The Taos is well-equipped apart from safety features on all three trim levels, giving it a solid value- The Car Connection
The all-new 2022 Volkswagen Taos comes in three trim levels: S, SE, and SEL. Pricing starts at $22,995 and goes up to $33,045 for the top trim. Add to that a $1,195 destination charge. Both FWD and AWD configurations are available across the range. The S trim lacks many standard features but the other two models add plenty of comfort and convenience features.
Volkswagen also offers optional upgrades for the S and SE trims. The Convenience package adds a heated steering wheel, automatic high-beam headlights, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The IQ.Drive package consists of the latest driver aids that cost $895. A $1,200 panoramic sunroof is the only option available on the SEL trim.

For one, the Taos seems to have the same polished ride and handling that VW's big SUVs- Edmunds
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos is powered by a new 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 158 hp and 184 lb-ft. of torque. It is derived from the turbocharged 1.4L engine found in other Volkswagen cars. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox on the FWD trim, and to the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox on the AWD. The 8-speed focuses on fuel efficiency whereas the dual-clutch emits a sporty driving character.
The Taos has received a lot of compliments for its ride and handling. People talk about the well-composed nature of the ride, coupled with precise handling and decent stability, especially the AWD model. That's because the FWD Taos gets a torsion beam suspension at the rear whereas the AWD model uses a multi-link setup. The car turns as per the inputs with no lag but it does have some body roll in the corners.
The Taos does not offer spirited acceleration but it offers enough power for merging onto highways. The 0-60 MPH sprint is completed in 7.6 seconds while the quarter-mile drag is covered in 15.8 seconds. These are respectable figures for the class. The Taos gets 4-wheel disc brakes, with ventilated discs at the front. The pedal travel is minimal but the discs fade after repeated use. It took 127 feet to stop from 60 MPH.

The Mazda CX-30 has the best power outputs but its performance is matched with the Taos. However, its optional turbocharged engine can beat the Taos without hesitation. Surprisingly, the Kia Seltos's acceleration is a tad quicker than the Taos. Meanwhile, the Subaru Crosstrek is stuck at the last place due to its sluggish acceleration.
There is a wide gap in fuel economy between front- and all-wheel-drive models- The Car Connection
The fuel economy is pretty impressive in the Volkswagen Taos. EPA says it should get 28 MPG in the city, 36 MPG on a highway, and 31 MPG combined. AWD models use a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and hence, numbers drop down to 25 MPG in the city, 32 MPG on a highway, and 28 MPG combined.
FWD versions get a 13.2-gallon fuel tank whereas AWD models replace it with 14.5 gallons. Even with a small tank, the Taos delivers up to 409 miles of combined driving range, which is outstanding. The Taos also comes with an auto engine start/stop feature that also plays a small role in saving some fuel.

The Kia Seltos give a tough competition to the Taos in this section. The Subaru Crosstrek also has a respectable fuel economy but it delivers the best range here thanks to its large tank. Comparatively, the Mazda CX-30's fuel estimates are the least here, resulting in a low driving range.
The Taos brings Volkswagen's philosophy of affordable refinement to the small SUV class- Edmunds
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos’s interior is rather simple and usual. You see the material quality that goes with the price. This same low-quality material does not go well with the highest trim, which asks for a $30,000+ price. Even though this does fail to impress, one quickly realizes that the Taos’s interior is driven by functionality more, instead of look and fashion. The build is solid and the contrasting colors on the inside cover up the Taos’s lacking in terms of material quality.
The usage of soft-touch materials has helped improve the car’s interior vibe. As for seats, cloth/leatherette upholstery is available across the trims. The seats are cushy and supportive enough for long journeys. Back and lumbar support is excellent, although thigh support can be improved. The car’s width does make the interior roomy for taller occupants. There is a little visibility loss in the rear due to the pillars but in the front, the car offers an excellent view of the world outside.

The Taos offers more cargo space than its rivals, particularly the FWD models. You get a standard cargo capacity of 27.9 cu-ft. while folding the rear seats gives 65.9 cu-ft. of space. AWD models offer a maximum cargo room of 60.2 cu-ft., which is pretty much on par with its competitors. As for the infotainment system, only the base S trim comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen whereas the other two variants upgrade to 8 inches. Regardless of screen size, both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are offered.Â
The MIB infotainment system has a straightforward interface. All the icons are logically placed and operating the system is very easy. The screen has vivid graphics, so you won't have a problem with visibility. The buttons, the knobs, and the responsiveness of the touch interface are excellent and do not feel cheap. The top-end model gets an 8-speaker Beats audio system while lower trims come with 4 and 6 stereo speakers. Some other interior features are:
Volkswagen has made a Taos that fits right in with the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs- Kelly Blue Book
The exterior of the 2022 Volkswagen Taos looks similar to the compact Tiguan. The front fender sits higher, with the Volkswagen logo placed on the honeycomb pattern blacked-out grille. A chrome strip runs along the top of the grille. The headlamps feature a twin LED setup, and higher trims get an illuminated grille as well. The side profile shows well-proportioned square wheel arches with sharp lines that run along the entire length, starting from the front headlamp to the taillights.
There is also the “Taos” branding finished in chrome right under the exterior mirrors. The car has a straight roofline that merges well with the rear. The wheels range from 17 to 19 inches while the wheel design looks really cool. The rear is the part that does remind us of the Tiguan the most, although there is the Taos branding in the center to remind us what we are looking at. Two chrome-lined sockets mimic exhaust ports from far, but it’s just a styling aspect. Overall, the car looks sharp, sporty, and muscular.

The Taos's ground clearance is quite less than its classmates. This makes it easy to enter and exit from the vehicle. It's the opposite story with the Subaru Crosstrek and this particular feature helps it to venture off roads. The low curb weight of the Kia Seltos is the main reason for quicker acceleration than the Taos. The compact dimensions of the Mazda CX-30 will be very useful in city traffic conditions or tight parking lots. Some other exterior features are:
The biggest news is VW's IQ.Drive available on S and SE models and standard on SELs- Carbuzz
The Volkswagen Taos has not yet been safety-rated by NHTSA but IIHS has rated it for its roof strength, front crash prevention, and headlights only. It has received top ratings in all these tests. It is expected that the car will get an excellent score in other crash tests. Therefore, it is good to assume that the Taos is a safe car.
Volkswagen's IQ.Drive is available on the S and SE trims and standard on the range-topping SEL trim. Introduced first in the ID.4, it is a suite of driver assistance features that can help avoid an accident. It also comes with Travel Assist which is a partially automated driving feature and works at speeds up to 95 MPH. Some other features are:
The Subaru Crosstrek offers a rugged design and great off-road capabilities. It offers good gas mileage and also comes standard with an AWD system. Inside, both the SUVs are similarly spacious but the Taos shines in the cargo area. In terms of performance, the Crosstrek suffers from bland handling and dull acceleration. If you value practicality over venturing off-road, choose the Taos.
The Mazda CX-30 is one of the best picks among sub-compact cars. It offers a balance between performance and comfort. The power on the Taos is less but the fuel economy offered is more than the CX-30. The Taos has an excellent cargo hold but the CX-30 benefits from a lengthy list of standard driver aids. The CX-30 does not feature a touchscreen infotainment system like the Taos, which is subjective for some.
Now in its sophomore year, the Kia Seltos is quicker than the Taos but the latter handles better on the road. The Seltos is also available with a punchier turbocharged engine. Like the Taos, it offers excellent fuel economy and impresses buyers with its long list of standard features. The cabin is roomy and adding appeal to it is an intuitive infotainment system. However, its cargo space is slightly less than the Taos.
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos, if any of you haven’t noticed yet, is the only German offering in this segment. Considering it’s a German build, the pricing is pretty neat. The Taos already excels with its interior, fuel economy, cargo space, and its attractive design. This car can make up as the best compromise for people who want something like a Tiguan but not a Tiguan.
