About 2016 Ford Transit Connect

3.7

Overall Rating

The exceptionally refined and full-size cargo van Ford Transit Van is there to impress you with its fuel economy and ease of maneuverability. 2016 Ford Transit Cargo Van starts at $23,65 and gets a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine which is very capable but a V8 is sorely missed on a full-size van.

The Ford Transit Connect was developed by Ford Europe initially for the European market. It is a compact panel van built on an expressly commercial vehicle platform. It was first introduced in Europe in October 2002 as a dedicated van and replaced the car-derived vans based on Escort and Fiesta. The North American market got the Ford Transit Connect in 2009 when the company started importing it that year for the 2010 model year. Since its launch in North America, the market has warmed up to the idea of a small van and have realized that a small van or wagon can be useful to move cargo around for smaller businesses or even to travel with a family.

Considering to maximize the commercial output, it is advisable to opt for the long-wheelbase version of the XL or XLT trim. For those who prefer riding with minimal investment, the basic XL trim will do the job. However, for long-term and comfortable travel, the XLT will prove a better choice, since it includes nearly all the important features that are necessary for a comfortable cargo mover.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2016 Ford Transit Connect Cargo Van is available in two wheelbase sizes and in three different trim levels: the XL, XLT, and Titanium. The XLT trim comes with the option for seating five or seven, whereas the XL and Titanium wagons are seven-seaters as standard. The base XL wagon is long-wheelbase only and gets 16-inch steel wheels, gray-colored grille, bumpers and side moldings, keyless entry, air conditioning, vinyl upholstery and covering on the floor, built-in hooks to tie down cargo, an overhead storage shelf, a flat-folding passenger seat, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, powered windows, powered door locks, and four-speaker audio system.

The next level XLT trim gets body-colored bumpers, fog lamps, power adjusting and heated mirrors, rear privacy glass, cloth upholstery, driver lumbar adjustable seat, multi-function display, cruise control, a rearview camera, and a CD player. The XLT wagon comes in both short and long wheelbase and available with a base sticker price of $24,200.

Engine and Performance
6.9/10

The 2016 Ford Transit Connect comes with two engines: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 169 hp and 171 lb.-ft. of torque. There is also a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder that makes 178 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, but this engine is only available for the short-wheelbase variants of the van. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic that sends power to the front two wheels. The steering is especially impressive, which offers an excellent road feel like most Ford vehicles, requiring little effort to steer. The ride, on the other hand, feels bumpy, and the noise from the suspension tends to travel to the cabin.

The Transit Connect does not have the performance offered by other V6 powered minivans, like the Dodge Grand Caravan and Toyota Sienna. Even so, this Ford van feels significantly lighter and more nimble in the city traffic. This can be very useful to get in and out of tight spots in the city. The turbocharged engine would be better recommended for this exact purpose but unfortunately is not available with the long-wheelbase variants.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

The Ford Transit Connect van's 2.5-liter engine has a fuel efficiency of 22 mpg combined, with 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, which is a little better than larger V6 powered minivan competitors. Ford’s Transit Connect is at par with the rest of the rivals when it comes to economical driving. The RAM Promaster gets the better of the three with a more refined powertrain, but the major difference is in the size of the vehicles. Compared to the Ford, the latter is a bit lighter and smaller in dimensions. Although, there is no difference in the way these two haul.

Interior
5.0/10

The first thing you notice inside the Transit Connect is that the quality of plastics used in the interiors is not good, not even compared to the competitors. But as you give it a thought, the van is just another commercial vehicle. So, cost-cutting is an integral part of their design, no matter how they achieve it. Hence if the buyer wants a nice interior, the Titanium variant's leather upholstery is more likely to do a better job. The interior and all rows of seats are very spacious, especially the headroom.

Exterior
6.9/10

The Ford Transit Connect looks very much like a cross between a Van and a Wagon. The vehicle is in its second generation and received its last facelift in 2014, and the new design adopted Ford's Kinetic Design language, which is seen across nearly all Ford vehicles. The Transit Connect is available in two wheelbases and can seat five or seven people depending on the wheelbase. It can be equipped with 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and the XLT and Titanium trims are available with body-colored bumpers. There is also an option for a rear liftgate in place of the double rear doors.
