Overview

Didn't you wish that you could get more for less? If yes, then this time an entry-level sedan is about to get shockingly surprising. We present to you the 2017 Hyundai Accent which has got a lot and more than you might expect from a subcompact sedan. The first iteration of the Accent dropped in 1994 as the Hyundai Excel and since then the line-up has been a consistent performer in the Hyundai line-up.

It stands tall with its back straight in front of its competition the Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, and Kia Rio. All of these cars are entry-level affordable subcompact sedan cars but the Hyundai Accent truly shines in front of them. Therefore, let's find out how it really stands out in its segment.

Buying Advice

You can select any one of the two variants that are being offered. Since all the key features and everything is the same, the choice of the ride be it automatic or manual totally depends on your preference. Although, we would still recommend the manual variant as it is priced less, has more mileage, and is way punchier.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The new 2017 Hyundai Accent is the fifth iteration in its series. It is powered by a 1.6L inline-4 engine producing 137hp and 123lb-ft torque via a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. The entry-level affordable subcompact sedan has good ride quality and fuel economy to go with the punchy engine

Pricing and Features

Engine and Performance
5.6/10

The Hyundai Accent gets you enough power on the table to make you ride comfortably on the highways. With this overtaking slow moving traffic becomes easy. The car generates a power of about 137 hp which is sufficient to handle almost everything you throw at it. The 6-speed manual transmission is smooth and sleek, allowing you to have an engaging driving experience.

Although the automatic variant also comes with a 6-speed transmission the overall driving characteristics seem boring. Like all automatic variants this is just the same which means it's an easy ride but looking from the perspective of a driver it kind of lacks.

Acceleration

The 2017 Accent sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 8.6 seconds, which is not bad at all for an entry-level sedan. The only car which is better than it in this segment is the Kia Rio. Although, you need to know the competition is only 0.2 seconds better so it won't make a huge difference unless you decide to race with it.

It's not disappointing or just average, the figures noted on the car are pretty impressive. Its competitor the Chevrolet Sonic has a better engine but lacks behind a lot in terms of acceleration. The car can take you a quarter-mile in just 16.7 seconds considering this we would say that you won't be late for your office the next time at least.

Riding and Handling

This is the most important part as it really decides the overall ride quality of the vehicle. The car was made for the buyers with a strict budget and its purpose is not to churn power but serve as a great utility, and it does the same without any questions asked. Therefore, if you're someone who has a heavy right foot then it gives you the confidence of doing so.

The car is quite easy on the corners and stays really stable unless you decide to take it above its capability. There can be some complaints about the steering of the car. For some drivers, it might feel a little too light but the best part is that it is pretty responsive. The suspension is set on the softer side and provides a smooth ride however, it can get a bit unsettling over uneven surfaces.

Braking

The front brakes of the Hyundai Accent are ventilated discs while at the rear the car uses a drum setup. The braking on this car is pretty efficient, unlike the cars that have been generally seen in this segment. Also, it performs better than its rivals the Chevrolet Sonic and Kia Rio but falls short in front of the Ford Fiesta. In the end, you could say that the brakes are dependable considering their class.

Fuel Economy

If you think that the Hyundai Accent is underpowered because of its mileage capabilities against the competition, then you are wrong. In spite, the sedan shines in all the conditions be it within the city, out on the highway, or combined fuel economy rating.

The Hyundai Accent gives you a mileage of 27 in the city while Ford Fiesta and Kia Rio share the same figures. Although, in terms of highway efficiency, it tops everyone and manages to impress its buyers quite much. Talking about the overall mileage of the car then the figures delivered by it are pretty impressive as you can see in the spec sheets below.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2017 Hyundai Accent Sedan has a passenger capacity of 5 people at a time. The front 2 are pretty spacious like most cars but it's the back that impresses. The car may be an inch smaller than its competitors but the rear cabin is spacious enough for a tall guy.

The seats are comfortable although the material inside the cabins feels cheap. Although, the good thing about the interior is that it may not be of that premium quality still it has been put together great. The seating in this car won't disappoint you as it serves its purpose well. The car overall is very comfortable and won't make you uneasy at the back especially as early as other cars might.

Infotainment System

The standard infotainment system of the 2017 Hyundai Accent Sedan has all the basic features that you might expect. Although, the optional infotainment is very easy to use.

2017 Hyundai Accent Sedan Infotainment System

Below are all the standard features as well as optional features:

Standard:

  • Aux Input
  • Bluetooth Audio
  • Bluetooth Phone
  • USB

Optional:

  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Voice Recognition

Also, one thing to note is that the optional variants of the infotainment system come with a larger display. The infotainment system is also very responsive. Therefore, you are covered from all sides in the case of the infotainment system.

Cargo Capacity

Hyundai Accent has a capacity of 13.7 cubic feet which gives it surprisingly spacious storage space. It is really good if you have a small amount of cargo. Although, in case if you have extra luggage then you can fold the rear seats for more storage.

Also, it is shaped so adequately that everything that you would like to fit, fits well. It may not be that huge but still, in comparison, it is great.

Exterior
5.6/10

The car is the lightest among its competitors but has the best wheelbase in the category. Lighter cars are generally less stable in comparison although a better wheelbase gives you better grip and easy maneuverability. The car also doesn't fail to impress you in this segment at least around the corners.

The sedan comes with Hyundai’s new fluidic design language and it makes the sedan look quite appealing for its price. When compared to its rivals, the Accent looks the most stylish one while the Ford Fiesta features a rather boring design.

Safety
4.4/10

The Hyundai Accent comes with 6 airbags as standard, covering you from all sides in case of a collision. It also has a load of other safety features such as ABS along with EBD, Brake Assist, and much more. The company has also kept the safety of your child at priority. The car has a set of 3 tethers and 2 latches at the rear seat.

Although, if you're thinking that where is Forward collision warning and Front Automated Emergency brakes then you need to purchase them. Both the features in the car are coming as optional but it's good that the company has at least kept them as optional.

  • 6-airbag safety: Front, side, and head curtain airbags with Occupant Classification System
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Vehicle Stability Management
  • Traction Control System
  • Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Brake Assist
  • Active front head restraints and adjustable head restraints for all seating positions
  • Front seatbelt pretensioners

Competition
9.0/10

Hyundai Accent vs Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta is its weakest competitor in the segment. Although, talking about the price of it is coming for $13,660. The car has a 1.6L Ti-VCT I-4 engine which gives a power of about 120 hp which is lower than the Accent. Also, it has a 5-speed manual transmission with front-wheel drive like every car in its segment.

2017 Ford Fiesta

You can compare the car by any means if we are talking about Hyundai Accent then this obviously loses the competition. Although, if considering the price then yes it is almost $1000 less than the Hyundai Accent.

Hyundai Accent vs Chevrolet Sonic

The Chevrolet Sonic is coming at $15,145. The 2017 Sedan variant of the car has gone through certain cosmetic changes in the front. Talking about the engine, it has an ECOTEC 1.8L Variable Valve Timing DOHC 4-cylinder engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. The car though powered with a better engine still manages to get 127 hp which is lower than the Hyundai Accent.

2017 Chevrolet Sonic

The car is spacious from the inside though but then again the cargo space and the rear seating on the Hyundai Accent are better. The interior comes in two colors in jet black and titanium silver. Also, it has got crank windows which are pretty rare these days. The seats are nice and you can adjust the seats as per your choice. Overall, it is a decent car but offers nothing more in comparison and also being sold is a bit expensive in comparison. Although, if bigger cargo space is your priority then go ahead.

Hyundai Accent vs Kia Rio

This is the closest competitor to the Hyundai Accent. The car features better acceleration, better quarter-mile performance while having the same 1.6L engine. It also comes with a 6-speed manual transmission.

2017 Kia Rio

The infotainment is also responsive just like the Hyundai Accent. The best part is that the car is pretty responsive to lows. Also, the cabin is pretty quiet just like that of the Hyundai Accent. Although it is a little weak on the highways similar to the Accent wins. If you're thinking of any other car in this segment then this would be your closest choice other than Hyundai Accent.

Final Verdict

If you're looking for something in the subcompact segment then it is the car to go for. The car shares immense driveability both for the highways as well as city rides. If you talk about the responsiveness of the engine, you would get what you expected, nothing too less or more. The exteriors are pretty sharp and the car looks great from the outside. The interiors are also good with a spacious cabin, especially for the rear. The best part of the interior is that you can fit as I mentioned before a tall guy easily without giving him cramps. The car in its sum is a nice balance between performance and stability. Overall, speaking it has its pros and certain limitations but then considering the price we would recommend this car to you.

              This is my car

Pros - ["Good mileage", "Serious xm radio", "Control over headlights"]

Cons - ["Too compact", "Not a hatchback", "Don't care for the color"]

My car was not picked by myself. I don't care for the low front bumper. If I won the lottery I would pay this car off and trade it in for another. I wish it had more features. Such as a back up camera and a hatchback.

Hyundai Accent: Reliable, Affordable, and An Easy Ride.

Pros - ["The car is great on gas and I have gotten up to 43 miles mpg. Your average mile range after filling up is between 350-400.", "The car drives smooth and handles well. Even though it is a compact sedan, the car withstands weather conditions, road conditions, and other drivers as well."]

Cons - ["The car can go through oil more than other sedans similar in size and makeup.", "The car's seats are not accommodating for people over 6 foot tall. It is a compact sedan and that has to be considered if you are 6 foot and up."]

My Hyundai Accent has proved to be reliable, affordable, and an overall easy ride in more than a few ways. From buying my Accent with 14k miles on it and currently having 78k on it, it has had no major issues. Other than regular maintenance (brakes, rotors, tires, oil changes), I've had a recall fixed. Another way the Accent screams reliability is the miles per gallon. At it's best, I've gotten m...

              Great reliable car

Pros - ["Doesn't break down", "Great gas milage and turning ratio", "Good acceleration"]

Cons - ["Plastic parts", "No spare tire", "No cruise control"]

My kids have crashed this car several times and it still runs great. It's got 150,000 miles and still going strong. I plan to buy a similar model when this one dies. Great cat which I never would have guessed when I bought it.
