Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The BMW 5 Series is offered in three main trim levels and three powertrain options. Interior features include dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats with four-way power lumbar, driver memory functions, leatherette premium vinyl upholstery, and a power tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel. The 535i trim gets a more powerful turbocharged I-6 motor and adds to the features of the base trim. The features on offer are 18-inch wheels and leather upholstery. We Recommend

We would recommend you the 528i trim with any optiuonal feature of your choice. If you seek more performance along with a the practicality of a daily driver, the 535i trim would suit you the most.

Engine and Performance
8.3/10

The BMW 528i is powered by a 2.0liter turbocharged four-cylinder motor that is new for the current model year. The motor is tuned to generate a maximum of 240 horsepower and 260lb-ft of maximum torque. The powertrain generates a decent amount of power and torque but the hefty sedan feels reluctant to pull away quickly.

But you won’t feel the lack of power in relaxed driving scenarios and city driving conditions and the four-pot is quite fuel efficient too. Surprisingly though, the sedan sprints to 60mph from a standstill within 6.4 seconds, a commendable time for a full-size luxury sedan powered by a small four-cylinder motor. The fantastic 8-speed automatic transmission does an excellent job and keeps the motor relaxed while maximizing performance and fuel efficiency.

The Jaguar XF has a beefy powertrain right from its base model and dishes out some impressive performance figures as well. The Audi A6 is the least powerful one among the three on the list and comes with an unimpressive CVT transmission.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The four-cylinder powered 528i returns some impressive fuel economy figures considering the luxury status of the vehicle. The city mileage of the sedan is rated at 23mpg while the highway mileage is rated at 34mpg. The combined mileage stands at 27mpg.

The Jaguar XF returns some expected fuel economy figures considering its powertrain and power figures. The Audi A6 disappoints the most with its lackluster fuel economy figures despite having lower power and torque figures than the 528i.

Interior
9.1/10

The overall design of the 528i is nothing fancy or flashy but will appeal to both the driver and the passenger. The dashboard layout is pretty straight forward and all the controls are within the driver’s reach while driving. The center of the dashboard is adorned by the iDrive screen that looks quite elegant.

The overall quality of the materials feel quite premium and the fit & finish levels are just exemplary. The front and the rear seats are supremely comfortable and are designed to provide superior comfort levels on long trips. The only downside of the sedna is its below average trunk space of 14cu-ft.

The Jaguar XF has a plush and comfortable cabin too but offers a lower headroom for both the front and the rear passengers. The Audi A6 has a comfortable and premium cabin too but falls short in front of the 528i in terms of headroom.

Infotainment

The BMW 528i comes with the brand’s fantastic iDrive interface and offers several entertainment features too. The features include Bluetooth, a 10-speaker sound system with a CD player, HD radio, an auxiliary audio jack, and an iPod/USB audio interface. Stepping up to the 535i trim gets you a navigation system with real-time traffic and a larger iDrive screen.

Exterior
9.0/10

The exterior styling of the BMW 5 Series is heavily understated and simple, somewhat like its interior. The contoured hood looks more elegant than before and the low-mounted kidney grille flanked by the LED headlamp units with beautiful ring-shaped LED running lights gives the font end a distinctive sporty appeal. The rear end looks quite appealing too with dynamically shaped LED tail light units.

The Jaguar XF wears a more aggressive design than the Beemer and has prominent British styling elements all around the exterior of the car. The Audi A6 has an aggressive front end with a smooth and flowing overall design language.

Safety
9.8/10

As expected, the BMW 5 Series earned some top safety scores. The NHTSA gave it a top 5-star rating while the IIHS gave it their best possible “Good” rating. The standard safety aids onboard the sedan are stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, active front head restraints, and BMW Assist emergency communications system.

  • Child Safety Locks
  • Night Vision (Optional)

Final Verdict

The BMW 5 Series is a strong contender in the full-size luxury sedan segment with its superb comfort and an extremely feature-rich interior coupled with commendable driving dynamics. Overall, it poses as a great alternative to some of its main rivals such as the Audi A6 and the Jaguar XF.
