2011 BMW 7 Series Review

  • Improved iDrive system
  • Variety of engine options

  • Lowly standard equipment

Exhibiting opulence from every angle, the 7 Series sedan is a pinnacle of German excellence and exuberance.

Overview

The 7 Series is one of the most mesmerizing squads of sedans developed by BMW. Exhibiting opulence from every angle, the 7 Series sedan is a pinnacle of German excellence and exuberance. The brand has benefited from this franchise since the 1990s, with a new generation bringing with itself an indispensable burst of power and technology.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The 7 Seriessedans are offered in 740i, 740Li, 750i, 750Li, and 760Li trims. The Li indicates the extended-wheelbase body style, while the 750 models can be equipped with xDrive, which is all-wheel drive. There are plenty of permutations and combinations to play along with the BMW 7 Series, and we bet that getting familiar with any one of these in itself is a pretty herculean task, thanks to the equally extravagant list of options and features that encompass this leisure-oriented sedan. Speaking of which, additional stand-alone items available on all 7 Series models include a rear-seat entertainment system, a head-up display, active cruise control, an infrared night vision system, extended leather trim, special interior color/trim schemes, and ceramic-lined controls.

We Recommend:

Based on our in-depth analysis, we believe it is better to look out for the V8 versions of the 7 Series and equip the same with some optional packages if required. It obviously gets a plethora of standard features, but there are some that can only be obtained explicitly. The V12 is absolutely out of question, as the sticker price seems too high for the performance it offers.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

Well, well! Where should we start? The BMW has three different options of pure gasoline engines in place for the 7 Series sedans. Let's begin with the already known options - the V8 and the V12. The 2011 BMW 750i and 750Li are powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque.

As with the 750, a six-speed automatic transmission is standard along with driver-adjustable settings for the throttle, transmission programming, steering, suspension, and stability control intervention. Meanwhile, the top-end 760Li trim adorns the 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 good for 535 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive are standard.

Now coming to the new powertrain in the house, the 3.0L twin-turbo inline-6. Judging by its size, this engine is destined to produce somewhere around 315 HP and 330 lb-ft. of torque. It matches with a six-speed automatic transmission and all the standard features on the 750i. However, this naive setup is only available to be bought with the lowest in line 740i models. For its size, the engine does well to put up a battle against strong competitors like theAudi A8 Sedan. However, the difference in power is still perceivable. When comparing with the competition, the base engine fails to put up with the rivals and stands at the back in the power output.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Offered with three different powertrains, it is possible to engage into one based on individual needs. EPA-estimated fuel economy for the 750i version stands at 15 mpg city/22 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined. Opting for the Li and/or xDrive lowers those numbers by roughly 1-2 mpg. On the contrary, the V12 that BMW claims go from 0-60 MPH in 4.5 seconds strives hard to put some good numbers on paper. EPA-estimated fuel economy for the V12 is 13/19/15 for city/hwy/combined.

Numbers on the V6 are looking much better than the other two, although the use of natural aspiration could have produced even better figures. According to the EPA, the six-cylinder model produces 13 MPG in the cities, while out on the highways, the figure goes upto 25 MPG. Still, as compared to Audi A8 and theLexus LS 460, the numbers are quite on the lower side. Whereas, against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, it is slightly better.

Interior
9.9/10

As BMW's flagship offering, the 7 Series represents the company's pinnacle of luxury, comfort, and cutting-edge technology. Supple leather and rich wood accents adorn almost every surface, and the available "multicontour" front seats ensure comfort for virtually any body type. The rear seats are similarly accommodating for taller adults, and the extended-wheelbase versions offer even more legroom (by about 6 inches) and slightly increased headroom.

Available rear-seat heating and even a massage feature should satisfy the most demanding of passengers. The cabin of the 2011 BMW 7 Series is more user-friendly than its much-maligned predecessor. Gone are the days when occupants would rather sit in silence than navigate the over-complicated iDrive system menus.

The cavernous interior room comes with either of the wheelbase options of the 7er. Long-wheelbase cars have chauffeur-style room for front and rear-seat passengers. The cabin has far more room than you might expect, based on the overall sizes of previous 7 Series cars. This one's so vast, it's closer in size to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class in the interior room--and the S-Class only comes to the states in its long-wheelbase form. Major interior features include-

  • Interior Active Charcoal Air Filter
  • Keyless Ignition
  • Remote Window Operation
  • Head-Up Display
  • 14 -Way Power Front Seats
  • Multi-Level Heating Front Seats
  • Rear Ventilation Ducts With Fan Control

2011 BMW 7 Series Infotainment:

Just like the interiors, the cockpit is a win too; with the chaotic mix of buttons, screens, and knobs reduced where possible and regrouped into a more logical mien. The instruments can be completely blacked out when needed, otherwise, they glimmer softly amid densely grained wood trim, ceramic-finished knobs, and the futuristic controllers that direct the transmission and driving dynamics, as well as the iDrive system.

Other features are more intuitive and downright lush. Chief among them is BMW's voice-activated navigation system, which outputs its data on a wide, gorgeous 10.2-inch high-resolution display and stores its maps on an 80GB hard drive. If you're tired of wading through iDrive, you can always Google a destination and send it to your car's GPS live from the Web. Few key features include-

  • 10.2-inch high-resolution display
  • 80GB hard drive
  • voice-activated navigation system
  • 205 Watts Stereo Output
  • 10 Total Speakers
  • Surround Audio Surround Audio (Discrete)

Exterior
9.0/10

The 7 Series is almost a knockout, with a much more relaxed silhouette and more exciting proportions of metal to glass. The shoulders fit just right; the trunk has been smoothed over and its taillights more tightly integrated. In the front, the twin-kidney grille even looks pleased, split into a wider grin atop a deeper, dipped air dam.

The "Hofmeister" kink at the D-pillar and doors gives the 7er its signature sublime touch of sport. The long-wheelbase versions don't tip the shape out of balance at all, with a small stretch in glass areas in the rear doors.

As long as the 7 Series seems from the outside, on paper, it is a completely different story. TheMercedes-Benz S-Class remains the strongest competitor for dimensional tolerances against the BMW. Even the Audi is lengthy and wide but lacks a substantial wheelbase. The 7 Series has a much wider track, thus ensuring a more complacent ride. When comparing the curb weight, Mercedes is the heaviest at 4,455 lbs. Major exterior features include-

  • 19" Forged Radial-Spoke Wheels
  • Performance Tires
  • Shadowline Exterior Trim
  • Aerodynamic Kit
  • Halogen Free-Foam Headlights
  • Front and rear Fog/driving lights
  • Windshield wipers - rain sensing
  • Sliding and tilting glass Sunroof

Safety
9.9/10

Obviously, a vehicle as expensive as the 7 Series cannot be crash-tested by the NHTSA and has neither been taken up for inspection by the IIHS. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes (with brake assist, brake fade compensation, brake drying, and a brake standby feature), stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags, front knee airbags, side curtain airbags, and active front head restraints.

In Edmund's brake testing, the 750i came to a stop from 60 mph in an excellent 112 feet. The 750Li was about the same. Optional safety features include adaptive cruise control, rear and side-view cameras, and infrared night vision with pedestrian detection that displays the images either in the main dash display or in the head-up display (if so equipped). Major standout safety features include-

  • Passenger Head Restraint Whiplash Protection System
  • Cornering Lights
  • Stability Control
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Traction Control
  • Electronic Brakeforce Distribution
  • Adaptive Headlights
  • Emergency Braking Assist
  • Post-Collision Safety System

Final Verdict

TheBMW 7 Series has been known less for the style icon it is on the roads, and perhaps more for the comfort, quality, and state-of-the-art idiosyncrasies it adorns. Back in 2009, the brand did an excellent job in the aesthetic department, when BMW updated the looks of the 7 Series sedan. Now, amid its fifth generation, the 7 Series still continues to build upon its reputation as a top-of-the-class executive sedan. For all that is at stake, the 2011 7 Series is definitely a go for all those interested in it.
