Volvo hasn’t always been the go-to brand for people looking to buy a luxury vehicle and buyers tend to overlook it and generally prefer German manufacturers.
Volvo hasn’t always been the go-to brand for people looking to buy a luxury vehicle and buyers tend to overlook it and generally prefer German manufacturers. But with the kind of technology and features and equipment that Volvo has on offer, the lineup arguably feels a notch better than similar German offerings. The new Volvo S90 has more power, more space, better features, and obviously better safety.
The Momentum trim is the one to go for since it comes equipped with a considerable amount of features right around the $50,000 mark.

The Momentum trim is the one to go for since it comes equipped with a considerable amount of features right around the $50,000 mark.
The 2022 Volvo S90 gets a new and rather complex power unit. Under the hood of the S90 sits a twin-charged 2.0L inline-4 engine along with a 48-volt mild-hybrid electric starter-generator motor. The engine is mated to an 8-speed transmission and power as standard goes to all the wheels. The engine makes 308 horses and 310 lb-ft of torque combined.
The most unique aspect of Volvo’s engine is the instant torque delivery. The twin-charging and mild-hybrid setup are all being employed to eliminate turbo lag and deliver torque at the dab of the pedal. And you do get a sudden boost in torque as soon as you step on the gas. The car might not be all that fast but the way the torque builds up and the way the car pulls away when you floor the pedal is something very different than you’d normally find on other cars.
Get behind the wheel, turn the engine on, get going and that’s when you’ll realize how well the S90 drives. The power delivery is instantaneous and you cannot complain about that. With the standard all-wheel-drive configuration there’s always enough traction on all four wheels and the car remains planted while making high-speed turns. The steering wheel is well-weighted and is quite precise. There’s a good amount of feedback and that’s a very desirable characteristic. The suspensions are on the softer side and they absorb potholes and bumps really well.
The S90 is a large car and yet it is pretty quick off the straight line. It goes from rest to 60 MPH in about 5.8 seconds and hits the quarter-mile mark in about 14.2 seconds. The top speed of the car has been electronically limited to 130 MPH but Volvo says that it can go even faster.
The S90 gets a pretty strong set of brakes. The S90 travels about 115 feet before it comes to rest when brakes are hit at 60 MPH. This is a heavy car and bringing a car that weighs over 4000 lbs+ to a full stop under 120 feet from 60 MPH is just very impressive. The S90 is a mild hybrid and that means it gets regenerative brakes. Thus, every time you step on the brake pedal, the kinetic energy of the vehicle is converted to electrical energy, and the batteries are recharged.

Interestingly, the Genesis G80 is the fastest car in the competition while it’s the Volvo that has the highest power numbers. It makes 300 horses and pips the Volvo S90 in terms of straight-line acceleration by about a tenth of a second. The BMW and the Audi also have decent acceleration numbers but they all are slower than the Genesis and the Volvo by a few tenths of a second.
The S90 delivers pretty decent fuel economy numbers. In the city, it can go for about 23 miles on a gallon of gas while on the highway it can go for about 31 MPG. The luxury sedan gets an EPA rating of 26 MPG which is quite good considering the size, shape, and weight of this car.

The Volvo, Genesis, and the Audi all have similar fuel economy figures owing to their power plants and respective weights while the Bimmer gets the most out of its power plant. It gets nearly 504 miles in combined driving conditions which is a sliver better than the Audi and is a tremendous gain on the Volvo.
The interior of the 2022 Volvo S90 is simply plush and luxurious. All the materials and bits are of high quality and the cabin just has a very rich appeal to it. There are a few fancy bits as well like the leather-wrapped gear selector and the knurled start-stop knob. There’s also a knurled rolling pin for the driving mode selector and these are a few unique bits in the car that you’ll not find on any other vehicle. The only downside though, is that there’s a lot of piano black trim around the dash and the center console tends to pick up fingerprints no matter how dry and clean your hands are.
The seats are quite snug and comfortable, both at the front and the back and you can slump in on them easily. The seats come wrapped in leather and offer good support and perhaps the nicest in the segment. The amount of space is great, there’s plenty of head, shoulder, and legroom and Volvo has taken care that no passenger will remain short of space. There’s a good amount of luggage space on offer as well and you can load in about 13.5 cubic feet of luggage in the trunk. There are a few storage spaces on the inside as well and those include cup holders at the front and at the back, pockets on all 4 doors, and a storage bin in the center console.
The 2022 S90 comes equipped with Volvo’s Sensus Connect infotainment system. As a part of the system, you get a large, vertically stacked 9-inch touchscreen display. The infotainment interface isn’t the most intuitive and you have to navigate through multiple menus to reach out to some basic, simple functions. The 10-speaker audio system is crisp though while the optional Bang & Olufsen system is even better.

The 2022 Volvo S90 has the largest cabin in the competition and has the highest passenger space on offer. The legroom on the second row especially is massive and no other car will allow you to stretch your legs out quite like this one. The BMW on the other hand has the largest trunk on offer and can swallow about 14 cubic feet of luggage.
Key interior features:
The 2022 Volvo S90 is arguably the most handsome car in the segment and looks absolutely stunning and has all the potential to stand out in the crowd. The most striking and distinctive element on the Volvo S90, well, obviously is its Thor’s Hammer LED headlights. Those look very cool and have been winning hearts ever since Volvo introduced them on their vehicle lineup. There’s the large vertically slated, chrome surround grille that again, looks distinctive and gives the car's face a lot of attitude and class.
The S90 is a large car and spans just about a hair over 200 inches. Apart from the distinctive face, Volvo has tried and kept the rest of the design rather simple but you cannot call it bland. At the back, there are those C-shaped LED taillights that look good and are very unique. On the whole, it is a very good-looking car and has all the ability to have buyers sold just for the way it looks.

We think that the Volvo is the best looking of the lot but the others are not bad either. The Genesis for instance has a very distinctive charm and its aura is very different from the other European sedans. Its large grille along with the split headlight cluster looks very different from the rest and it certainly will turn a lot of heads around. In terms of sheer size, the Volvo is the largest of the lot while it’s the Audi that’s the smallest.
Some of the key exterior features of the 2022 Volvo S90 are:
Safety has always been Volvo’s unique selling point and Volvo has been maintaining the highest standard of safety for decades now. The 2022 S90 hasn’t yet been tested and rated but 2021 has been rated by the IIHS. The 2021 Volvo S90 is IiHS’ ‘TOP SAFETY PICK+’ which is pretty impressive. Safety isn’t something that you have to be worried about when you’re traveling inside of a Volvo.
Some of the key safety features of the 2022 Volvo S90 are:
The Genesis G80 is the latest entrant into the mid-size luxury sedan business and is a very good proposition. It undercuts the competition and is the cheapest of the lot while delivering the highest power and performance numbers. However, in terms of passenger space, comfort and safety it is no match to the Volvo S90. Thus, we would recommend the Volvo over the Genesis but if you want something that isn’t mainstream, then the Genesis is not a bad buy either.
Well, if you compare these cars in terms of luxury and equipment, the Audi clearly has the upper hand. In terms of overall cabin design and feature, the Audi A6 just feels superior to the Volvo S90. However, the Volvo beats the Audi in terms of sheer space and safety equipment and is also priced quite low. Thus, our pick here in the competition would be the Volvo simply because it is safer, spacious and in our opinion looks better than the Audi.
The only area where the BMW does better than the Volvo is in terms of fuel economy. The BMW’s driving dynamics always have a slightly sportier character while the Volvo feels much more mature and well-mannered from behind the wheel. However, the BMW is pricier than the Volvo and also is no match to the Swedish sedan in terms of safety and passenger space. Again, we think the Volvo is a better package here but if you need a car that can offer a dynamic and sporty driving experience, then it’s the BMW where you should be putting your money.
The 2022 Volvo S90 does well on pretty much all the fronts. It has a potent engine, it drives well, delivers good fuel economy numbers, is spacious on the inside, and most importantly, it is a very safe vehicle to travel in. All these factors make the S90 a very compelling proposition and if you’re in the market looking for a luxury sedan, the S90 is the one that you should highly be considering.
