Overall Rating
The 2022 BMW X1 will be a fresh new product from BMW and will share underpinnings with the 1 & 2 series. The current generation of the X1 was launched back in 2015 and is due to receive a new face. For the first time, we will also get an EV version of the X1 with the upcoming generation making this a crucial product for BMW’s EV endeavors. The 2022 BMW X1 is expected to hit the showroom floors sometime in the first half of 2022, with a starting price close to $36,500.
The 2022 BMW X1, a small luxury SUV is surprisingly fun to drive and practical at the same time. Carrying over unchanged, the X1's boxy design gives one of the roomiest interiors and cargo in its class. All X1 models come with a 228 hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed transmission. The BMW X1 is also easy to live with and offers great fuel economy ratings at around 29 MPG. The X1 currently makes up for 12% of BMW’s total sales which makes this compact SUV an important part of their line-up.
Pricing for the 2022 BMW X1 will range from $35,400 for the sDrive28i model. The all-wheel-drive xDrive28i model starts at $37,400. The 2022 X1 goes up against the Audi Q3, the Volvo XC40, and the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250. The 2022 BMW X1 shares UKL 2 Platform with the 2 Series. The X2 is a bit more stylish as well as sportier to drive, the X1 combines athleticism and practicality both.
The sDrive 28i makes a very compelling case due to the fact that both the trims get very similar features but there’s a nearly $2,000 increment for the AWD. The extra money makes more sense with opting for the additional features and options that come on the X1. The Premium package adds a lot of tasteful amenities inside to make the cabin visually appealing. Also, the M Sport package helps with the visual enhancement of this compact SUV.

All BMW X1 models come with the same 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with 8-speed automatic transmission. This engine cranks out a respectable 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The X1 offers a punchy acceleration and good fuel economy, even when equipped with all-wheel drive. The X1 xDrive28i with standard AWD accelerates to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds. A diesel engine is solely reserved for the European and Asian markets.
Power delivery and availability across the rpm range are controlled and ample as well. This punchy motor will come mated to the same ZF-8 speed automatic gearbox that is seen across the BMWs lineup. The X1 will be available in both FWD and AWD guise and despite the FWD platform, the X-Drive AWD version will be capable of delivering 100% of the power to its rear wheels if needed so it should be fun to drive and suitable for harsh winters.
The steering is responsive, and there's sufficient control offered from the wheels around turns. Minimal body roll in corners allows to carry more speed and open up an engaging driving experience. Even though the car will be based on an all-new platform, the same suspension and chassis setup should be seen on the 2022 model.

The Volvo is the most affordable car in this comparison, and it is also the slowest of the lot. The XC40's 187 hp engine gives it a 0-60 MPH time of 9 seconds, which is 2.4 seconds slower than the X1. The X1 and the GLA are similar cars, with a 0-60 MPH time of 6.8 seconds on that GLA that is 0.4 seconds slower than the X1. The Q3 takes a slow 7.4 seconds as well. Peak torque kicks in the earliest on the XC40, at a low 1400 RPM. All four cars have a similar top speed.
The 2022 BMW X1's fuel efficiency figures are excellent for this small luxury SUV class. EPA estimates the X1 sDrive28i's gas mileage at 24 MPG in the city, and 33 MPG on the highway. The AWD X1 drops the ratings by 1 MPG. The car will continue to offer a fuel capacity of 16.1 gallons that could give the X1 a range of 419 miles in the mixed driving conditions.

The X1 is one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs in the segment. The 2021 model also had one the largest fuel tank in the segment, which lends it an impressive range. However, the Mercedes-Benz GLA's mpg, as well as fuel tank capacity, are better than the X1. The Volvo XC40 offers a similar efficiency as the X1. The Q3 is the least efficient car.
The interior of the 2022 BMW X1 is admirable as compared to other subcompact SUVs but its mainstream rivals including the Audi and Mercedes are more luxurious inside. Since the X1 shares its platform with X2, the 2022 X1 boasts class-leading interior and cargo space in the class. That large cargo area is easy to access, thanks to the standard power liftgate. The interior on the X1 is more focused on functionality, and the arrangement of controls tells the same. At the same time, there's excellent attention to detail as well.
In terms of interior dimensions, The BMW X1 has a slightly better cabin room in comparison to its rivals. The X1 is a five-seater car. The front and rear seats are highly comfortable, with a lot of adjustabilities. The seats are adjustable for lateral support as well. The current BMW X1's interior did have certain materials that seem flimsy but overall, the next-gen X1 should offer a premium in-cabin experience.

The legroom and headroom on the X1 are quite spacious for a compact sedan. The GLA offers the most legroom in the front and the rear. The X1 on the other hand is taller and offers extra 1.8 inches of headroom on the front and 1-inch more in the rear over the GLA. The Q3 and the XC40 are spacious as well but are a tad bit behind the GLA. In terms of cargo capacity, the 27.1Â cu-ft cargo hold in the X1 is the largest on them, whereas the GLA offers the tiniest at 15.4 cu-ft.
The 2022 BMW X1 carries over a very similar dashboard layout and interior design as the 2-series. The X1's standard infotainment system features an 8.8-inch iDrive system that comes with in-dash navigation, Apple CarPlay capability (Android Auto is not offered), Bluetooth phone, and audio connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio, a USB port, and a seven-speaker audio system. The infotainment is intuitive and easy to operate. Audiophiles have an option to upgrade to a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system.
The control interface includes a rotary knob on the center console that's easy to access. The controller is surrounded by shortcut buttons for phone, nav, and other functions. The 2022 BMW X1 Will come with features such as:
The 2022 X1 boasts the BMW design language with prominent headlamps that flank the signature kidney grille. Though the spy shots of the new-generation X1 promised a fully redesigned model, however, it may grace the American market for the 2023 model. A camo cladded test mule was spotted recently doing rounds on public roads and by the looks of it, the upcoming SUV will be a smidge wider and longer than the dimensions of the outgoing model. The front bumper also features an air-take which might hint at the M Sport package exterior trim. The front end as a result now looks sharper than before.
The current design of the X1 looks boxy and the next-generation model is expected to be more aggressive and chunkier than before, with more aerodynamic styling given an emphasis. At the rear, it's mostly hidden but the taillights are now slimmer. Overall the BMW X1 takes a much different approach in comparison to say the Audi Q3's design or the Volvo XC40's design, both of which look cleaner and less boxy in comparison to the Bimmer. Dimensionally, the X1 weighs 3,543 lbs, with a length of 175 inches and a wheelbase of 105 inches.

The four cars are similar dimensionally. The Q3 is the heaviest of the lot, weighing around 360 lbs more than the X1. This eats into the Q3's performance. The GLA is the lightest car, at around 90 lbs less than the X1. In terms of length, the Q3 is the longest, whereas the XC40 has the most width. The GLA comes with the longest wheelbase of the lot at 107 inches, two more than that on the X1. The XC40 has a wheelbase of 106 inches. Some of the expected exterior features of the 2022 BMW X1 are:
The 2022 BMW X1 does come equipped with the basic safety features expected, and some driver-assistance features are offered as standard as well. Adaptive Cruise Control and parking assistant are offered as optional, and some more features will be added to the 2022 line-up. The X1 is based on the UKL2 Platform and uses aluminum and high-strength steel for better rigidity and strength with less weight. In terms of safety ratings, the 2021 model was rated with 5-stars overall from the NHTSA and a 'Good' rating in most tests from the IIHS, making this one of the safest cars in the segment. Some of the other safety features on the car are:
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA is mostly unchanged for 2022. This SUV offers the Mercedes brand value with excellent handling and powerful engines and is also available as the sportier AMG models. On the other hand, the 2022 BMW X1 gets a redesign for 2022, This compact SUV offers excellent driving dynamics, is priced lower than the Merc, and also comes with a better towing capacity. Between these two, we recommend the GLA courtesy of its spacious and comfortable interior, better power, and simple technology.
Both the Q3 and the X1 do right when it comes to exterior looks, safety ratings, engine performance, and interior comfort and quality. The 2022 Audi Q3 now is better equipped in terms of standard features, comes with standard AWD, and has better styling and simpler infotainment. The X1 on the other hand offers better performance runs, a better economy, and has better driving dynamics. Between the X1 and the Q3, we recommend the X1 for its balanced offering between performance, luxury, and safety.
