For those who prefer riding with minimal investment, the basic XL trim will do the job. However, for long-term and comfortable travel, the XLT will prove a better choice, since it includes nearly all the important features that are necessary for a comfortable cargo mover.

The 2016 Ford Transit Connect comes with two engines: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 169 hp and 171 lb.-ft. of torque. There is also a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder that makes 178 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, but this engine is only available for the short-wheelbase variants of the van. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic that sends power to the front two wheels. The steering is especially impressive, which offers an excellent road feel like most Ford vehicles, requiring little effort to steer. The Transit Connect does not have the performance offered by other V6 powered minivans, like the Dodge Grand Caravan and Toyota Sienna. The turbocharged engine would be better recommended for this exact purpose but unfortunately is not available with the long-wheelbase variants.

The Ford Transit Connect van's 2.5-liter engine has a fuel efficiency of 22 mpg combined, with 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, which is a little better than larger V6 powered minivan competitors. The turbocharged 1.6-liter has fuel efficiency of 25 mpg combined, with 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

Ford’s Transit Connect is at par with the rest of the rivals when it comes to economical driving. The RAM Promaster gets the better of the three with a more refined powertrain, but the major difference is in the size of the vehicles. Compared to the Ford, the latter is a bit lighter and smaller in dimensions. Although, there is no difference in the way these two haul.

The first thing you notice inside the Transit Connect is that the quality of plastics used in the interiors is not good, not even compared to the competitors. But as you give it a thought, the van is just another commercial vehicle. So, cost-cutting is an integral part of their design, no matter how they achieve it. Hence if the buyer wants a nice interior, the Titanium variant's leather upholstery is more likely to do a better job. The interior and all rows of seats are very spacious, especially the headroom.

If it's the cargo you're looking to haul, the short-wheelbase cargo van offers 103.9 cubic feet behind the front seats, while the long-wheelbase version's larger cargo hold can swallow 128.6 cubic feet.
