2020 BMW 7 Series Review

Pros

  • Authoritative acceleration
  • Extraordinary space for rear passengers
  • Plush interior
  • Great driving dynamics

Cons

  • Too long to fit into tight parking spaces
  • Not as driver-focused as the previous generations

BMW has been aggressively revealing its upcoming cars, and the new 7-series is another strong product that the company will introduce to their lineup in 2020.

Overview

Always dreamt of rolling in the lap of luxury, with the latch of power? Look no more, the BMW 7 Series is here *drumroll*. First introduced in the year 2016, the BMW 7-series was one of the few rides, that could make it to the milestone of comfort, luxury, and performance, that rides such as the Mercedes-Benz S-class had previously set.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The BMW 7-series is available in two prime trims, namely- the BMW 740i and the BMW 740i. The 740i is the base model and houses a 3.0 L Turbocharged I6 engine, which can generate 335 hp and 390 lb.-ft. of torque. The 740i is available in two drivetrain options - RWD, and the xDrive, which is the Bimmer’s AWD configuration.

The 750i is the upper model and packs more punch than the 740i. The 750i obtains power from a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine, which is capable enough of generating 523 hp and 553 lb.-ft. Of torque.

We recommend

The BMW 740i does great in terms of performance, the car delivers punchy acceleration and great power delivery. However, if only the best of the best can impress you, we’d suggest you to go for the 750i as it packs much more oomph than the 740i.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

The BMW 7-series seems like an elite car that is meant to massage all of your senses with the luxury it offers. However, the ride has more than what meets the eye. Behind that artistically-sculpted kidney-grille rests a 3.0L Inline-6 engine, which is further assisted by turbos, and is capable of generating a punchy 335 hp along with 330 lb.-ft. Of torque, which kicks in as early as 1380 rpm. The 2020 BMW 740i receives a bump of 13 hp over the previous model, but also undergoes a depreciation of 2 lb.-ft.

Regardless of the trim, the entire 7-series lineup employs an 8-speed sport automatic transmission that can be used in automatic sport or manual shift modes. The transmission is bound to deliver the power to the rear wheels as standard, however, you can also opt to go for the xDrive models for a couple of additional bucks.

The transmission arrangement in the 2020 7-series models is a great improvement over the previous-gen as it features new control electrics and torsion dampers. Moreover, this arrangement also gets a wider spread of gear ratios, which makes each and every upshift and downshift absolutely seamless.

How fast is the BMW 740i?

The BMW 7-series may look like a heavy ride that will drive like a chariot rather than like a bolt, but guess what, it’s breathtakingly fast. The 740i, which happens to be the base model of the 7-Series is potent enough to sprint from 0-60 MPH in just 5.2 seconds. The second’s clock keeps on shrinking, as you elevate to the upper, more lethal models.

The BMW 740i delivers power at the slightest tap of the throttle pedal and can go the quarter of a mile distance in just 12.5 seconds at a speed of 113 mph. The ride gets an electronically capped top speed of 155 mph.

The BMW 7-series lineup offers a number of engine options, however, what the 740i runs on is a 3.0L inline-6 engine, which is further assisted by a turbocharger. The BMW 740i is a heavy set of wheels with curb weight ranging over the 4000 lbs. Mark.

Eyeing all these stats, we can say that BMW 740i may get perceived as a fuel-chugger but it definitely is not. The ride can go a distance of 22 city miles or 29 expressway miles for every single gallon of gasoline. Summing it up, we get a combined mpg figure of 24. These are the figures for the standard RWD model, employ the xDrive AWD system and the combined mpg figure comes down to 23.

The BMW 740i is the lightest heavyweight in this comparison and also the most fuel-efficient offering. The Lexus LS 500 F Sport rakes in the second spot with a combined mpg of 23, followed by the Merc and the Audi, with both the rides offering a combined mpg figure of 22.

Interior
8.5/10

The insides of the 2020 BMW 7-series are built with the motive to give the occupants the experience of a godly chariot every time they commute in it. The interior layout of the 740i remains mostly unchanged from the previous generation. It features the same orientation with a three-layer dashboard dominating the panel, followed up by a trapezoidal configuration of the ac vents, and finally the mirrored control panel, which sits at the bottom of the stack.

What has changed for the cabin of the BMW 7-series in the year 2020 is mostly in the form of the materials used to ornament the ride’s cabin. The steering wheel, now, has a completely different lookout with chrome inserts expanding on all the three spokes. Moreover, for seats and door panels, Dakota leather is now been established as the standard upholstery, and if Dakota does not have what it takes to allure you, you can always go for Nappa leather. The veneer adornments have also undergone certain changes, as the company now places American Oak across the cabin.

The BMW 740i’s 126.4-inch wheelbase ensures that its occupants are not given a single chance to complain regarding space on offer in the ride. The front passengers are catered with more than 41-inches of leg space, while the rear-seat passengers enjoy a legroom of 44.4 inches, which is more than enough to stretch out to the fullest.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

The 2020 BMW 7-series employs an iDrive 7 operating system to look after all the infotainment needs of the ride. This panel beams all the data on a 10.25-inch touchscreen unit, that further presents this information to you in the form of crisp graphics.

Moreover, what’s interesting is the voice commanding in the 2020 BMW 7-series models, that is prompted by the wake-up phrase - “Hey BMW” and can be used to control several functions.

  • Premium amplifier
  • Speed sensitive volume
  • Wireless phone connectivity
  • SiriusXM AM/FM/HD/Satellite with seek-scan, single in-dash CD player
  • 16 Harman/Kardon speakers
  • WiFi Hotspot
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Logic 7 digital signal processor
  • WiFi hotspot
  • Gesture control
  • ConnectedDrive service
  • Voice commands

What about utility?

The BMW 740i offers a generous amount of space beneath its trunk hood, with a cargo volume of 18.2 cubic feet. The layout of the trunk has a wide and deep orientation which makes it suited to store a number of bags.

The trunk opens wide, which makes the process of loading and unloading stuff a mere cakewalk.

Exterior
8.0/10

The Bavarians have placed their best foot forward, in the form of the 2020 BMW 7-series lineup. The car has received significant styling updates in this iteration. Starting upfront, the kidney-grille that has been a trademark of the Bimmer for quite a long time has been enlarged by up to 40 percent for the 2020 BMW 740i, as compared to the previously outgoing models. The grille now also gets surrounded by a single-piece frame.

The headlights have also been toned down and now appear sleeker than before and are fitted with adaptive LED lamps. The engine hood has also been revised, in order to fit with the magnified grille, and houses a smaller lower bumper vent, in order to improve the aerodynamics.

The 2020 BMW 7-series houses a number of upgrades which play a crucial role in improving the ride’s aerodynamics. The most noteworthy of these changes is the enlargement of the air vents in the front fenders which makes it easier for the engine to gulp more air. Secondly, the mirror caps are now placed on the window frame with slimmer posts.

What are those eye catching features?

The 2020 BMW 7-series exudes elegance and machoism with every inch, cut, and curve of its body. The ride was always a handsome car, but come 2020, it’s appeal has increased many folds. Some of the most prominent exterior features of the 2020 BMW 740i are:

  • Galvanized steel/aluminum body material
  • Chrome rear bumper insert
  • Chrome grille
  • Chrome front bumper insert
  • Chrome bodyside insert
  • Chrome door handles
  • Chrome tip exhaust
  • 18-inch V-spoke alloy wheels
  • LED headlights

Safety
8.8/10

The BMW 740i packs in a wide range of safety features that ensure the safety of all the occupants of the ride. The facelifted BMW 7-series models have in them, what it takes to be high on technology. Some of the most prominent safety and driver-assist features that this ride offers are:

  • Remote activated perimeter/approach lights
  • Side-impact bars
  • Traction control
  • 4 ABS channels
  • 8 airbags
  • ABS and driveline traction control
  • 3 point rear center seatbelt
  • Frontal Collision Warning w/City Collision Mitigation
  • Panic alarm
  • Perimeter/approach lights
  • Tracker system

Competition
8.0/10

BMW 740i vs. Audi A8

Priced at $85,200 the A8 is the closest competitor of the BMW 740i, with an almost similar price tag, and exactly the same number of ponies. The A8 houses a 3.0L TFSI V6 engine, which can generate 335 hp and 369 lb.-ft. of torque, making the car sprint from 0-60 in 5.6 seconds. The A8 is a good looking car, but it definitely not gonna attract eyeballs as the Bimmer 7 can. The Audi A8 houses a plush interior, but definitely not as uptown as the 7.

BMW 740i vs. Mercedes-Benz S450 Sedan

The Mercedes-Benz S450 Sedan is the priciest offering of this segment, with prices starting from $94,250. The ride houses a 3.0L twin-turbo V6, which churns out 362 hp, along with 269lb.-ft. of the spinning force. These power figures can make the car sprint from 0-60 MPH in just 5.4 seconds. The Auto-marquee has always been a renowned name in the universe of comfort, and the S450 carries this legacy forward in an astounding way.

Final Verdict
8.2/10

The BMW 7-series has always been one of those cars, which we can without a single doubt, call “perfect”. Though it is believed that perfection cannot be made better, but come 2020, the Bavarians have totally nailed this task of making perfection even better. The BMW 7-series is an ideal car that imposes a strong lifestyle statement while performing impeccably.
