Overview

Manual gearboxes in the US market are a rare sight nowadays. There are very few options when it comes to sport sedans under $30,000, and the 2022 Honda Civic Si is one of them. First came into light almost four decades ago, the Civic Si sits between the regular Civic and the sportier Civic Type-R. The 2022 Honda Civic Si is sold as a separate car with a price tag of $27,300. There is another variant Civic Si HPT which swaps out all-weather tires with high performance tires for an added cost.

Buying Advice

2022 Civic Si is a standalone car. We recommend you to get the high-performance tires for better grip along with an all-season protection package I. If you want to make the car look sportier, you can also opt for the HPD package.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

After a brief hiatus for 2021 MY, the Civic Si got a generation upgrade for 2022 MY. The 2022 Civic Si is a part of the 11th gen Civic with new features, increased dimensions and better performance; it also comes with a redesigned exterior and interior styling to look more promising. On the performance front, it now comes with a new rev-match control and a retuned powertrain. 2022 Civic Si goes up against the likes of the Kia Forte GT, Volkswagen Jetta GLI, and Hyundai Elantra N Line.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

As mentioned above, the 2022 Honda Civic Si comes in two different variants- Civic Si and Civic Si HPT. After a brief hiatus, the 2022 Civic Si gets a retuned powertrain where peak torque is achieved at much lower revs. The NVH levels have been improved too. However, as a compromise the power drops by 5hp. It now also comes with a rev-match control system previously only available on the Civic Type-R. For track ready days, you can also get the optional high-performance tires variant at an additional cost of $200.

Price

2022 Honda Civic Si is sold in two variants- Civic Si and Civic Si HPT. The base variant costs $27,300 and comes standard with All-weather tires. This is an almost $2000 price increase over the previous model. The Civic Si HPT costs an additional $200 and replaces the standard tires with High Performance Tires for those who prefer a track ready vehicle. Moreover, Honda provides four additional packages and several cosmetic parts for exterior styling.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

After skipping the 2021 MY, the 2022 Honda Civic Si comes equipped with the same mechanicals as that of the 2020 MY under the hood but with a slight twist. The standard 1.5L Turbo inline-4 engine now makes 200 hp and 192 lb-ft torque; That’s 5 hp less than what the 2020 MY had on offer. However, the powertrain feels much more refined and revs much eagerly. Peak torque is now achieved at much lower revs (300rpm lower to be exact). The redline tip has been pushed up 100 rpm. The engine is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox that sends power to the front wheels via the Helical limited-slip differential system. The improved manual gearbox comes with 10% shorter throws and that helps with quicker gear shifts. Moreover, the new Civic Si also comes with a rev-match control system previously available only in the Civic Type-R. You can also switch it off from the control panel.

Honda has made some important changes to significantly improve the driving dynamics and handling characteristics. They also swapped the adaptive suspension for the standard ones. While they feel a bit harsh, they provide excellent stability while taking on sharp turns. The Dual-Pinion, Variable-Ratio Electric Power Steering (EPS) feels heavier and the turning radius is shorter at 38.1 feet. The weight is distributed at 60.3% (front) to 39.7% (rear); this reduces oversteer. Coming to the acceleration part, the car hit the 60 mph mark in 6.8 seconds and reached a quarter-mile in 15.1 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds slower than the 2020 MY. And regarding brakes, the front wheels come equipped with 12.3-inch ventilated disc brakes, while the rear comes equipped with 11.1-inch solid disc brakes. The brakes have a heavy bite and bring the car to a stop from 60 mph within 122 feet.

2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI is the most expensive sedan in the comparison. As opposed to what rivals have on offer, Jetta GLI comes standard with a larger 2L Turbo mill. 2022 Honda Civic Si comes with a much smaller engine than that of the Kia and Hyundai but still its performance matches that of the latter. In fact, it has better acceleration figures than the Korean counterparts. However, when you take the price to power ratio into consideration, the Korean cousins offer much better value. Moreover, all the sedans except the Civic Si come with an optional automatic gearbox.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

2022 Civic Si provides an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 27 MPG in the city and 37 MPG on the highway. The fuel economy has been raised by 1 MPG compared to the 2020 MY, thanks to the retuned engine. While the vehicle can run on Regular Unleaded gasoline, the company recommends Premium gas for better performance in the long run. As standard, it comes equipped with a 12.4-gallon fuel tank which puts its driving range well over 450 miles on the highway.

The 2022 Civic Si not only provides a decent amount of power and performance but also manages to stay ahead of all its rivals in terms of fuel economy. However, its small fuel tank affects its driving range. The Korean counterparts have to work onto the fuel economy part to keep up with the competition.

Interior
7.0/10

Compared to the previous model year, the Civic Si features a clean, distinct, and modern interior thanks to the extensive redesign. The dashboard layout, ergonomics, quality of materials and seating space have been significantly improved. The interior looks minimalistic and to match the sporty vibes you get red accents. The upper part of the dashboard is covered in soft leatherette surfaces. You can also find a unique honeycomb patterned metal dash strip for aesthetic appeal. You also get a standard leather wrapped multi-function steering and an aluminum gear knob wrapped in leather as well.

The vehicle’s dimensions have been increased and that significantly increased the seating space. As standard, it comes with racing inspired Si sport seats and they come wrapped in good quality red and black cloth upholstery. The front seats are new for 2022 MY and focus on better comfort and driving position. The seats come with an adequate amount of padding for better support and comfort. However, you don't have power-adjustable seats even as an option. Honda has also removed heated seats from the options list which was available for 2020 MY. Coming to the rear, you get 60/40 split fold down seat backs along with a center armrest.

Coming to the infotainment part, you get a new larger 9-inch touch screen display docked in the center of the dashboard. And a 7-inch fully digital instrument cluster adds a bit of modern twist. The infotainment display quality is great and the touch screen is responsive. Besides that, you also get plenty of physical buttons and knobs to control the infotainment and climate control unit. They are properly labeled and are easy to use. As standard, the infotainment system comes with a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system, wireless Android Auto, wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM, HD Radio, Bluetooth, RDS, and two USB ports.

Coming to the cargo trunk, you get about 14.4 cu. ft. cargo space that can be used to store four-to-five medium-sized bags easily. However, the rear seats can be folded for additional space. Besides that, you also get a few cubby storage spaces inside the cabin which include beverage holders, door-pocket storage bins both at the front and rear and a passenger-side seat back pocket as well.

All the sedans in competition come with a standard seating capacity for five people, but when it comes interior space, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra N-Line takes the win. It offers a more balanced cabin with better legroom at the rear. On the other hand, the Civic Si sits a bit wider and that translates to better shoulder room in both rows. However, the low roof affected its headroom by a significant margin. Speaking of aesthetics and appeal, it is hard to choose a winner. However, the Civic Si new redesigned interior looks more distinct and sporty. The new racing inspired Si sport seats are also one of the most comfortable in the segment.

Key Interior Features:

  • Black cloth upholstery with red stitching
  • Racing inspired Si sport front seats
  • Driver's seat with manual height adjustment
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Aluminum shift knob with leather
  • One-touch power moonroof
  • 9-inch touchscreen display

Exterior
8.0/10

2022 Honda Civic Si comes with a redesigned exterior thanks to the arrival of the 11th generation. It now looks more premium compared to the sharp and sporty design of the previous models. At the front, you can find a pair of sleek and wide LED headlights with DRLs slotted on either side of the new honeycomb grille. You can also find a redesigned bumper that makes the car look meaner and sportier than before. Moreover, the hood has been made lower and the A-pillars moved back by a couple of inches. This means that the windshield is also moved back to provide better panoramic visibility. Moreover, both the A and C-pillars have been made thinner to reduce blind spots.

Coming to the rear, the rear bumper has also been swapped for a more aggressive one. It is now shorter and this means that twin oval tailpipes and diffuser get to show off. You can also find a black spoiler for sporty appeal. Moreover, the vehicle comes standard with 18-inch matte black twin-spoke alloy wheels, body-color door handles, and a pair of gloss black, heated side mirrors. For 2022 MY, blazing orange has also been added to the color palette.

Despite significant upgrades, the 2022 Civic Si put on only 21 pounds more and still it is the lightest car in the lot. Moreover, the new dimensions translated into much better interior space. However, the low ride height affected the headroom. VW Jetta GLI is the heaviest car in the lot as it features a much larger engine and plenty of sound insulation materials. The Korean cousins on the other hand are comparatively heavier than the Honda and provide much better space inside thanks to their large dimensions. Styling wise, the new Elantra N-Line looks sharp and sleek.

Key Exterior Features:

  • 18” matte dark alloy wheels
  • LED headlights with Auto-on/off
  • Security system with remote entry and trunk release
  • Heated, gloss black power side mirrors
  • One-touch power moonroof
  • Smart entry with walk away auto lock
  • Dual chrome exhaust
  • Gloss black decklid spoiler

Safety
9.0/10

The 2022 Honda Civic Si is built upon Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure which is known for its impeccable safety. It also comes standard with Honda Sensing suite, which includes several important driver assistance tech like collision mitigation braking system, road departure mitigation system, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and departure warning, forward collision warning, blindspot monitor, and many other features.

Speaking of safety, NHTSA has given the 2022 Civic Si 5 stars for overall safety. The front passenger side received only 4 stars. However, it passed the rollover test with 5 stars with a rollover risk of 9.5%. IIHS rated the regular Civic "Good" on all fronts and also awarded it with the "Top Safety Pick+" title.

Highlight Safety Features:

  • Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure
  • Collision mitigation braking system
  • Road departure mitigation system
  • Forward collision warning
  • Blind Spot Monitor w/ rear cross-traffic alert
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane-keeping assistance system
  • Lane departure warning
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Multi-angle rearview camera with dynamic guidelines

Competition
8.0/10

2022 Honda Civic Si vs. 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

The Volkswagen Jetta GLI is the most expensive sedan in the competition, and there are several reasons for this. It comes with a much larger and more powerful engine and offers an optional automatic gearbox. Apart from these, it comes with some upmarket features like LED ambient lighting, heated and ventilated front seats, a 6-way power-adjustable driver seat, leather upholstery, and many more. Between the two, Jetta GLI seems more appealing considering the negligible difference in the price tag.

2022 Honda Civic Si vs. 2022 Kia Forte GT

2022 Kia Forte GT costs almost $3000 less than the latter, but it packs an impressive set of features. However, performance and fuel economy are slightly lower than that of the Civic Si. But in terms of features, it has beaten the Honda significantly. It comes standard with SynTex leatherette-trimmed seats, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic AC, and more. Moreover, it offers slightly better cargo space. But in terms of handling characteristics and driving experience, we would choose the Honda.

2022 Honda Civic Si vs. 2022 Hyundai Elantra N Line

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra N Line is the most affordable sedan in the segment. It looks sharp and sleek, much more sportier than the Civic. However, on the performance front, Civic Si has better figures. Coming to the interior, it comes with a better set of standard features and plenty of room. Moreover, it comes with plenty of options for customization and an optional DCT gearbox. We think that the Elantra N-Line offers a better value proposition but the tried and tested Civic Si still has a better hold over the Hyundai.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

For 2022 MY, Honda has overhauled its Civic Si from the ground up thanks to the 11th gen upgrade. It arrived with some crucial changes- redesigned exterior and interior, stiffer suspension system, improved driving dynamics, retuned engine, and better set of features. The new racing inspired Si sport seats offer plenty of support and comfort. Moreover, fuel economy has been improved as well. On the flip side, the interior is minimalistic and misses out on some creature comforts that are standard in its rivals. Nevertheless, the 2022 Civic Si is an excellent choice in the sports sedan segment.
