly 200 pounds. It is followed by the 2022 Camry with a 100 lbs gap. On the other hand, the Accord is the longest by a difference of 2-inch to 3-inch than the rest. But the wheelbase and height remain almost the same.
"In what tests have been performed, the 2022 Volkswagen Passat has earned good crash scores." - The Car Connection
The 2022 Volkswagen Passat has not been tested by the NHTSA yet, but as per the 2021 VW Passat, the rating will continue to be an overall 5-star only. Meanwhile, the IIHS has marked the VW Passat as "Good" overall. This 4-door mid-size sedan has been armed with galvanized steel panels that absorb the crash impact. Inspite of such stature, it could not grab the "Top Safety Pick" Award in its segment.
The VW Passat in 2022 format gets safety features like the Adaptive Cruise Control, Adaptive Blind Spot, and Collision Mitigation System right from the base SE trim. The Emergency Brake Assist and Lane Keep Assist further elongate the list of assets. However, the IQ Drive has been scrapped off for the 2022 model year. Some of the features in the 2022 Volkswagen Passat include:
The 2022 Volkswagen Passat and 2022 Toyota Camry are pretty much on the same scale in terms of performance dynamics. Appearance appeals might vary as per the owner's preference. The cabin spaciousness does favor the Passat along with a better range reach. But the outdated infotainment and production line discontinuity stain the probability of the Passat.
The Chevy Malibu has proven to be a real value on investment. Equivalent figures at a much affordable price tag of $23,265 are way too good. The interior is engaging and space management differs by a margin with respect to the 2022 Passat. So, the lever has to weigh down towards the Malibu.
Faster yet economical, the Honda Accord is going strong on all practical sheets. The exterior styling and interior accents are also impressive. The ride quality is comparable to the 2022 VW Passat. The bigger trunk space and interior cabin compel us to prefer the Honda over the VW.
Since the lineup is about to be ended in the upcoming 2022, and having better options available at the same time is assertive of looking over the VW 2022 Passat. The overall appeal of the Limited Edition might put one in dilemma but on a bigger picture, it is better to let it go for now.
