2016 BMW M4 Review

Pros

  • Power-packed turbocharged motor
  • Sharp handling
  • Impressive braking performance
  • Spacious cabin
  • Powerful brakes

Cons

  • Artificial engine notes

The M4 Coupe is priced at $65,700, which might seem a bit expensive, as for the same price much more powerful cars with bigger displacement engines are available.

Overview

Riding on the huge success of the BMW 4 Series, the brand decided to send the car to its M Performance division back in 2014 and it resulted in the M4. The car is available in a coupe and convertible body style along with some serious performance lurking under its hood.

The 2016 BMW M4 offers a strong engine coupled with a 7-Speed DCT or a 6-Speed manual gearbox to provide maximum driving pleasure and connection between the driver and the car itself. The M4 Coupe is priced at $65,700, which might seem a bit expensive, as for the same price much more powerful cars with bigger displacement engines are available. The M4 primarily competes with the Mercedes Benz AMG C63 and the Cadillac ATS-V.

Engine and Performance
9.1/10

The 2016 BMW M4 Coupe comes equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 engine that puts out a maximum power of 425 hp and a maximum torque of 406 lb-ft. The engine's power is transferred to the rear wheels either through a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT).

The M4 Coupe reaches 60mph in 4 seconds flat and crosses the quarter-mile mark in 12.6 seconds, which are impressive numbers. The engine is smooth and the refinement levels are impressive but lacks the sporty sound which bogs down the excitement to quite an extent.

In comparison, the AMG C63 is the most powerful and the fastest of the lot. With a 4.0 L twin-turbo V8 under its hood putting out 469 hp and 479 lb-ft, the Merc reaches 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and crosses the quarter-mile mark in 11.6 seconds. The BMW M4 comes in at second place with power outputs of 425 hp and 406 lb-ft and taking 4.0 and 12.6 seconds to reach 60mph and cross the quarter-mile, respectively. The Cadillac ATS-V is the cheapest option in the competition but it does output more power than the M4 producing 464 hp and 445 lb-ft. The ATS-V takes 4.2 seconds to reach 60mph and 12.6 seconds to cross the quarter-mile.

Exterior
9.1/10

The 2016 BMW M4 dimensions are generous for a performance coupe. The car looks like a beefed-up and trimmed-down version of the 4 Series at the same time. The bulging aluminum hood and front fenders and the carbon-fiber-reinforced roof help a lot in reducing weight and giving the car a very aggressive stance while announcing that the M4 means serious business at the same time.

The M4 is a beautiful, angry machine that when viewed from any angle boasts that it is a real performance-oriented machine that can carve corners smoothly and ferociously. The M4 Coupe weighs 3,530 lbs, which is pretty light, thanks to the weight-saving parts.

Safety
6.0/10

The 2016 BMW M4 comes equipped with a plethora of standard safety features, including 4-wheel ABS, traction and stability control, and a set of airbags to ensure the safety of the occupants. The stability control system works efficiently along with the braking system to ensure great stopping power at all times.

The M4 coupe takes 106 feet to stop from 60mph, which is a great distance, and that is necessary for a car of its class and performance. The optional Driver Assistance package comes with extra safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, a side- and top-view camera system, speed limit info, frontal collision warning, and automatic braking for collision mitigation. Some standout safety features include-

  • 4-Wheel ABS

  • Stability Control
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Tire Pressure Alert
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rearview Camera

Competition
7.0/10

BMW M4 vs Mercedes-Benz AMG C63

Both the cars do offer some impressive specs for the price they carry but the M4 feels a bit overpriced as compared to the C63. The AMG vehicle is way better in terms of overall performance and aggressiveness along with a matching fuel economy too. But it falls short in front of the M4 in terms of interior space and practicality. The AMG C63 would be the perfect choice over the M4 if raw performance and sharp styling are your needs.

BMW M4 vs Cadillac ATS-V

The Cadillac ATS-V is, perhaps, the most value-for-money performance machine in the segment. It costs lesser than the M4 yet offers almost similar performance figures and better power figures. It only lacks in terms of the overall interior space, comfort levels, and the quality of interior materials when compared to the M4. Overall, it is a cheaper and better alternative to the M4 only in terms of performance aspect.

Final Verdict

The 2016 BMW M4 Coupe is a blend of performance and driving dynamics efficiently combined into a very enjoyable package ensuring the thrill of driving to every enthusiast. The car offers superb handling combined with amazing throttle response and power output. The major cons are the synthetic simulated sound that is put in through the speakers, covering up the actual sound note of the car and the increased price. The advice would be to go for the M4 only if you want a superb manual, performance car. Otherwise, there are better options among the competition.
