2020 Ford Transit Review

Termed as the most customisable and possibly the most versatile van in the market, the Ford Transit is responsible for bringing in huge sales numbers.

Termed as the most customisable and possibly the most versatile van in the market, the Ford Transit is responsible for bringing in huge sales numbers. The 2020 Ford Transit aims to build on this reputation and offer a capable van that can be tailored to suit your needs and the nature of your purpose of buying the van

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

Customization is the thing which Ford Transit is about, as it is available in three length options and it goes the same for height options too, as low, medium, and high roofs can be had. It totally depends on one’s choice. Engine options available in the 2020 Ford Transit Cargo Van are a standard 3.7-Liter V6 engine, a turbocharged 3.2-liter diesel-powered Inline-five cylinder engine and it also gets an additional turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine. In the 2020 Ford Transit Cargo Van is now having a 10-speed automatic transmission; buyers have an option to choose between RWD and AWD

What do we recommend?

Having considered all the available trims and options, we conclude that only must have in the Transit Cargo is the optional dual sliding rear cargo doors as it makes loading and unloading very easy for the occupant. Other than that you must take a look at all the available options as they are very important in defining the mechanical and physical capabilities of the van.

Engine and Performance
5.0/10

The 2020 Ford Transit Cargo Van is offered with three powertrain options, the engine in the base is a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 that provides 275 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. The turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 pumps 310 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. Both are mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford has offered the best engine options in this lineup.

Comparing the Transit with its rivals it has the most effective gearbox , a 10-Speed automatic. Coming to the power output of each engine, the GMC Savana tops the segment, producing 276hp@5200rpm, narrowly followed by the Ford Transit and its 3.7 liter V6 producing 275hp@6000rpm. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter feels underpowered, but the torque allows for a comfortable drive nonetheless.

How fast is the Ford Transit?

The Ford Transit falls under the lightest of cargo vehicles, which gives an extra point to the brand in terms of acceleration of the cargo van. The vehicle drives very smoothly and the power delivery is also very linear. The rear-wheel-drive option reaches the 60mph mark in 7.5 seconds, and it takes 15.9 seconds to cover a quarter-mile on the road. This is the fastest cargo van in the segment also we cannot forget this is only because of the overall weight of the car.

Comparing the Ford Transit with its rivals, it comes out to be the fastest in the segment, reaching the 60 mph mark from 0 in 7.5 seconds followed by the GMC Savana which takes 7.8 to reach the 60mph mark from 0. Talking about reaching the quarter-mile again the Ford Transit tops the list followed by Nissan NV1500S.

Ride and handling

Despite its proportions, the Ford Transit is not difficult to handle. The electrically assisted power steering of the car is precise, with just the right amount of resistance. The Transit is comfortable and composed for long rides, although driving through rough roads can get quite noisy for the occupants. The suspension of the car is excellent; and sticking to the speed limit isn't that difficult either.

The 2020 Ford Transit shows plenty of manners on the road. Predictable steering and power delivery make for an almost effortless drive, while the engine manages to run silently when not pushed around. The all-wheel-drive option is best to tackle muddy and slippery roads with a lot more confidence. The system can send up to 100% of the power to the front axle according to the conditions.

Braking Performance

Braking of the Ford Transit is similar to its ride and handling, it won’t scare the driver at high speed. The pedal is soft and is easy to control the weight of a fully-loaded Transit.

Towing capacity of the van

There are endless customization options in the Ford Transit, multiple payload packages are available. The Ford Transit has a 7100 pound towing capacity which is better than Nissan NV and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, but the GMC Savana has more towing capacity than the Ford Transit.

Fuel Economy
3.0/10

As this vehicle is brand new, no real-world gas mileage reports are available as of now. It will not be tested by the EPA as this is a commercial vehicle. However, when we talk about the 2019 model the 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine had mpg between14 and 17. A 25-gallon fuel tank was standard and was extended to a 31-gallon fuel tank for extended range.

Interior

The Ford Transit has a very basic interior, though we cannot say it ugly. The hard plastic is what you will see the most which are durable; also the design is very decent. The shape of the steering wheel is well designed and the gear level can be reached easily. The vehicle has a commanding driving position and visibility is excellent too.

Comparing the weights of all the vans, the Ford Transit is the lightest of all, whereas the Nissan NV is the heaviest.

Safety
7.0/10

The Ford Transit is a commercial vehicle so it is not subjected to crash testing by the IIHS or the NHTSA. Talking about last year’s figures, the Ford Transit had a 4-star frontal crash test rating from NHTSA, till the current time the IIHS has not rated the Transit. Transit offers basic safety features like other cars.

Some of the safety features of the van are:

  • Forward-collision warning
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Lane keep assist
  • Rearview camera with trailer hitch assist
  • Crosswind assist
  • Post-collision braking
  • Front airbags and side airbags

Nissan NV Cargo Vs Ford Transit Cargo

One of the bold and strong offerings in the boxy van category is the Nissan NV, it stands against the Ford Transit, but is not able to beat it. Ford the brand is known for its reliability, the Transit does follow this trend. There is a tough fight between both of these vans but the Ford Transit stands out boldly. The Nissan NV offers less power as compared to the Ford Transit also same goes for the cargo space. Price of Nissan is low as compared to the Ford Transit; this is the only thing that differs. People who have low budget can go for Nissan NV

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Vs Ford Transit Cargo

We all know Mercedes is ahead of the Ford in design and styling and the same is the case for these vans. The Mercedes Sprinter is powered by a tiny 2.0-liter turbo engine and pumps 188 horsepower as standard. Although, the Mercedes Sprinter is an amazing piece of art with a top-notch comfort level and excellent maneuverability. It has the MBUX infotainment system that features in all-new Mercedes. Where the Ford Transit focuses on outright abilities, the Mercedes Sprinter is more into comfort.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

Surely, being called the segment leader is right for the Ford Transit. It has got all the things that a person wants to see in his/her van. It has got the power space, highly customizable, and many more. Though the standard Ford Transit might not get your attention but move a bit high on the other variants will surely get into your mind.

The van has amazing cargo space on offer in the base variant too. It surely can be said as value for money.
