For starters, the special feature of the interior is the illuminated Boston trim, which offers six different colors at the driver’s mercy to choose from while the seats are dressed in Dakota leather and the list goes on. 

As standard, the 2021 M235i gets an 8.8-inch touchscreen display that features wireless Apple CarPlay and Andriod Auto. The 2021 BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe is the perfect choice for those who want more power but not at the cost of practicality. Along with a 301-hp engine, it adds M Sport steering, suspension, and brakes to its performance segment. It also adds Dokato leather upholstery, a power-adjustable steering wheel with paddle shifters, and keyless entry as standard interior features. We recommend springing for the $950 Driver Assistance package as it includes a rearview camera, Parking Assistant, Active Cruise Control, and Back-up Assistant.

The 2021 BMW M235i Gran Coupe is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged Inline-4 engine, which will be capable of producing 301 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque. The M235i gets a twin-scroll turbo, which makes the engine more responsive and keeps the power reserves complete. Paired with 8-speed automatic transmission, it makes the power distribution more efficient and makes it easier to find the right gear at the right speed while the AWD system is standard.

The 2021 M235i is pretty entertaining to drive. It feels so much more sure-footed than the warmer version of the RWD 2 Series used to feel. So, it's got the best of both worlds. The limited-slip differential on the front axle helps boost traction when exiting corners. The steering is very accurate and direct. The M235i also gets the M sport suspension and steering wheel, for more poised and sharper handling. As a cherry on the top, you also get a launch control system, which makes it a lot of fun on a track.

Since this is the performance-focused version of the Gran Coupe series, acceleration is great thanks to its quick-shifting gearbox and refined engine. The 2021 M235i can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in a mere 4.7 seconds while the quarter-mile time is recorded at 13.1 seconds and tops at 155 MPH. Speaking of the brakes, the M235i  gets the powerful M sport brakes with 4 ventilated discs around all four corners. These brakes are powerful and sturdy enough to bring this sedan to rest from 60-0 MPH in 115 feet. 

Obviously, the more powerful Audi S4 has the best performance stats on the table and ranks on that top. Also, it is the only car to get a six-cylinder engine in this competition. The Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 is just a tad bit slower than the M235i in both performance tests. Despite producing more power than the M235i, the Volvo S60 has the lowest numbers on the table.

Despite considerably more power, the M235i is only slightly behind in the gas mileage stakes- Carbuzz

The 2.0L turbo-4 engine under the hood of the 2021 BMW M235i Gran Coupe is one of the most frugal engines in the segment. According to the EPA, the 2021 M250i returns 23 MPG in the city, 32 MPG on the highway, and 26 MPG combined. These MPG figures are the best in its segment and remain unbeatable by its rivals. 

With a total fuel capacity of 13.2 gallons, the M235i provides a minimum range of 303 miles on the city driving conditions and about 422 miles on the highways. With a combined range of 363 miles, the 2021 M235i is somewhat good compared to its rivals. However, the fuel tank plays a major role in delivering long ranges but the M235i is fitted with a small one. 

As mentioned before, the M235i stands on the top with class-leading MPG figures. The second place is occupied by the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 with 25 MPG combined. The large fuel tank for the Volvo S60 helps it to deliver the best driving range in this competition and decent fuel ratings. With a combined mileage of 23 MPG, the Audi S4 comes in last.

The 2021 BMW M235i Gran Coupe offers a well-designed and decently equipped interior. It comes fitted with an anthracite headliner along with an illuminated Boston trim. The M235i can seat up to five people and is covered with Dakota leather. The front seat comfort is excellent in the M235i. Both front seats are 14-way power-adjustable which helps the front passengers to find an agreeable position. The three-spoke steering wheel is wrapped in leather too and gets multiple controls on it for climate and audio settings. 

The door design is also very narrow, which makes getting in and out of the Beemer a bit more difficult than its competitors. Headroom is the best upfront which is good news for six-footers. The sleek coupe-like design of the M235i does not make the rear-row passengers feel claustrophobic. In fact, there's plenty of space to get comfortable at the back. The 2021 M235i also excels with a class-leading cargo capacity of 15.1 cu-ft. That's more than enough to store two large suitcases. 

Compared to its rivals, the rear-seat passenger space offered in the Audi S4 is the best in this competition. The Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 offers the least rear legroom among its rivals. Like the S4, the Volvo S6 offers just 11.6 cu-ft. of cargo storage. On the infotainment front, an 8.8-inch touchscreen display is standard but it can be upgraded to dual 10.25-inch screens ( infotainment and instrument cluster), which is an exclusive option for the Gran Coupe models. A 10-speaker sound system is standard but the optional 16-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system is worth spending extra bucks. 

The iDrive infotainment system features some standard connectivity features such as wireless Andriod Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, and many more. The user interface is extremely smooth, making it one of the best infotainment systems in its class. A rotary controller on the center console and the controls on the steering wheel is another means of controlling the infotainment functions. The menus are well-categorized, so navigating through the settings wouldn't take much time. Some other interior and infotainment features of the M235i are:

If we had to describe the BMW M235i Gran Coupe in one word it'd be: frumpy- Motor1

The exterior styling of the 2021 BMW M235i Gran Coupe looks aggressive and adds a lot of sporty character. The strong lines on the bonnet point down towards the grille. The headlights have still got the four eyes that are pretty iconic and also move the focus onto the kidney grille. The M235i has probably the highest ground clearance in its class. It sits 6 inches above the ground while the wheel arches give space to M-designed V-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels but can be upgraded to 19-inch ones as well. The optional $500 Shadownline package adds black mirror caps and Shadowline trim on its exterior. 

The 2021 M235i's wheelbase measures only 105.1 inches which is the shortest among its rivals. Still, its interior does not lack passenger space, which is surprisingly good. Moving to the side of the car, you get details like frameless windows while the strong crease line running along to the back gives out the Gran Coupe aesthetic. The shape of the car is very different from the regular 2 Series with the sloping roofline which leads you to the back. The rear of the M235i is perhaps the most opinion-splitting part of the car's design because it's quite distinctive. The black strip below the badge goes all the way along the back and taillights that wrap around the car. 

The wheelbase of the Volvo S60 is the longest in this competition. It measures exactly 8 inches longer than the M235i. This translates to a roomy cabin. The Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 sits quite lower to the ground at 3.6 inches for better handling and performance. 2021 BMW M235i vs 2021 Mercedes-AMG CLA 35

The Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 retails at nearly $2,000 more than the BMW M235i but houses the same engine with similar power levels. Yet, the M235i is a tad bit faster than the AMG CLA 35. Its fuel economy and passenger space are also similar to the M235i but the AMG CLA 35 is a step ahead as it offers more luxury features. The cargo storage in the M235i is much better than the AMG CLA 35. When it comes to safety, the M235i offers more standard and effective safety features. 

2021 BMW M235i vs 2021 Audi S4

Priced at $49,900, the Audi S4 houses the most powerful engine in this competition. Hence, its performance figures are much better than the M235i. However, more power leads to more consumption of fuel. Therefore, its fuel ratings are lower than the M235i. On the inside, the S4 offers more head and legroom in the rear row but loses on practicality. The S4 offers decent safety features but most of them are optional which is not the case in the M235i. 

2021 BMW M235i vs 2021 Volvo S60

With a price difference of at least $3,000, the Volvo S60's engine makes 15 hp more than the M235i. But those extra doesn't have any effect on the performance as the latter has better performance stats. Also, its fuel efficiency is not so great as the M235i. The S60's cabin more headroom in the rear row than the M235i which is a plus point but falls short in terms of cargo capacity. TheS60 earned the 'IIHS Top Safety Pick' award which makes it the safer option.
