About 2021 Jeep Compass

3.5

Overall Rating

The 2021 Jeep Compass carries forward into the new year in a choice of 6 trims that start at $23,915 and go all the way up to $31,060. With new safety features being added to all the trims, the Limited trim and the Trailhawk trims get some extra goodies in terms of driver assistance features. Powered by a 2.4L turbocharged inline-4 engine that produces 180 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque, it is an off-roading capable daily driver. The interiors are feature-rich and comfortable with leather upholstery.

The 2021 Jeep Compass is for sale now and is offered in a choice of 6 trims, Sport/ Latitude/ Altitude/ 80th Anniversary/ Limited/ Trailhawk. The prices start from $23,895 with the Sport trim and go all the way up to $31,040 with the Trailhawk trim. Among the upgrades planned, the Limited and Trailhawk trim get significant upgrades in driver assistance features while the there is a special 2021 Jeep Compass 80th Anniversary edition.

The 2021 Jeep Compass interiors get a significant upgrade too as you get premium cloth upholstery, soft-touch surfaces in the cabin, and even adorn a dual-tone outlook in the Trailhawk trim. Despite its winning streak, the 2021 Jeep Compass has no shortage of competitors as it faces stiff competition from the Subaru Forester, the Toyota RAV4, and the Hyundai Tucson.

From the 6 trim levels on the offer of the 2021 Jeep Compass, we would recommend you to opt for the Altitude trim with 4WD as the feature-rich build makes it a promising and value for money proposition. That being said, we would recommend you to splurge $2,600 extra to get the Convenience Group and Driver Assistance Group from the Packages which will make it truly immersive and safe like a tank.

Engine and Performance
6.0/10

The four-pot puts out only 180 hp and 175 lb-ft, so the Compass is far from athletic. -CarBuzz.com

The 2021 Jeep Compass comes with a 2.4L naturally aspirated inline-4 engine under the hood which is good for 180 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. This engine is made of ionized high-pressure aluminum alloy which aids in its performance and reduces overall weight. With this powertrain, the transmission choice varies depending on the drivetrain you choose. Pick up the 4x4 or 4WD models like the Trailhawk, and you will get a 9-speed automatic transmission while the 4x2 or FWD models like the Limited or Altitude trim will get a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Irrespective of the trim and drivetrain between FWD and 4WD that you choose for your Compass, the shifts in the transmission remain peppy and sublime and you will not find any complaints in the drive experience. For the price that you pay for the 2021 Compass, the ride quality is actually reminiscent of the age-old rugged SUV era and yet harnesses the classic feel of the new era. Overtaking isn’t a problem and the peppy nature of the engine ensures that there is ample power and torque available every time you floor the pedal.

The Jeep Compass has a 0-60 time of 8.7 seconds which does not make it very quick. Talking of a spirited drive, the Toyota RAV4 will surely charm the driver with its athletic nature. But when it comes to the ease of driving, the Subaru Forester does it for most people with its full-time AWD that is ready to conquer any terrain. The Jeep Compass might not be the most powerful but it has the best vibe and value for money in the lineup.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The 2.4L powerplant is fairly fuel-efficient and the 2021 Compass can return 22 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 25 MPG combined. The fuel tank is on the smaller side with a maximum capacity of 13.5 gallons that gets the job done in most cases for a family-friendly ride as you get a combined range of 337 miles after a full refuel.

The MPG numbers that the 2021 Jeep Compass offers are in no way exemplary and do need a fair bit of rework if they want to make an impact. With these numbers, your fuel costs would run on the slightly higher side as the others are fairly well balanced and offer much better value in terms of fuel costs. The range however, is on the weaker end of the spectrum.

The Toyota RAV4 and the Subaru Forester are locked in the battle of being the best, but the latter loses out on account of the lower highway economy. The Hyundai Tucson actually finds itself out of bounds as the Jeep Compass manages to save its hide by that much, thanks to the marginally better highway economy.

Interior
7.5/10

Standard safety features on the Jeep Compass included side curtain airbags, traction control, and anti-lock brakes with rough-road detection. -TheCarConnection.com

There is an old-world vibe to the 5-seater interior with all the materials used. In order to remain competitively priced, a lot of hard plastic is used across all surfaces of the 2021 Compass but in no way does it ever feel tacky. Thankfully, most of the surfaces on the door are covered in cloth or soft-touch materials which give a slightly premium feel.

The front seats offer ample space for adjustment for even the tall guys and the roof is placed at an adequate position that it does not bite into the eye-line and makes way for a great view of the road. The steering wheel is multifunction capable with auxiliary controls for the infotainment and cruise control settings on it as standard. Thanks to the tilt and telescopic adjustment capability, you'll be able to find that sweet spot between practicality and comfort very easily.

While the front seats get most of the controls, the rear seats get the majority of the comfort. Even at full capacity, you will not be pushed for space. The tall guys might find it a little tight, but that is about it, little. Overall, the 2021 Compass comes with feature-rich interiors that have a little something for everyone and anyone and can keep everyone immersed in its magnanimous build.

Exterior
6.9/10

There's no mistaking the 2021 Compass for anything but a Jeep—although we do think this is one of the prettier Jeep designs—and its ability to actually survive off-road is uncommon in this class. -CarAndDriver

When you look at the 2021 Jeep Compass, you can very well notice how well defined it is in terms of design by following the Jeep’s history. The signature seven-slot grille is the most distinctive yet the most cohesive feature of the entire design language. You get rugged and off-road touches to the exterior and an overall boxy dimensions. The LED headlights are wide and bright and the lines are sleek with rounded corners which gives it a much-needed macho stance that is reminiscent of being a Jeep.

The Limited and Trailhawk trims are where the magic is at as it unlocks the best features for the exteriors ranging from 4x4 drivetrain and the dual-tone paint job to the Bi-Xenon HID headlamps and the LED Taillamps. These trims also get the Roof Rails from Mopar. The biggest distinguishing feature is the wheel size. While the trims from Sport trim gets 16-inch wheels, the Latitude and Traihawk trim get 17-inch wheels. The Altitude and Limited trims offer bigger 18-inch wheels while the 80th Anniversary trim offers the biggest one of the lot at 19-inches.

As you move to the back, the Jeep Compass actually carves a rather dominating silhouette with a ground clearance of 8.5-inches, but it's one that is still agreeable and smart. Compared to the rest, the Compass is certainly the bulkiest and that shows when you try to push it to perform. But thankfully, it's quite compact which helps it in city commutes and keeping it stable. The Hyundai Tucson clearly has the weight advantage here and is also the lowest sitting of the others. The notable features of the 2021 Jeep Compass' exteriors are:

  • Fully galvanized steel body material
  • Bodyside cladding
  • Heated door mirrors
  • Bi-Xenon HID Headlamps With LED Signature

Safety
8.2/10

The 2021 Jeep Compass might be a carryover model from the previous year, but what it does not carry forward is the barebones safety suite from the previous year. Competition
7.0/10

2021 Jeep Compass Vs. 2021 Subaru Forester

The 2021 Subaru Forester has been around for a long time now to be called the veteran of the segment. With the full-time AWD and the boxer-4 powertrain, the ride packs the punch to go off-roads anytime and every time you wish. It's practical, utilitarian, and strikes the perfect balance in terms of the price it asks and features on the board with its performance and MPG numbers. In contrast, the 2021 Jeep Compass offers a more daunting road presence, modern yet rugged design, and comfortable interiors that make the case stronger for the Jeep.

2021 Jeep Compass Vs. 2021 Toyota RAV4

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 is the undefeated king of the segment as it is a blockbuster in all regards. It offers a great value for money proposition along with a globally acclaimed design that is loved by all. Its MPG figures are exemplary and so is its love for the outdoors and adventures. Add to that the reliability of being a Toyota, and the Jeep might start to feel weak at the knees. The 2021 Jeep Compass, despite its competitive price tag and magnanimous build, struggles to keep up with the momentum that the Toyota RAV4 sets forth.

2021 Jeep Compass Vs. 2021 Hyundai Tucson

The 2021 Hyundai Tucson is the safe, and tried and tested option here. It's something that has a little something for everyone and yet does not falter from the original ethos of the segment of being a feature-packed and cost-effective ride. It gets the best warranty in the lot and is also the sleekest looking option. While it does not impress in any aspect really, it offers a little of everything to maintain a jack of all trades approach. The aspect where the Jeep Compass takes the cake is in the customizability it can offer right from the base trim while the Tucson unlocks many features with the mid-tier and upper-tier trims.

Final Verdict

The 2021 Jeep Compass has bought a lot of improvements, starting from the engine to the infotainment and the biggest ones to the safety suite. The drivetrain is perfect for off-roading but still have a long way to go to achieve a fuel-efficient approach. The interiors are also comfortable and feature-rich as are expected from the Compass. So if you want a versatile and robust high riding off-roader, that can also support you in milk runs, then the 2021 Jeep Compass is the perfect value for money option that you should consider.
