Overall Rating
The German manufacturers have been gushing over their Beemer universe for quite some time now and why not? Their arsenal is filled with performance-driven machines with a good taste for luxury.
The 2019 BMW X6 is all about being luxurious on the inside and unusually extroverted on the outside. With the fastback coupe design and high ride height of a crossover, the X6 tries to amalgamate looks with practicality. The X6 is available in three different trims that are base on the drivetrain and engine options.
It starts at a base price of $63,550 for the rear-wheel-drive version and the all-wheel-drive, xDrive35i, is available for $65,850. Lastly, you have the range-topping V8 powered xDrive50i trim, that you can buy for $78,300. No matter which trim you choose, the X6 comes with loads of standard and optional equipment and features. However, all that focus on sporty design robs away practicality when it comes to the cargo space and the highest ownership costs in the segment do no favors to its owners.
2019 BMW X6 sDrive35i and xDrive35i are almost similar trims barring that one is a rear-wheel drive and the other being an all-wheel drive. The xDrive35i would be the best fit for your daily use and weekend warrior antics because of its versatility to be a sports car plus a go anywhere all-wheel-drive system. If you're a fan of speed and performance and do not pay much attention to the fuel economy, X6 xDrive50i will satisfy your crazy needs.

The 2019 BMW X6 is offered in 3 trim configurations, sDrive35i, xDrive35i, and xDrive50i. The sDrive 35i trim is offered only with a rear-wheel-drivetrain that comes at a price tag of $62,950, while the xDrive35i trim, priced at $65,250, gets the BMW's intelligent all-wheel drive. The top-level trim is the xDrive50i which costs about $78,300 and offers the power as well as agility of a sports car. The BMW X6 comes with 2 engine specifications, a 3.0-Liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 6-Cylinder and a massive 4.4-Liter BMW TwinPower Turbo V-8 which is offered only with the xDrive50i. The transmission that propels this mean machine is an 8-speed sport automatic.
It also has 2 different body styles that make you stand out from the rest of the crowd; The standard model, which comes with 19" Y-spoke alloy and sporty exterior elements, and the M-Sport line which comes with the Aerodynamic kit, choice of 19,20 or 21-inch M Wheels to make your X6 a machine to be reckoned with. However, the M-Sport model has been covered in a separate review.

Backed by the might of two formidable engines the BMW X6 lives up to its sporty aspect of the SUV tag. It is powered either by a 3.0 Liter TwinPower Turbo that delivers 300 horses and 300 lb-ft of torque or a 4.4 Liter V8 that unleashes 445 horsepower with 480 pound-feet of torque. Both the engine options are mated to an 8-speed sports automatic transmission which is one of the best in the industry. Even at high RPMs, it helps the engine run smoothly in any gear and at any speed. The throttle response is quite slick as well and putting the engine into sports mode makes it even more sensitive. Both engine options can munch miles all day with the 4.4L V8 motor offering quicker overtakes, thanks to more torque it offers. As per the refinement, both engines are super silent at idle and only get noisy at high RPMs. However, no hash vibrations can be felt inside the cabin even with the 3.0L motor.

Comparing this BMW to the other SUVs available, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport SE is the most powerful among all the contenders but is also the most expensive at $66,750. However, only 1 bhp more powerful, the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport are equal in every aspect when it comes to performance. Be it comes to power, torque, and price figures. The Range Rover has a 7-seat configuration, that is neither available with Porsche, BMW, or even Mercedes. On the other hand, the BMW is the cheapest of the lot with a price of $62,950 and also with the weakest power and torque figures.
BMW a brand is known for its engine and transmission all over the world and it shows its presence in the acceleration timings. With the 3.0-Liter engine, the BWM X6 rushes towards the 60 mph mark in about 6.0 seconds. Standing quarter-mile takes 14.4 seconds which is at par with its rivals. The Aerodynamic body design and quick-shifting transmission are also responsible for propelling the X6 that fast. The 4.4 Liter engine is obviously capable of making the X6 go faster but we have no complaints with the 3.0-liter engine as well.

In comparison, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne is the fastest to reach 60 mph with only 5.6 seconds on the clock. The Land Rover Range Rover Sports clocks in at 6.8 seconds making it 0.3 seconds slower than the BMW which makes it the slowest SUV in its class.
The 2019 BMW X6 might be a bulky SUV but its driving dynamics completely neglects that notion. It can take on corners at high speeds without a worry but if it has to deal with a bump, be ready to get bounced around. Being an SAV, the suspension is stiffened to make the ride and handling sportier rather than being biased towards comfort. So, the best option is to get the optional dynamic damper control which comes with 4 different modes; Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. These 4 modes have individual settings to suit your style of driving. The steering offers a good amount of feedback from the road but the X6 still fails to set any benchmarks when it comes to driver engagement.
In comparison, the Porsche Cayenne has an upper hand. It almost has track-like handling which gives you immense confidence while driving on any road surface. The Porsche gets some special treatment meaning precision handling and sporty ride. The Range Rover is more comfort-friendly and doesn't offer the sporty handling that you get with the rest of the lot. The Mercedes-Benz GLE will be coming in 2019 so there is not much known about handling, but it would be comfort-oriented, to say the least.
To stop big and fast SUVs, you need big brakes. The BMW X6 gets a 13.7-inch disc in the front and 12.6-inch discs in the back. It takes 122 ft to come to a complete stop. Weighing in close to 4600 pounds, it's commendable to look at that kind of braking effort. The brake pedal is quite responsive and responds well at high speeds as well. The pedal requires a minimum push to engage the disc brakes in stopping the car and not much brake fade is experienced even under constant hard braking.

Comparing it to the rest of the competition, the Porsche Cayenne has some serious braking systems. It does take the last position in brake test from 60MPH to 0MPH taking 130 ft but also being the heaviest that an awesome effort. BMW is a clear winner in the brake test.
With a towing capacity of 6000 pounds, the BMW X6 can easily pull a boat, a camper, and even a big trailer too. The X6's enormous towing capacity makes it one of the favorites amongst SUV lovers.

The Range Rover Sport being a sports tourer with AWD advantage towers over everyone with a massive towing capacity of 7716 pounds. Porsche being the lightest has been rated to pull double its weight i.e.; 7700 pounds. The Mercedes AMG GLE has 7200 pounds towing capacity thanks to its massive engine power. BMW X6 stands last in terms of towing capacity.
Both engines from the Bavarian motors demand a high fuel consumption, however, fuel economy means little if you are going for the X6 SUV. The performance and handling are what fuels you for the chase. This BMW offers a mileage of 18MPG in the city, 25MPG on the highway, and combined city and highway driving cycle yields 21 MPG. While not at par with the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class, it is quite acceptable.

It's actually no surprise to see Land Rover Range Rover Sport on the lowest end of this spectrum. On the other hand, the Porsche Cayenne is made performance-friendly but not fuel-efficient. The same is the case with BMW. But in this segment, most people do not look at fuel economy while purchasing such luxury machines.
With design largely extracted from the X5, the 2019 BMW X6 features premium interior quality plus a respectable amount of quirks and features which justifies the price. Even the base trim is bolted with better features than its competition. BMW's premium Dakota leather is standard with anthracite headliner and poplar wood trim. The large 10.2-inch iDrive 6.0 is also standard with this sports coupe. There is standard navigation, infotainment functions, and ConnectedDrive that comes with the X6. The quality of materials used all around the cabin scream premium and the cabin feels quite high-tech.Â
The coupe roofline invades the rear headroom space, while the front seats feel comfortable and are adjusted to provide maximum comfort to the driver and passenger. The headroom is on the low side at the back, but the legroom is pretty good. The ride at the back may get bouncy on uneven surfaces due to a stiff suspension setup. For better air quality inside the cabin, BMW has put active charcoal micro-filter ventilation. But X6's sloppy design is a bit disadvantageous as getting in and out of the car is difficult because of the low roof.

When comparing BMW X6 to its rivals, shoulder room is the best by 2 inches from Mercedes AMG GLE but the latter is best when it comes to Headroom with 40.4 inches. Range Rover has the best legroom with 42.2 inches in the front. It's a different story at the back. Range Rover has the best headroom of 39.1 inches and shoulder room of 59.5 inches owing to its excellent height.  The xDrive50i gains quad-zone automatic climate control, 20-way power-adjustable front seats, proximity keyless entry over the base level trim.
The BMW X6's infotainment system is the easiest to use in its class. All models come standard with a 10.2-inch widescreen display, satellite navigation, and an easy-to-use rotary dial down in the center console. Menus are logically laid out and there's a set of physical shortcut buttons down by the scroll wheel that helps make it easy to switch between key features as you drive along.
You also get BMW's Smartphone Connect app as standard which helps you to go through some features of your phone on the car's built-in display. The standard stereo system is loud but you can choose with an optional Harmon Kardon system if you're a die-hard music fan for that otherworldly feeling.
The BMW X6 offers 26.6 cu-ft of cargo space that is good but not as good as the X5. Coupe-style robs of some space in the back but it still is massive. Split-folding 40/20/40 gives ample space and also the practicality to carry luggage. After a fully flat rear seat, you get 59.7 cu-ft of space.

Comparing the practicality of these awesome SUVs, Range Rover has the most space at the back with 27.5 inches when all seats are up and when folded down it has an unrivaled 62.2 inches of space. Mercedes AMG GLE has a weak point with cargo space at 23.0 inches with all seats up. BMW, on the other hand, is good but not better than the Porsche cayenne which has 27.1 inches.
The 2019 BMW X6 is 193.8 inches in length and 78.3 inches in width that means that it is the longest SUV in its segment. The ground clearance is pegged at 7.8 inches which makes it a hit, be it on and off-road. The large wheelbase of 115.5 inches means more room inside for the passengers. The height of 7.8 inches makes the X6 a big, muscular SAV on the road. The styling is quite unconventional which can be a love it or hate it affair for many users. With its large kidney grille at the front and well-sculpted bumper, the X6 does make a good initial impression. The fastback coupe-like design at the rear makes it look more sporty than it actually is.

The new 2019 Porsche Cayenne is almost similar in length and width department to the X6. Mercedes AMG is the widest with 78.9 inches and heaviest at 4960 pounds but a shorter wheelbase of 114.8 inches means less cabin space. Range Rover has a wider track width both front and rear of 66.6 inches which makes it stable at high speeds and while cornering and taller stance with 71 inches to give more presence on the road.
The 2019 BMW X6 offers hosts of safety features to protect you and your vehicle, on the road and off it. Some of the coolest features by far are the BMW remote services which include stolen vehicle recovery, the remote door unlocks, and the BMW remote app. The IIHS and NHTSA have not rated the 2019 BMW X6 yet but you can expect excellent safety scores from both. Some of the standard features are given below:
The Porsche Cayenne is instantly recognizable and desirable in ways the BMW X6 can never be. Dynamically designed Porsche Cayenne is a hands-down winner in many aspects like massive towing capacity, lightweight chassis, excellent space on the inside, and an awesome engine. BMW X6 is showing its age interiorly and exteriorly. In technology, both are neck to neck but Porsche still has the upper edge.
BMW X6 Vs Range Rover Sport
The Range Rover Sport doesn't have sharp responses but it is decent enough and counters it with greater cruising comfort. The supercharged V6 is an awesome unit and better than what BMW X6 offers. Plus being a full-size SUV, you have the option of 7 seats and also massive towing capacity. The only issue is Land Rover reliability which is not as good as BMW.
The 2019 BMW X6 will no doubt continue to be one of the most controversial SUVs on sale. It's not everyone's cup of tea but it gets the attention it is worthy of, be it in a crowded market or on a racetrack. The Original SUV coupe might have its haters, but it also has some fans. Its capable powertrains, excellent infotainment system, and well-built interior just make it even more desirable. Judging by its DNA, the BMW X6 is a good offering that fails to impress when it comes to practicality. It isn't the most comfortable one nor the most practical option, but it ultimately shows off your bold lifestyle which leaves the people awe-struck.
