2015 Jeep Compass Review

Pros

  • Flip-down tailgate speakers (Optional )
  • Above-average off-road capability
  • Frugal Pricing

Cons

  • Marginal fuel economy
  • Poor handling
  • Underpowered engine options

The age-old design and the lack of keeping up with age have definitely affected the ratings of the Compass within its segment. Except for pricing and better ability to handle off-roading, this car doesn’t have many things going for it.

Overview

Apart from some very minimal changes, the 2015 Jeep Compass carries over from its predecessor, yet again. Available in four different trims as earlier, the 2015 Jeep Compass starts at an MSRP of $18,995 and is available with either FWD or 4WD drivetrain. An available manual transmission also remains consistent for 2015.

While a refreshed Compass is said to appear late in 2017, for 2015, Jeep's compact SUV gains some optional features and a new green paint scheme. As a primary member of the compact-SUV segment, the Jeep Compass brings some serious capability at an affordable price. However, it's not as polished as some rivals like the Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2015 Jeep Compass comes with three trims and two sub-trims, which are the Altitude Edition and High Altitude Edition. These sub trims can be chosen to add extra features to the trim you have already chosen. The Compass is not the most fancily equipped SUV in its segment and has started to show its age amidst the competition.

The different trims of the SUV ensure that the customers with different budgets get to choose the right model for themselves. However, if you want the base model, you can be assured that it comes with all the basic stuff. As you go up the trims, the aesthetic as well as other features becomes highlighted.

We Recommend

We recommend you to go with the Latitude trim as it has almost all the features to keep you comfortable under different conditions. The heated seats available with it will be a blessing to have on a cold morning and will ensure that you enjoy some good off-roading even at the coldest temperatures.

Engine and Performance
5.4/10

The base engine offered along with the Compass is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 158hp and 141 pound-feet of torque. This engine is lethargic to accelerate into good speeds. The lower trims of the Compass comes with a manual transmission, which makes this engine fun but it doesn’t work as well as the automatic when it goes off-road. On the road, the compass feels rigid and has poor ride quality.

Compared to the competition, the Compass is the least powerful vehicle in the lot with 158hp on tap from the base engine. However, the competition is certainly more powerful and torquey. The lack of power and torque makes the Compass a comparatively slower SUV. Although when comparing the top speed, Jeep is the fastest with a speed of 126 mph.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

If fuel efficiency is one of your concerns, then the Compass just might give you peace of mind, with MPG figures that keep up with the class average. The Compass manages to return 23MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway. The lower fuel efficiency is expected for a car with such a big engine. But unlike most cars, the Compass doesn’t make that much power to explain the lower fuel economy.

The most fuel-efficient car in this segment is the Honda CR-V with 27 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway. The Subaru Forester and the Compass have almost similar MPG figures with a difference of 1MPG in all aspects. The biggest fuel tank belongs to the Subaru and the smallest to the Compass with its 13.6 gallons. However, with better mileage and a comparatively bigger tank, the CR-V has a better range.

Interior
6.1/10

Except for a few changes that were made to the interior of the Compass a few years back, not many changes can be seen in the interior. The use of hard plastics all along the interior continues with this Compass as well.

The front seats are supportive and are comfortable for long journeys, but the rear seats are slightly cramped when it comes to legroom. The interior is otherwise fine and offers enough comfort.

Among the three, the Honda CR-V has the best interior in terms of quality and ergonomics. The Subaru has the least headroom but makes up for it with more legroom. In the rear row, the Jeep has the least legroom of them all, and as a consolation offers the most shoulder room. When comparing the cargo space at the back, the most is offered by Honda CR-V of 35.2 cubic feet. Few standout interior features include-

  • Adjustable Steering Wheel
  • Electrochromic rearview mirror
  • Heated Seats
  • automatic climate control
  • flip down liftgate speaker

How intuitive is the 2018 Audi A7 Premium Plus’s infotainment unit?

The Compass certainly doesn’t have the best of the infotainment system from the base trim. The base trim is pretty barebones with a 4-speaker audio system and minimal connectivity options, but as you climb up the trims, things do change for good but not for the best.

Features like Bluetooth, satellite radio, optional nine-speaker premium audio system, and more are part of the SUV. Few key features are-

  • Bluetooth
  • Satellite radio
  • Four-speaker audio system
  • Navigation
  • Nine-speaker premium audio system(Optional)

Exterior
6.5/10

The car certainly looks old from the outside, with its competition showing off better designs in all aspects, the Compass sure does look bad. The exterior build quality despite its age is strong and has been built to take a pounding.

If you wish to have a better-looking car, then the Compass just might not make the cut, but being cheaper than the competition certainly helps its cause.

The Jeep Compass is the lightest among its competitors, and it certainly gets the benefit of being light, off the pavement. It has the shortest body length as well as width. Aesthetically these measurements may make it look smaller, but in a real-world off-roading scenario, the car can excuse it out of tricky pits and climb easily.

When it comes to ground clearance, Subaru Forester stands tallest to the ground at 8.7 inches. Some of the exterior features are:

  • Tires - Front All-Season
  • Tires - Rear All-Season
  • Aluminum Wheels
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Trailer Hitch Receiver

Safety
7.0/10

The 2015 Jeep Compass is not the safest car you can buy from this segment. It performs adequately in the safety tests conducted by the NHTSA and IIHS though. It scored Good in the side crash test conducted by IIHS and three out of five stars in the frontal crash test and four stars in the rollover test conducted by NHTSA. It comes with all the standard safety features and nothing more. Some standout features in the SUV are-

  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Traction Control
  • Airbags
  • ABS and Drive Traction Control

Final Verdict

Consider buying this car if your daily commute involves off-roading or you like going off-road once in a while, that too while staying on a strict budget. The 2015 Jeep Compass lacks many features to keep up with the age. It doesn’t offer great mileage, nor performance, the transmission is not the best, and interior quality is subpar. So count your choices wisely before buying this car.
