Overall Rating
The 2015 X5 gets an improved transmission which aids in improving the performance and fuel economy ever so slightly. With the prices starting at $54,895 for the base rear-wheel-drive trim, it is one of the more expensive options in the segment and yet is the popular choice.
In the early 2,000s, the BMW X5 was one of the very few luxury SUVs available in the market and many even consider it as a foundation stone for today’s luxury SUV segment. Today the X5 itself is available with two engine options, while there is also an X5 M to cover the performance side of the SUV. Buying a large SUV without the all-wheel-drive would not make justice to the car and hence the xDrive 35i should be the preferred choice as it also features most of the necessary luxury features and some more and the higher trim elevates the price considerably.

The 2015 BMW X5 is available with three engine options, a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine and a 4.4L 445 hp twin-turbo V8 engine, and a diesel mill producing 255 hp. The base 3.0-liter engine produces 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels as standard through an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Both the Audi Q7 and the Mercedes ML 350 are more affordable than the X5 but both have a lower engine output. The X5 is, therefore, faster than the other two as both are almost a second slower than the X5. the quarter-mile times are more comparable, but again the X5 is the clear winner with Mercedes being the slowest of the lot.
The X5 is a large SUV and hence expecting high fuel efficiency would not be appropriate but the X5 is pretty efficient for the segment. The EPA rates the 2015 X5 for 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg out on the highway, while the combined fuel economy is rated for 22 mpg, thanks to the tweaks to the transmission. The gas tank is on the smaller side at 22.4 gallons, and yet the X5 manages to be driven for around 600 miles out on the highway.

The BMW is the most frugal SUV in this comparison, while the Audi Q7 has the highest fuel consumption. It also features the largest fuel tank to compensate for that, which brings the driving range on par with the competition. The aging ML 350 also returns decent fuel economy figures which are better than the Q7.
The X5 offers an interior that has a neat layout, is neatly built, has high-quality materials, and offers great comfort and luxury. The leather upholstery is pretty impressive, whereas the seats themselves are pretty comfortable and offer adequate support for occupants of almost all sizes.
The adjustable and multi-contour seats are the most comfortable seats that one can find in this segment while it is sufficient for all the passengers throughout the cabin. Although, the rear seats aren’t exactly spacious as per industry standards as competitors offer more legroom both at the front and rear.

At the front, the Audi Q7 offers the best legroom, whereas the X5 has wider seats and has a superior headroom. The Mercedes ML 350 offers the best overall space in this comparison as the X5 has limited legroom at the back while the Q7 lacks space as it has to make space for an additional third row of seats. Major interior features include-
The X5 features the classic gauge cluster along with a large central screen which offers a great combination of old and new inside the cabin. The iDrive infotainment system has crisp graphics, well-designed layouts, and although it is pretty intuitive to use for most parts, it does need a few more clicks and turns on the control knob than what one might need in other infotainment systems from the rivals.
The touchpad controls are pretty easy to use and also features handwritten navigation inputs for ease of use. Few key infotainment features available with the SUV are-
The X5 has a typical luxury SUV silhouette and looks dashing from all angles. The front offers the signature BMW kidney grille which is flanked by sleek headlamps with halo headlights that is another significant aspect of the BMW brand.
The smooth and strong character lines of the car offer an imposing look, while the large rims and upright body stance help you make a bold entry wherever you go.

Since the Q7 offers an additional row of seats, it is longer than the other two and also weighs considerably more. It is also wider than the X5 and the ML 350 and has sufficient ground clearance to glide over most obstacles comfortably. The X5 too offers similar ground clearance and is marginally larger than the Mercedes, in terms of dimensions. Major exterior features include-
There is no lack of shortage of safety equipment inside the BMW X5, and the 5-star rating rated by the NHTSA in their crash test report is an indication of the high safety standards and precision German engineering implemented by the BMW X5.
The IIHS has not conducted a comprehensive crash test but it scored well in the aspects it was tested in. There are quite a few safety features packed in the 2015 BMW X5, and some of them are listed below.
