Volvo’s S60 was a rather late introduction in a rapidly growing segment. But even though it took its sweet time to adjust to the market, the S60 now seems to be a fitting alternative to the revered German sedans.
Volvo’s S60 was a rather late introduction in a rapidly growing segment. But even though it took its sweet time to adjust to the market, the S60 now seems to be a fitting alternative to the revered German sedans. Representing Swedish craftsmanship in its finest avatar, the Volvo S60 has all the bells and whistles you would expect in a compact luxury sedan that is priced at just over $39,000. It is technologically advanced, luxuriously appointed, and sleekly styled.
At a price difference of $3,000 from the base Momentum trim, the Inscription trim is a worthy option. It adds features like a hands-free liftgate, rear conditioning system, and quad-zone climate control system, and additionally, we recommend opting for the Protection and Protection Premier Package.

With the discontinuation of the T6 engine from the lineup, the options to choose from seem to have reduced. Yet, you do get a myriad of customization options to choose from. Starting at $39,290, the Volvo S60 is available in three trim levels namely the B5 Momentum, B5 Inscription, and B5 R-Design. The B5 moniker is suggestive of the new mild-hybrid engine that sits under the hood. It gets a dose of standard features including cruise control, cloth upholstery, and interior air filtration. In terms of package options, the base trim gets a total of five options, while the Inscription and R-Design do not have access to the Premier Package, thanks to their added set of features.

The 2022 Volvo S60 now features the similar 2.0L inline-4 unit from last year, but this time around it makes use of a 48-volt mild-hybrid system in conjunction for better efficiency. However, with the new upgrades to the engine, horsepower has fallen to 247hp from 250hp previously, while the torque figures remain unchanged at 258lb.-ft. The engine still gets mated to an 8-speed automatic unit and the duo of the engine and transmission transfer power to either the front or all wheels of the vehicle, depending on the trim you opt for.
The 2022 Volvo S60 sprints from 0-60 mph in just around 6 seconds, which feels quick and potent for a compact luxury sedan. While its quarter-mile timings are not yet known, its top speed of 130 MPH is a little less for its segment. Nonetheless, the Swedish sedan’s oneness lies in its comfortable ride quality. The new mild-hybrid system is extremely efficient and the move from gasoline to electric or vice-versa is buttery-smooth. In addition, the steering has ample feedback, the body roll is well contained, and the regenerative braking works wonders for the vehicle. Additionally, the unibody structure allows for smart weight reduction which helps in improving the ride quality. However, our only complaint in an otherwise finely-curated vehicle is that the brakes do lack a distinct bite to them and consequently, feel a bit too mushy when pressed hard.

In comparison with its competitors, the Audi A4 is the only other sedan in the segment that makes use of a mild-hybrid system to power its performance. However, it produces considerably lower outputs. On the other hand, the BMW 3-Series is the most powerful option in the segment and is good for 255hp and 295 lb.-ft of torque. It is also the quickest in and records just 5.3 seconds to the 60mph mark, making it almost a second and a half quicker than the Cadillac CT-5, which lies on the other end of the spectrum.
In a bid to improve the efficiency of their sedan, Volvo added a mild-hybrid system to the S60 and it does reap benefit out of its new setup. As compared to the outgoing model, the sedan now manages three extra notches of efficiency in all driving conditions. It manages 26 and 35 MPG in the city and on the highway and can average a combined mileage of 30 MPG. Additionally, it gets one of the larger fuel tanks in the segment, which allows it to cover a total range of about 500 miles.

The BMW 3-Series is one of the more frugal options available in the segment and is similar to the S60, despite its noteworthy power outputs. Both the Audi A4 and Cadillac CT-5, however, manage lower outputs on the trot. But the latter does feature the largest fuel tank of 17-gallons, and we expect its range to be higher than Audi’s 440 miles and close to the 500-mile mark like its other contemporaries.
When it comes to interior design and comfort, Volvo has left no stone unturned. To deliver a holistic experience, the S60 has been adequately equipped and feels supremely spacious. The seats reek of comfort and with leather upholstery being available as standard, there is not much you miss out on. Ingress and egress are through wide-opening doors, and once inside the cabin, there is no feeling of claustrophobia, whatsoever. Both at the front and rear, there is no dearth of space, and even taller passengers will find themselves comfortably seated in the rear seats.
However, the Volvo S60’s frustrating and unintuitive cabin seems to be a let-down. The combination of touchscreen compatibility and physical knobs seems to be confusing when on the go. But in no way does it translate into the system being underequipped. The S60 comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard and additionally adds a Sensus Navigation system.

Each sedan in comparison here has a standard seating capacity of five passengers. However, it is the amount of space available to the passengers that creates a distinction. While the Audi A4 and BMW 3-Series have similar space as the Volvo in both the rows, it is the Cadillac CT-5 that has the most commodious cabin on offer. Yet its comfort levels fail to match with its German or Swedish rivals. Even in terms of cargo capacity, it is bested by BMW and Audi, with the former leading the segment with a total trunk volume of 17 cubic feet.
Some of the standout interior features of the 2022 Volvo S60 include:
In the truest sense, the Volvo S60 seems to be a compact variant of the larger Volvo S90 and borrows several designing cues from its elder sibling and we have no complaints about it. The S60 looks flashy, flamboyant, and luxurious. Though the design has not been changed for some time now, the Thor hammer headlamps at the front and the defined air intakes still look tantalizing. It continues to sport the long-sculpted hood up front, while at the back, the sedan does seem to end abruptly.
However, the S60 is representative of Sweden’s craftsmanship and feels finely curated. Though the taillights do feel overly imposing, they complement the overall aggressive-cum-subtle silhouette of the sedan. It rides on 18-inch wheels as standard and sits adequately high from the ground allowing for an easier ride over uneven road patches.

In comparison, the recently revised BMW 3-Series is the most executive-looking option available on offer. On the other hand, both the Audi and Cadillac have an athletic aura to them. However, in terms of aesthetics, all four sedans in comparison here feel equally pleasing to the eye. But they do differ in terms of their proportions and dimensions.
The Volvo S60 is the heaviest sedan available in the market and weighs around 3,786 lbs. It is as large as most of its competitors but does gain ground over them by sporting the highest ground clearance of 5.8 inches. On the flip side, the Cadillac is the longest sedan in the segment and gets a wheelbase of 116 inches. Both the A4 and 3-Series are relatively smaller and also less wide when compared to their American and Swedish counterparts.
Salient exterior features of the 2022 Volvo S60 include:
Based on the SPA platform that it shares with the larger Volvo S90, XC90, and XC60 models, the Volvo S60 promises to be structurally sound and immensely resilient. It gets a unibody structure that allows for efficient weight reduction and increases the number of crumple zones and impact areas, making it extremely safe during a crash. While 2022 MY of the sedan has not yet been tested by the NHTSA or IIHS, we believe its extensive list of driver-assistance aids and safety features do paint a favorable picture. Some of the standout specifications include:
Amongst the options available in comparison here, the Audi A4 is a household name and you would expect it to be a better performer. While it does manage to be to an extent, the new S60 with its revised engine specifications and efficiency does take lead in the practical aspects. It is quicker and more frugal than its German counterpart and gets a more comprehensive set of safety features at its disposal. Even the interior and cargo space of both these sedans are equally matched and the only aspect where the A4 does manage to gain ascendancy is by virtue of its intuitive and tech-savvy infotainment system.
Unlike the other German sedan in comparison, the BMW 3-Series is an exquisite package that combines luxury with performance. It produces the highest power and torque outputs in the segment and emerges as the quickest option as well. Yet it does not succumb to the notion of lower efficiency and stands neck and neck with the Volvo when efficiency is concerned. Having undergone an overhaul recently, the BMW sedan looks enticing both on the inside and outside. It gets an ergonomic cabin design and manages to triumph over the S60 with its sizable boot. And so, we would recommend choosing the BMW 3-Series over the Volvo S60, even if it means paying a diminutively higher price.
The Cadillac CT-5 might not be the most sought-after option in the segment, but it does manage to put up a strong face against revered competitors in the segment. Though it fails to be the quickest and most efficient option, the CT-5 is the most commodious vehicle available in the segment. It gets a spacious cabin and with a wheelbase longer than all of its rivals, allowing for better space on the inside. However, considering its price tag and performance, we’d prefer the Volvo S60, any day of the week.
With notable changes introduced with the 2022 MY, the Volvo S60 sedan proves its worth against German competitors. While it might not be a master, the S60 is definitely a jack of all trades. While its reliability and craftsmanship continue to be top-notch, the compact sedan now vaunts a powerful engine that is equally frugal. And at a starting price less than all of its contemporaries, there is no reason we find to veto the Volvo S60.
