The 2019 model year marks the final running year of the Ford Flex. With the current generation introduced back in 2013, Ford has had a long time fixing all issues with this midsize wagon. From hitting 6 recalls and nearly 500 complaints to just 1 recall and 11 complaints for the 2019 model year, this wagon has showcased the best-built quality and reliability in its segment in recent times. Since Ford is soon to retire this wagon from the existing line-up, is it a good deal in 2019? Well, let’s find out.

With a reliability rating of 78/100, the Ford Flex falls considerably behind popular midsize SUVs like the Honda Pilot, the Chevrolet Traverse, and the Toyota Highlander. The Youtube channel "car PROblems" lists out all the problems and issues faced by the 2019 Flex owners. Check out the video below and read ahead to find out if the Flex is the one worth investing in as a family wagon considering that Ford has managed to bring down its recalls and complaints considerably over the years.

2019 Ford Flex User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical Complaints

  • Engine- Premature water pump failure/ leak is one major engine issue raised by many owners. This has been a common issue with Ford’s 3.5L V6 engine. This issue is said to affect both long and low run engines equally. Vehicles under warranty do receive replacements free of charge from the dealer.

Electric System complaints

  • Back up camera- The backup camera goes blank intermittently. Even though this has been reported as a common issue by owners, Ford is yet to include it in a recall. Some Ford models with similar issues caused by worn-out wiring harness inside the trunk have already received a recall to fix this issue.

Structural Complaints

  • Liftgate- The power liftgate function fails with low mileage causing it to intermittently close or open when in access. The trunk door also does not unlock or open when the button is pressed. Also, the rear trunk open warning stays illuminated on the dashboard despite it being closed.
  • Doors- Similar to the litigate, the door ajar warning light remains illuminated even after the doors have been closed. This issue is pretty common on the Ford Flex and premature failure of door lock sensors is traced to be the cause.
  • Tie rods- The steering tie rods on the Ford Flex are said to fail without warning causing the vehicle to wobble vigorously or swerve out of control when driving. The user got it changed at the dealer but no further action has been taken on this issue which raised safety concerns.

Safety Complaints

  • Airbags- The airbags on the 2019 Ford Flex, as complained by an owner, have failed to deploy in the event of a crash. Though the automaker was made aware of this issue, no statements have been released from their side. One crash with three recorded injuries has been registered against this issue by the NHTSA.

The alternator and starter cable may be loose.

The power supply cables at the starter and the alternator may not have been properly secured, possibly resulting in an electrical arc, increasing the risk of a fire.

The dealers will inspect the alternator and starter motor power supply cables to verify that they are properly secured, correcting them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on September 26, 2018

Should you buy a used Ford Flex?

The Ford Flex has been in the game long enough that the number of complaints and recalls on its name has fallen drastically. You could call the low sales number one reason, but the vehicle still has a great “quality and reliability” ratings in its latest iteration as per JD Power, further supporting the statement. If you are someone who likes the quirky looks and features of this wagon, you could always pick one up if you see one put up on sale for a good deal. But, given that Ford already is planning to chop it off from the line-up soon, it would be hard for us to recommend buying one. We have nothing against this wagon here, but the questionable support and spare availability in the future are reasons that are keeping us away from suggesting one.
