This Renegade checks all the boxes

Pros

Economical, Easy to drive

Cons

Hood goes straight out, no slope, Often hard to find button to open tailgate.

Overall I have had a good experience with my Jeep Renegade. I haven’t had to have any major repairs, but it is approaching 100,000 miles. It drives nice. I love the roof that can open. It is a plastic roof so you can’t really call it a sun roof. Only drawback is there is no hood slope so you cannot see where you are parking. I felt it was time to drive an Italian car (FIAT) and my dad thinks I’m ... Read more

2016 Jeep Renegade Review

Pros

  • Excellent off-road ability
  • Smooth ride, agile handling
  • Premium interior
  • Lots of character

Cons

  • Substandard fuel efficiency
  • Irksome automatic transmission
  • Cramped rear seats and cargo space

The SUV has successfully broken the age-old concept that a classic Jeep styling can only be done in big and beefy SUVs by carrying the legendary Jeep design into a car-like subcompact SUV.

Overview

The Jeep Renegade is a relatively new subcompact crossover SUV from the FCA group’s Jeep and has been around since 2014. The SUV has successfully broken the age-old concept that a classic Jeep styling can only be done in big and beefy SUVs by carrying the legendary Jeep design into a car-like subcompact SUV. The SUV eventually proved its feat by tackling tough terrains like any other SUVs of its class.

The 2016 iteration of the Jeep Renegade comes packed with all the bells and whistles one looks for in a vehicle in its segment. With the current MY, while the changes have been limited only to its infotainment system, the 2016 Renegade continues to be a practical and hands-on SUV that drives well in any condition. With an affordable price tag starting at just $17,995, it falls in direct competition with other well-to-do vehicles like the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, and Ford Ecosport.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2016 Jeep Renegade is offered in a total of four trim levels. The base Sport trim’s price starts at $17,995 for the FWD layout and the price goes all the way up to $26,495 for the Trailhawk trim with a standard AWD layout. The base trim of the Renegade comes with a few selected convenience features which are decent for the price it is offered. Some of the standard specifications include a tire-pressure monitoring system, an adjustable steering wheel, and daytime running lights.

We Recommend

Among all the trims we would recommend you the AWD-equipped 2016 Jeep Rengage Latitude. But if you love to veer off the roads pretty often none of the trims does it better than the 2016 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk but of course, it is going to cost you almost thirty grand. The Trailhawk also gets a digital information cluster, automatic wipers, and all-terrain tires.

Engine and Performance
8.4/10

The base trim of the 2016 Jeep Renegade is equipped with a small 1.4liter straight-four turbocharged motor. The engine generates a maximum of 160 horsepower and 184lb-ft of torque which is adequate for this subcompact SUV. The power plant is smooth and the refinement level is impressive. The motor puts down all the power in a smooth manner and mated with a sleek-shifting 6-speed manual gear-box, the performance on offer is pretty decent for the subcompact SUV standards. The torque figure is adequate to pull out the vehicle from almost any situation when equipped with the 4WD drivetrain.

With the Limited and Trailhawk trims, however, the 2016 Jeep Renegade makes use of a 2.4L inline-4 unit that is tuned distinctly and delivers higher power but lower torque outputs at 180hp and 175lb.-ft respectively. It gets an impoverished 9-speed automatic transmission and is available as a standard 4WD variant on the Trailhawk trim.

The competitors offer a lackluster performance when compared against the Renegade. The most disappointing of the lot is the 2016 Honda HR-V and the Mazda CX-3, even with their bigger engines than the Renegade, they fail to offer decent performance for the price they are offered. The smaller engine on offer with the 2016 Ford Ecosport does little to help its cause and the power and torque outputs of 123hp and 125lb.-ft feels underwhelmingly low.

2016 Jeep Renegade Acceleration

The performance that the base turbocharged engine bestows on the 2016 Jeep Renegade is not yet known, however, the 2.4L inline-4 unit is not particularly impressive. It manages 9.4 seconds from the 0 to 60 mph mark, which is slower than most of its competitors in the segment. Shift to the heavier Trailhawk variant, and the Renegade loses its capabilities further.

Like the 2016 Jeep Renegade, the performance potential of the Ford Ecosport has not yet been determined. On the other hand, the 2016 Mazda CX-3 is both the quickest and fastest vehicle in the segment clocking 8.6 and 16.6 seconds in the 60mph and quarter-mile run, respectively. 2016 Honda HR-V is, however, almost equally matched taking 9.5 seconds to the 60mph mark.

2016 Jeep Renegade Ride and Handling

The driving experience one derives from the 2016 Jeep Renegade will solely depend on the trim and configuration of the subcompact SUV. While the base engine that is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission has immense potential and gives a raw driving pleasure, the 9-speed automatic unit does not live up to the jaunty and lively nature of the ride. It feels confused and detached, causing a lackluster riding experience for the driver. While all 2016 Renegades like the other vehicles of the brand have off-roading potential, the Trailhawk trim is best-equipped to take on rough driving patches. However, one evident drawback of the Jeep is the intrusive cabin noise that causes a noticeable toll on the tranquility of the cabin.

2016 Jeep Renegade Braking Performance

The 2016 Jeep Renegade features the largest set of brakes in the segment. At the front, it makes use of a 12-inch brake setup, while at the rear end it is relatively smaller at 11-inches. As standard, each trim of the Jeep Renegade is equipped with an ABS and 4-wheel disc brakes. Unlike its acceleration, the subcompact SUV performs appreciably in the deceleration test, by coming to a halt from the 60-0 mph mark in 116ft.

Like its engine performance, the braking capabilities of the 2016 Ford Ecosport are also not known.  While both the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3 feature similarly-sized brakes, their halting distances are different. While the latter takes 121 ft, the Honda covers 124ft before coming to a standstill.

Interior
8.0/10

The interior of Jeep's subcompact SUV looks far from being cheap, however, the basic 2016 Jeep Renegade Sport trim offers a barebones interior that doesn’t even offer to air-condition. Apart from that, all the Renegade trims are tastefully decorated and come with enough soft-touch materials along with plenty of Jeep-themed logos and designs. The dashboard symbols have enough clarity and complement the practical nature of the cabin.

At the front, the Renegade offers plenty of legroom and the upright seating position makes way for ample headroom. At the rear though, the legroom is lacking but the SUV’s exceptional width takes care of the problem either way. However, what matters the most is that the seats have adequate cushioning and bolstering. The only stumbling block about the cabin is its tranquility.

Despite being quite compact in size, the Renegade offers the best headroom for both the front and the rear passengers as compared to its rivals. The Mazda CX-3 lacks seriously the headroom aspect owing to its low roofline and cramped interior. The HR-V and the EcoSport offer almost similar interior dimensions to each other.

Interior features include:

  • Cruise Control
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats
  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Cupholders

Infotainment

The Jeep Renegade comes standard with a very basic entertainment system consisting of only Am/FM radio and a USB port. The available infotainment system offers either a 5-inch or a 6.5-inch touchscreen display with Jeep’s Uconnect interface and other features such as navigation, Bluetooth, and satellite radio. The user interface of the Uconnect system is pretty straightforward and easy to use.

Some features of the infotainment system are:

  • AM/FM radio
  • USB port
  • 5-inch/6.5-inch touchscreen display
  • Uconnect interface
  • Bluetooth
  • Navigation

2016 Jeep Renegade Cargo Capacity

The 2016 Jeep Renegade's cargo capacity may not be the best in the segment, but it remains decent as per class. With all seats in an upright position, the SUV manages 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is adequate to pack cargo boxes and luggage. With the rear seats folded, it manages 50.8 cubic feet of space.

On the other hand, the 2016 Honda HR-V has ample space on offer and has 24.3 cubic feet of space, followed by the 2018 Ford Ecosport at 20.9 cubic feet. The Mazda CX-3 lurks at the bottom of the table and is underwhelmingly low at 12.3 cubic feet.

Exterior
7.0/10

The 2016 Jeep Renegade looks quite boxy from the outside. It comes with the traditional Jeep front grille with round headlights. The front bumper houses the fog lamps and the turn indicator lights. The sculpted wheel arches make the fenders look wider than usual while the rear profile looks quite stylish with interestingly designed taillights.

The high-mounted Jeep logo looks distinct and the all-around plastic cladding gives a feel of ruggedness. The SUV’s design leans more towards the taller side rather than being aerodynamically efficient. The 2016 Jeep Renegade dimensions might not be the largest in the segment, but it is the widest at 74.2 inches and its 6.7 inches of ground clearance helps improve the off-roading capabilities.

The Jeep renegade is the widest on the list while the HR-V is the longest one at 169.1 inches. The HR-V also offers a better ground clearance than the Renegade while the CX-3 sits pretty low for a crossover SUV. As mentioned earlier, the Renegade is the tallest at 66.5 inches among the rivals on the list giving better all-around visibility from the cabin, while the Honda HR-V sports best-in-class ground clearance of 102.8 inches.
