Overall Rating
The 2022 BMW X6 is the epitome of luxury fastback SUVs in the market priced at $68,345. The 2022 X6 is available for sale as a standalone trim apart from the more powerful X6 M50i with a 523 hp twin-turbo V8 under its hood. It now offers AWD as standard with a 335 hp mild-hybrid V6 and gets minor shuffling of standard features and options packages. The X6 is also well-equipped when it comes to safety, making this one of the safest SUVs in the segment.
Released in the summer of 2021, the 2022 BMW X6 carries over without any major changes this year. The biggest update is the sDrive 40i RWD model being discontinued from the lineup. Apart from that, there are 2 new color options while the list of standard features and options packages have been shuffled. The more powerful X6 M50i is also available for sale and also continues as it is, the review for which is done separately.
The BMW X6 is a luxury couple-like SUV based on the X5, and it more or less shares the interior treatment from the same. The MSRP for the 2022 BMW X6 now starts at $68,345 which is up by $2,300 due to the standardization of the xDrive AWD drivetrain.Â
The BMW X6 is a well-rounded package that goes against rivals such as the Audi Q8, Porsche Cayenne Coupe, and the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe.Â
We recommend the 2022 BMW X6 xDrive40i trim. At $67,350, the car comes with AWD, and packs in a gutsy performance with its turbocharged 3.0L I6-6 engine. It leaves no stones unturned in terms of a premium interior as well, with the leather upholstery, heated power-adjustable front sports seats, ambient lighting, and the panoramic sunroof. We also recommend the Luxury seating package, the Executive package, and the Driver Assistance Professional package as well.

"Less of a Showstopper is the xDrive40i which sufferes from jerky throttle response at low speeds." - Motortrend
The 2022 BMW X6 shall remain unchanged on the powertrain front and continue with the same setup as the currently outgoing model. It packs in a turbocharged 3.0L I-6 engine with a 48-volt hybrid system that outputs 335 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. The engine comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and comes with AWD as standard.
This engine is very refined and punchy and the gearbox shifts precisely without any lags. The way the power is delivered depends on the driving modes chosen- Sport, Comfort, and Eco Pro. This base X6 is a star performer, and goes from 0-60 mph in just 4.8 seconds, whereas the quarter-mile comes up in 13.5 seconds.
The 2022 BMW X6 handles sharp, and the chassis and the tires provide excellent feedback. The steering is well-weighted, which helps with quick direction changes and allows to carry more speed in the corners with minimum body roll. The X6 comes with an available factory-installed trailer hitch that can tow up to 7,200 lbs, which is an impressive figure for a car of this class.

The BMW X6, the Audi Q8, and the Panamera all output the same power figures, but peak power kicks in earlier on the Audi. In terms of performance, the X6 is the quickest of the lot, whereas the GLE 53 and the Q8 differ by around half a seconds. The Cayenne is the slowest of the lot but is very engaging to drive. Both the Q8 and X6 offer more value due to their lower asking price.
Since the 2022 BMW X6 does not get any changes on the powertrain front, it returns the same levels of fuel efficiency as the outgoing model. The 2022 BMW X6 returns a city/highway/combined MPG of 21/25/23. The car features a 22.4-gallon fuel tank that results in a highway range of over 550 miles. Average annual fuel costs for the X6 come around $2,200.

The 2022 X6 is the most efficient one here thanks to its mild-hybrid powertrain. Both the Porsche and Mercedes gulp a lot more fuel and a similarly-sized gas tank makes their range subpar when compared to the X6. The Q8 also employs a mild-hybrid setup but only manages marginally better than the Cayenne and GLE 53.
"Even in its least expensive guise, the X6 offers an interior fitted soft-touch materials that feel expensive and carry a nice weighting to them." KBB
The interior of the 2022 BMW X6 is not very different from that of the BMW X5. It's in line with the newer theme of interiors seen on most 2022 BMW cars and is undoubtedly clean and luxurious. Premium materials adorn the cabin all around, with soft-touch plastics adding a sense of luxury. There are sticking inserts everywhere: the dash, the steering, the central console, and even on the doors. Knobs and buttons feel robust and are smartly laid out.
The optional glass control buttons and the glass shifter have a unique appeal to them. This five-seater car comes with leather seats as standard. The power-adjustable heated front seats are excellent in terms of comfort and support, and there's excellent legroom and headroom on offer. In the rear, seat comfort is as good as the front row, but available headroom and legroom are limited. Some features such as the ambient lighting and the four-zone climate control amp up the interior.

The X6 offers a cargo space of 27 cu-ft, which is less than the X5. Against the rivals, the X6 is just a tad bit larger than the Audi and the Mercedes in the front row, whereas in the rear the Q8 offers the most seating space. The X6's headroom is the most in the rear. In terms of cargo space, the GLE has the most cargo capacity at 33.5 cu-ft, whereas Cayenne's 22 cu-ft capacity is the least.Â
With the BMW iDrive 7 infotainment system, you get two large 12.3-inch touchscreens along with the Rotary Knob in the center console. The infotainment system also supports voice recognition. Gesture control is an optional upgrade as well. The dual displays look great with crisp contrast graphics. They are responsive and user-friendly as well. The instrument panel is crisp, and the control buttons are well-laid out. Some interior features on the X6 are:
"Distinctive, but definitely not for everyone, the BMW X6 certainly makes a strong statement." The Car Connection
As a carryover model, we expect the 2022 BMW X6 to continue with the same design as the current 2021 model. The rear end of the X6 is the one element that differentiates it from other SUVs and gives it more of a coupe-look. BMW calls the X6 a sports activity coupe. The front of the X6 features a long hood with a really large kidney grille with huge air intakes fashioned with slim and mean-looking LED headlamps. Along the side, the sloping roofline and the huge wheels lend the X6 a sporty stance.
Available wheel size ranges from 20-inch to 22-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, the raked D-pillar is neatly finished with slim LED taillights and wide chrome-lined exhaust outlets integrated neatly into a thick rear bumper. The X6 also comes with the M sport package that adds a unique exterior trim, with the adaptive M suspension and the M Sport Exhaust system. Dimensionally, the X6 is 195 inches long, with a weight of 4,713 lbs, and a wheelbase of 117.1 inches.

The new 2022 X6 is slightly lower than before for improved aerodynamics and a reduced center of gravity. Compared to its rivals, the BMW X6 has a slightly lower curb weight than its rivals except for the Cayenne while the Porsche Cayenne Coupe is almost similar in length and width department to the X6.
That said, on the streets, the Porsche Cayenne coupe looks the most appealing along with the Q8, while the X6 and GLE 53 are the ones that look less enticing.
The 2022 BMW X6 hasn’t gone through the NHTSA or the IIHS safety tests, but it is based on the BMW X5. The X5 has received IIHS Top Safety Pick + designation. The BMW X6 shares its platform with the X5, the CLAR platform, which is a modular platform that uses aluminum or steel as the base materials. The X6 is well-equipped in terms of safety features offered, and there are even additional safety features through packages. Some of the noteworthy safety features on the BMW X6 are:
Both the SUVs are priced very similarly to each other and although the Q8 has a higher torque output, the X6 is much faster off the mark. Audi is more comfortable with the road undulations and offers higher towing capabilities. The X6 on the other hand is more frugal and has a higher stance. The Q8 is more spacious for both the passengers and their luggage while also offering more standard features, making it the preferred choice here.
The Porsche Cayenne is more fun to drive but is around a second slower in the 0-60 run as compared to the X6. It loses out in terms of fuel efficiency and also the cabin space. While Porsche offers far more customization and personalization options, the X6 has more standard features. The Cayenne is also more expensive and despite the attractive looks, it does not feel worth investing the $10,000-15,000 over the BMW.
The AMG GLE 53 Coupe is well over $10,000 more expensive than the X6 and yet is marginally slower in the straight line. Mercedes is more comfortable but BMW is the better handler of the two. X6 is far more frugal but the GLE 53 is more spacious and also has more standard features. Therefore, the 2022 X6 is the preferred one between the two.
The 2022 BMW X6 is among the most desired fastback style coupe luxury SUVs that are in the market today. It has a powerful engine, excellent driving dynamics, and a decent fuel economy as well. The X6 is a very stylish and futuristic alternative to the X5, but it is also slightly less practical. The interior space is tight in terms of rear legroom and headroom, and the cargo capacity is less as well. At $67,350, the X6 has a conservative approach that aims at capturing the heart more than the mind, and it does so very efficiently.
