2016 BMW 7 Series Review

Pros

  • Potent engine
  • First-grade ride quality
  • Upmarket cabin build

Cons

  • Expensive price sticker

There have been a lot of changes to the 2016 BMW 7-series, so so much it's all-new for the year. The engine options have been cut down to just two, as compared to the four options the previous year

Overview

If the Rolls-Royce Ghost is called the Palace on Wheels, the BMW 7 Series is rightfully a mansion. Being the brand’s flagship offering, the BMW 7 Series is a cracker of features waiting to explode. The 2016 iteration of the luxury sedan is everything that enthusiasts would have dreamt it to be; a new shape and face, a cogent engine, and fun-to-drive capabilities. The BMW 7 Series has been on the market for a long time now, and ever since its introduction, it has been the buyer’s favorite. Credit to the brand’s value or the uniqueness of the 7 Series’, the luxury sedan is the best bet in a segment that features fierce competitors like the Jaguar XJL and the Audi A8.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2016 BMW 7 Series is available in three different trims that feature two distinct engine options. It runs through a price range that spreads from $81,300 to $94,700 for the top-rack variant. The 7 Series is available both as a rear-wheel-drive and an all-wheel-drive variant. Basic features include a rearview camera, rear parking aid, leather seats, and a hands-free liftgate.

We Recommend

All trims of the BMW 7 Series are adequately potent features filled and will not disappoint the traditional buyer. Your ideal luxury sedan will depend on the number of features you want to pack in your car and the amount of power you expect from it. But if we have to choose, we will go with the 750i trim.

Engine and Performance
8.3/10

Both engine options that the BMW 7 Series offers are potent and deliver unparalleled performance. The base engine which is a 3.0L inline-6 unit is capable of churning out 320hp of power and 330lb.-ft of torque. It manages to boost the car from a still to the 60 MPH mark in 5.1 seconds and in the quarter-mile run clocks 13.7 seconds, making it a joint winner in the segment.

As standard, the BMW uses an 8-speed automatic transmission and is channeled as a rear-wheel-drive. The higher trim, the 750i, and the 750i xDrive feature a rear-wheel and all-wheel-drivetrain, respectively. They come equipped with a common 4.4L V8 engine that is capable of producing 445hp of power and 480lb.-ft of torque.

In comparison, the Jaguar XJL is similar to the BMW 7 Series in all aspects. It clocks similar performance figures and makes use of an identical transmission and engine setup, however, it does deliver high power and torque outputs. In comparison, the Audi A8 is an all-wheel-drive variant. It is the slowest car in the segment and takes 5.8 and 14.2 seconds to the 60 MPH and quarter-mile mark, respectively.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The BMW 7 Series manages a combined mileage of 24 miles per gallon of fuel, which is the highest in the segment. Individually, the 7 Series averages 21 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway. It features a fuel tank that has a capacity of 20.6-gallons and can cover a total distance of 432.6 and 597.4 miles in the city and on the highway, respectively.

In comparison, the Audi A8 and Jaguar XJL average lower combined efficiencies of 21 MPG. However, they do feature larger fuel tanks that have a total capacity of 23.8 and 21.7 gallons respectively, which allows them to be at par with the BMW when range and distance are concerned.

Interior
8.4/10

When we said that the 7 Series is a mansion, its cabin is evident of the fact. Step into the cabin of the BMW 7 Series, and you are sure to forget all your problems and smile at that array of features that the car has on offer. The ambient lighting feels upmarket with a hint of quirkiness. The leather upholstery that the seats use is of the highest quality and accord supreme comfort.

The seats provide a lot of under-thigh and knee support. Given that the 7 Series is meant to be chauffeur-driven, its rear seat is the place where you would always want to end up sitting. The total head-, shoulder- and legroom on offer are 39.9/61.2/41.4 and 38.9/61/44.4for the front and rear passengers, respectively. The total cargo capacity is larger than segment standard and has a total volume of 18 cubic feet.

In comparison, all cars as standard can seat five passengers. Though the BMW’s rear seat is the roomiest in the segment; all cars have abundant space. In terms of cargo capacity, the Audi and Jaguar have considerably less space and have a total capacity of 14.2 and 15.2 cubic feet, respectively. Some other salient interior features include:

  • Cruise Control
  • Leather Steering Wheel
  • Front and Rear Cupholders
  • Rearview Camera
  • Interior Air Filtration

How intuitive is the 2016 BMW 7 Series infotainment system?

The BMW 7 Series’ infotainment system feels modern and ahead of its time. The gesture control is the biggest takeaway and adds an element of excitement to the overall setup. The screen that sits in the center features best-in-class graphics and quality and doubles up as a screen for the rearview camera and navigation system. Some standard features include an AM/FM stereo, CD player, and MP3 player. Other features include:

  • Harman Kardon Premium Brand Speakers (available only with top-of-the-line model)
  • Speed-Sensitive Volume Control
  • USB Connection
  • Satellite Radio
  • AM/FM Stereo

Exterior
9.0/10

Perhaps, the most groundbreaking and evolutionary change that the 7 Series has undergone is in the way that it now looks. Maintaining the subtleness and sublimity that its predecessor once boasted of, the latest iteration of the 7 Series looks modern and up-to-date when compared to other segment leaders. It now gets a large signature BMW grille up front, and revamped head and tail lights look as elegant as ever.

From its stance, it is evident that the 7 Series is meant to be chauffeur-driven. The BMW 7 Series is 206.2 inches and sports a wheelbase of 126.4 inches, which is the longest in the segment. It is 74.8 inches wide and 58.2 tall. Its ground clearance of 5.3 inches feels adequate for a car in its segment.

In comparison, the Audi A8 is the longest car in the segment, yet features the shortest wheelbase. It is also the heaviest car in the segment weighing 4,464 lbs, while the Jaguar XJL is the lightest car in the segment. BMW stands in between the two with a curb weight of 4,225 lbs. Some salient exterior features of the BMW 7 Series include:

  • M Performance Package
  • Chrome Line Exterior
  • Fog Light Removal
  • Panoramic Sky Lounge LED Roof
  • Dual Moonroof

Safety
8.5/10

Like other BMW vehicles, the 7 Series is supremely reliable and dependable. It gets packed with all class-leading features prioritizing the safety and comfort of passengers. As standard, the BMW 7 Series comes loaded with features such as driver and passenger airbags, daytime running lights, and emergency braking assist. Other salient safety features include:

  • Cornering Lights
  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Post-Collision Safety System

Final Verdict

The change in exterior design works wonders for the BMW 7 Series. It feels like a mid-life revival, and with all the updates, the 7 Series becomes a stiff competitor to the other stalwarts in the segment. Its engine feels powerful and an efficient and economical ride, making the 7 Series even more alluring. The cabin feels top-notch and has an upmarket aura to it. Its hi-tech infotainment and safety make a compelling case in the sedan’s favor, and with everything working in its way, we recommend buying the BMW 7 Series.
