About 2018 BMW M2

4.1

Overall Rating

The 2018 BMW M2 Coupe is priced at $54,500 bucks and packs a 3-liter inline-6 engine under the hood. It is one of the most stunning performance-packed compact car from the German Giant.

BMW's M division stands for mean machines who know little outside the world of performance, power, and agility. The BMW M2 coupe is no exception to this extravagant line-up of hot-rods. The high-end sport coupe segment surely features competent choices like Audi TT with higher performance and options but BMW stands unique with a rare balance between performance and luxury.

There's no choice for the best- the BMW follows this mantra with the M2. The 2018 BMW M2 Coupe comes with just one trim level which is powered by a 3-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine and 6-speed manual transmission. However, there's also an optional 7-speed automatic drivetrain available for some added cost to facilitate ease of driving.

M2 is offered in a single trim configuration. If you really have to make a decision, it would be choosing a transmission. You can choose between the 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic. While shifting on your own will increase the driving pleasure, the dual-clutch automatic drivetrain offers much easier drivability and hassle-free shifting. Both are equally fun and engaging to drive but purists would just love the manual transmission and is just a matter of personal preference.

2018 BMW M2 Review

Pros

  • Agile handling
  • That V6 is surely rev-loving

Cons

  • Ride jitters
  • Noisy cabin
  • Less luxurious interior than what you expect from a BMW

The 2018 BMW M2 Coupe is priced at $54,500 bucks and packs a 3-liter inline-6 engine under the hood. It is one of the most stunning performance-packed compact car from the German Giant.

Overview

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

BMW doesn't offer many choices with the M2, in fact there aren't any at all. The rear-wheel driven Coupe features a 3-Liter inline-6 turbocharged engine with just an option of a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed automatic gearbox to choose from. With all the features available as standard along with a 6-speed manual, the 7-speed automatic gearbox costs $2,900 premium over the MSRP of $54,500.

Trims Basee
MSRP $54,500
Key Features Standard equipment includes
  LED headlights
  keyless ignition and entry
  Auto-dimming mirrors
  Leather upholstery
  Carbon-fiber interior trim
Power-adjustable sport front seats with heating
  8.8-inch central display
  Navigation System
  Satellite Radio
  USB input
12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and BMW's ConnectedDrive phone integration service.

In addition to this, there are just two add-on packages available with the M2. The executive package includes :

  • Forward collision warning and mitigation
  • Lane departure warning
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Rear parking sensor
  • Wireless charging and Wifi Hotspot

The Driver's package extends the speed limit from 155mph to 168 mph and offers one-day training at BMW's high-performance driving school. Other add-ons for the M2 include Apple CarPlay and smartphone integration.

We recommend

The only decision, to make would be between the two transmissions; an engaging 6-speed manual, or a precise 7-speed automatic. While shifting on your will increases the driving pleasure, the dual-clutch automatic drivetrain offers much easier drivability and hassle-free shifting.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

Like its siblings in M division, the M2 is also a real performer, powered by the 3-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine which produces a maximum of 365 horsepower and 343 lb-ft of torque that is all sent to the rear wheels.

However, one can choose between the 6-speed manual and a 7-speed automatic transmission but all-wheel drive is not available even as an option.

While the TT RS beats the M2 both in power and torque figures on paper, but when the cars compete on the track at high revs, M2 tops the segment with a raised torque of 369 lb-ft which comes with the over-boost function hidden in the direct-injected turbocharged engine. Yet, the M2 is the cheapest offering here while the Audi TT RS is the most expensive one with a price difference of a massive $10,000. The Porsche and the Jaguar with thier smaller engines produce least amount of torque and power respectively.

Acceleration

Being one of the most powerful cars, the M2 coupe is also one of the quickest amongst the flock. With the 6-speed manual transmission, the Coupe pulls from 0 to 60 in just 4.3 seconds and since the computer is surely quicker than humans, the dual-clutch 7-speed auto transmission takes M2 from 0 to 60 in just 4.1 seconds with its perfect gear ratios and tunings. The quarter mile is done in 12.7 seconds while the car maxes out at an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

The M2 follows behind the Audi TT with the segment topping acceleration which takes it from 0 to 60 in a blistering fast 3.6 seconds. However, when it comes to a longer benchmark, the Porsche 718 Cayman takes the baton in its hand and leads the flock, hitting the quarter-mile mark in just 12.7 seconds which is matched by the M2. The F-Type with its base 2.0L engine is the slowest one here in all aspects but has a superior top speed than most others with the top honors going to the Porsche for a top speed of 177 mph.

Braking

With bigger brakes than its predecessor, the 2018 M2 coupe does better than its previous self but fails to provide a hefty challenge to its competitors. The coupe comes to a halt from 60 mph in 108 feet which is pretty impressive in this segment. This top-notch braking performance for a 3,500 lbs car is thanks to the large 15.0-inch front and 14.5-inch rear brake rotors that are also one of the largest in its segment.

Model BMW M2 Coupe Porsche 718 Cayman Jaguar F-type Coupe Audi TT RS

Curb Weight (lbs) 3,450 2,944 3,360 3,306

The 718 Cayman is the lightest car here as it tips the scale a tad bit under 3,000 lbs, which helps it post one of the best braking figures here. Jaguar F-type is the heaviest here and the brake rotors aren't that large as well, and as such takes the longest to come to a halt. The Audi with its ever reliable Quattro system and massive front brake rotors makes sure to halt in the shortest distance in this comparison when brakin from 60 mph.

Handling and Ride quality

The M2 seems like a 2-series loaded with M series performance. This lightweight body makes this coupe exceedingly agile and snappy on tracks, while with the wider tires the 2018 M2 now sticks to the road even better on harsh turns and hence maintains composure. The electric-assisted steering, however, lacks communication and feedback which we expect from a BMW but is still better from the competitors and provides accuracy and speed which is much needed to match the engine's performance.

Along with handling, BMW also balances comfort quite effortlessly with the M2. The suspensions seem to adapt themselves well to the terrain and absords major impacts without much vertical movement. However, the cabin fails to completely insulate the engine whir ad the road noise as it is louder than usual. Also, passengers may experience jitters when riding on undulated roads which constantly tests this beasts' intentions.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

The BMW M2 coupe is quite thirsty in the long run with a combined mileage of 21 mpg but then that is what you epxect from a high performacne car. The EPA rates the M2 for 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highways. The rater small 13.7-gallon gas tank means the M2 can cruise on the highway for around 350 miles before needing a pit stop to quench its thirst. BMW also recommends 95RON or higher which will further increase fuel costs if you choose to follow their advice alongside the frequent gas station trips.

Model BMW M2 Coupe Porsche 718 Cayman Jaguar F-type Coupe Audi TT RS
MPG (City) 18 21 23 19
MPG (Highway) 26 28 30 29
MPG (Combined) 21 24 26 22
Fuel Tank Capacity (gal) 13.7 14.3 18.5 14.5

The F-type is the most fuel efficient car here, with a claimed overall efficiency of 26 mpg. Add to that the extra-large gas tank, and you have a combined driving range of any midsize sedan on the market. Porsche endows the Cayman with an extremely powerful, yet surprisingly efficient engine which provides a range similar to that of the Audi. The M2 is the least effecient one in this comparison and also needs frequent refuelling as compared to others.

Interior
8.5/10

Being a BMW, the M2 flaunts a high-quality, precision built and quintessentially German interior as standard. However, high-quality doesn't mean fancy or plush like the Audi TT RS here as the aesthetics of the interior are rather plain and simple which goes with the sporty intentions of the car. The front seats provide excellent comfort and are perfect for performance driving, however, the driver seat is unnaturally oriented towards the left-front wheel instead of pointing straight, which is weird, but not really noticeable to the untrained eye.

Coming to the cabin space, the 2018 BMW M2 coupe has plenty headroom and fair bit of legroom in the cabin. The rear is quite cramped, and fitting in adults at the back wouldn't be a good idea. The middle rear seat is replaced by a plastic tray and legroom is tight thus making it uncomfortable for anyone but small children. But being a coupe, BMW gets marks for at least trying, unlike Porsche and Jaguar where rear cabin itself is inexistent.

Front (Head / Shoulder / Leg) (In)

40.1 / 54.4 / 41.5 38.3 / 51.5 / 41.6 36.8 / 56.5 / 42.8 37.1 / 53.6 / 41.1

Rear (Head / Shoulder / Leg) (In)

36.5 / 53.4 / 33.0 N/A N/A 33.8 / 47.9 / 28.9

The M2 and the TT RS are the only two coupes here with seating for four occupants, the other two have only two seats. Amongst them too, it is the BMW M2 that emerges as the most spacious coupe with abundant headroom and decent legroom both at the front and at the back. The F-Type has the widest seats and maximum legroom at the front while the rear seat on the Audi is practically useless with hardly any legroom for passengers at the back. The Porsche 718 Cayman has the most cramped cabin at the front in this comparison.

Cargo Volume

Despite having a congested rear seat, the 2018 BMW M2 still manages to offer a fair amount of cargo space in its trunk. With a volume of 13.8 ft cube, the BMW provides enough space to stow small luggage, picnic baskets, etc, which increases the practicality factor. The compact rear seats can also be used as additional cargo space when needed as not many adults would prefer travelling in the backseat of this car.

Volume (cu-ft) 13.8 9.7 14.4 12.0

The Porsche lacks space not only for the passengers but also for their luggage, as it also has the smallest trunk which can barely fit in luggage for a weekend getaway for two. The F-type on the other hand makes full use of the lack of rear seats and has the largest trunk in this comparison. The M2 is right behind with marginally lower capacity which is hardly differentiable but that is with seating for four. The Audi TT also features a sizeable boot which is a couple of cu-ft lower than the BMW.

Infotainment System

BMW provides the same standard build quality and similar styling througout their lineup, be it a 2-series or a 7-series. Which means, the quality and premium factor is the same even when opting for a smaller car. The 2018 BMW M2 comes pre-installed with an 8.8-inch infotainment screen with navigation and BMW's iDrive technology an can be controleed through a touchpad controller and gesture control alongside voice commands for certain features. BMW doesn't support Apple CarPlay by default and adding it costs around $300 as an add-on, but Android Auto isn't available even as an option.

A 12-speaker audio system comes in as standard while a 16-speaker Harman/Kardon sound sytem with a Premium Amplifier and an Automatic Equalizer can be had as an option to further enhance the experience. There are also a number of BMW connected features available on the M2 through their apps which increases the luxury quotient even further. A Qi wireless charging is also available to charge your devices wirelessly while the SiriusXM Satellite Radio is bundled with a 1 year All Access subscription. To stay connected, BMW also offers a 4G Wi-Fi hotpsot and if you found yourself at a place without internet access, you can play your music through the in-built hard drive that also come in as standard.

Exterior
9.0/10

The coupe sports a high-strength aluminum chassis which not only sheds off unnecessary weight but also improve its stability and safety. The cut-down of weight results in higher performance and more agile handling at sharper turns. The design is pretty stylish similar to what we have come to see of BMW cars of recent times.

There are the kidney grilles with LED headlamps flanked on either sides. The bumper are well rounded and beefy with large and angular air dams to give the car that muscular look. The wide tires under the wheel arches that accentuate the curves along with strong character lines complete the macho yet sleek look of the M2.

Track width (in) F/R 62.2 / 63.0 59.6 / 60.3 63.0 / 65.0 61.6 / 60.8

The 2018 BMW M2 is one of the tallest in the segment and even after being a coupe provides ample headroom in the cabin. The car also features one of the longest wheelbase and ground clearance and hence all its competitors fall far behind when it comes to interior space and cargo capacity. The F-type is almost as long as the M2 but has a shorter wheelbase while the Audi TT is the shortest one here as we would have expected after having a look at the interiors section. The F-type is the widest of the lot while the 718 Cayman is the narowest which was again expected.

Safety
8.0/10

The 2018 BMW M2 Coupe hasn't been tested separately by neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS, but the 2-series that this car is based received the prestigious 'Top Safety Pick+' award for the 2017 model year from the IIHS. To add to that, the M2 comes loaded with all the essential safety features as per industry standards and then a few more, a highlight of which is listed below.

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with secondary collision brake assist : The ESC works in tandem with the traction control to modulate power and brakes between the driven wheels depending on the grip available to provide a safe ride even on high speed corners. The secondary collision assist helps in avoiding or minimizing secondary collisions and thereby reducing the crash severity.
  • Brake Assist : brake assist warns the driver about the possibility of a collision by acoustic warning signals which are complemented by visual displays, and when appropriate, brings the vehicle to a complete halt before it results in a crash with the obstruction, person or another vehicle by making use of the radars and sensors at the front of the car.
  • Rear Parking Aid : This assistant can handle even the most difficult parallel parking and tight spaces with ease as it maneuvers in and out of parking spots with amazing accuracy by having the system control the steering while the driver can still have full control of the throttle, gears selector, and brakes.
  • Lane Departure Warning : This system utilizes the cameras placed on the front bumper of the BMW to detect painted lines on the road. If it detects that the car is drifting into another lane without the turn indicators or is in potentially danger, the steering wheel will vibrate along with an auditory signal.
  • Tire-pressure monitoring system : This system makes use of the in-built sensors to detect loss of air pressure in the tires of the car and alerts the driver through the lamp indication on the instrument panel.
  • Dynamic Traction Control : This sytem allows for sports-style driving dynamics while also maintaining traction. It does this by curbing the power sent to the driven wheels in case of loss of grip but in exceptional situations, a small amount of wheel slip can be an advantageous to have some fun.

Competition
6.0/10

BMW M2 Coupe VS Porsche 718 Cayman

Despite having just two seats, the Porsche Cayman makes a tough competitor to the BMW M2 because of its responsive handling and impressive styling. However, BMW proves to be a better choice for having a more powerful engine, better acceleration timings, and superior cabin space while also saving you around a grand. That being said, the Porsche has its own fan following, so unless you are one of them, the M2 is a more practical option here.

BMW M2 Coupe VS Jaguar F-type

The F-type carries a whole different policy than the BMW. While the M2 focuses on driving thrills and snappy performance, the Jaguar takes forward the luxurious and plush image of the brand. Jaguar F-type seems to lag quite behind when it comes to performance, handling, and aggressive styling. The F-type flaunts a much better, fancier and extravagant interior than the M2 coupe but also costs roughly $5,000 more and hence the buyers might have to choose their ride depending on their preference between performance and luxury.

BMW M2 Coupe VS Audi TT RS

The Audi TT RS is the greatest competitor of the 2018 BMW M2 as it produces higher power and torque ouputs along with a better interior but lacks space inside the cabin. However, BMW manages to be more fun to drive with superior handling and provides next levels of practicality with more trunk space and rear seat space all while saving you over 10 grand than Audi. Nothing much to decide here we feel.

Final Verdict

The BMW M2 coupe makes a great car for both driving enthusiasts and commuters looking for loads of fun in their daily commute. The light and compact car is more thrilling and equally agile as any other Coupe from BMW despite being the most affordable one in the M line-up. However, this isn't a family car if your members exceed 2 adults because the luxury and comfort behind the front seats is non-existant. So, if you're looking for affordable fun in the mid-range sports-coupe segment, the M2 awaits you.
