Comparative Analysis against Competition

As standard, the Ford 2024 Explorer is powered by a 2.3-liter 300 hp turbo-4 motor which does the 0-60 MPH sprint in 6 seconds. The sportier Explorer ST gets a mighty 3-liter twin-turbo 400 hp V6 engine that is capable of doing 0 to 60 MPH in just 5.2 seconds. It also gets a higher top speed of 146 MPH but the towing capacity remains constant at 5,300 lbs. The MPG rating of 21/28 MPG in city/highway conditions for the standard powertrain of the Explorer 2024 is pretty decent but the twin-turbo engine brings it down to 18/25 MPG.

Buyers no longer have the option to opt for the Explorer hybrid model as it is now limited to just the police interceptor model. There are no changes made to the exterior or the interior at all and buyers get an option of 7 exterior color options and 2 interior color options. The cabin comes loaded with features to the brim and offers a cargo space of 18.2 cu-ft even with all seats up. The Explorer scores great in terms of safety, having received a perfect 5-star rating from the NHTSA and a "Top Safety Pick" accolade from the IIHS for the previous model year.

The reliability rating of 80/100 from J.D. Power is just on par with the segment standard which is led by the likes of the Buick Enclave. Expect the 5-year cost of ownership to be around $52,450 which again is on the higher side of the spectrum. Since there is no change to the Explorer's prices, finance offers start at a monthly payment of $619 at 2.9% APR for a 60-month period with a $3,836 down payment. Lease deals begin at $553/month for a tenure of 36 months for an annual mileage of 10,500 miles with $4,338 due at signing.

Buying Advice

The 2024 Ford Explorer Limited is the most popular trim of the lineup and at a price tag of $47,420, it offers great value to its buyers. Opting for the 4WD drivetrain adds just $2,000 to the price tag but adds a lot of practicality to the SUV.

At this price point, the Explorer gets you a lot of goodies like ventilated front seats, power-folding and heated second-row seats, leather upholstery, front parking sensors, chrome exterior trim, and larger 20-inch alloy wheels.

Overview

Last updated back in 2020, the Ford Explorer carries forward unchanged this year as Ford promises to give this popular SUV an overhaul for the 2025 model year. The 2024 Ford Explorer was spotted testing undisguised sometime ago and it didn't look any different than the outgoing model because there aren't any changes at all. Check out the video below by "Ben Hardy" for a closer real-world look at the Explorer SUV.

Prices for the 2024 Explorer start at $36,760 excluding the $1,595 destination fee and is available for sale in 8 trim configurations. This means Ford has decided against hiking up the prices this year and we hope there won't be a nationwide recall as seen very recently. While the release date is yet to be announced, the 2024 model year Explorer is expected to hit the market by the end of 2023. The much-awaited next-generation Ford Explorer has been postponed and is expected to arrive by the summer of 2024.

Not all trims are built equal, however, as there are 2 powertrains on offer. The 2.3L turbocharged Inline-4 makes 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 makes 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. Both powertrains get an option for a 4WD drivetrain and there are plenty of creature comforts on offer inside its spacious cabin. All these aspects make it a formidable force in the mid-size SUV segment against the likes of Honda Pilot, Kia TellurideNissan Pathfinder, and Toyota Highlander
